Haunted Houses, Parks, Ships, Even a Haunted Bank

Haunted Houses, Parks, Ships, Even a Haunted Bank

My high school drama club participated in our local haunted house, and we were merciless. One woman had to be taken away in an ambulance after an actor concealed in a hole in the ground grabbed her foot. So these things really freak me out. I don't believe in zombies and monsters, but I do believe in unpredictable aspiring actors. THE BIG ONES: Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights looked so intense I turned down an... more ›

Malibu v 2.0

Malibu v 2.0

A couple of months ago, I wrote a post celebrating the return of American Gladiators reruns to ESPN Classic. Now, word is that NBC is going one step further, reviving the athletic game show for sometime next season. The Variety article states that: The competition skein -- which featured players with names like Nitro, Turbo and Laser in its campy, early '90s syndie incarnation -- will be updated for the 21st century with new technology... more ›

TV's Bad Boy Chef Comes to Vroman's

Anthony Bourdain, the bad boy of the culinary world, is known for eating anything. He's in town on Sunday at Vroman's in Pasadena reading from his new book, The Nasty Bits. Bourdain, the executive chef of Les Halles in NYC and current host of the Travel's Channel's No Reservations, has eaten stuff straight outta Fear Factor: blowfish, roasted sheep's testicle and the still-beating heart of a cobra. more ›

Chinese Food Fest This Weekend

Chinese Food Fest This Weekend

This weekend, the Chinatown Business Improvement District is putting on a two-day Chinese Food Festival, aimed at getting folks out and about and eating in LA's historic Chinatown. Food and fun are on the menu, with attendees having the opportunity to sample tasty dishes from local restaurants, see Taiwan’s spectacular Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppet Theatre, catch continuous showings of two of our favorite Chinese films, Eat Drink Man Woman and The Wedding Banquet, meet faculty and interns from the Yo San University School of Traditional Chinese Medicine who will offer free acupuncture demonstrations, tongue reading, and pulse analysis, and see some teapot-juggling, tai chi, martial arts, plate-spinning, bowl-kicking, and contortionists. There are tons of games and activities, including a kids' "Chinese Fear Factor." And...tons of food to eat. You can even taste some of Fosselman's Chinese-inspired flavors (and, hey--they're our #2 pick in the Ice Cream Summer series!) more ›
