What's Up? Airfare On Four Major U.S. Airlines, Ouch!
Plan on traveling by plane within the U.S. soon? Then you'll need to plan on paying more per ticket on at least four major airlines, who implemented a ticket price increase Tuesday. There Won't Be a $15.50 Flat Rate Minimum To Cab it From BUR After All
It turns out Burbank can't quite force a $15.50 minimum rate on cab fares originating from Bob Hope Airport as initially proposed and passed. That base fare isn't going to happen after all.
FINALLY: Metro Will Offer Rolling Monthly and Weekly Passes
At long last, Metro is setting up their extended use passes with some semblance of common sense. Thanks to a Board vote yesterday, during which a Day Pass rate rollback was also approved, starting in August, Metro will have rolling 7- and 30-day passes that will be sold every day.
All Aboard! Metro Approves Day Pass Price Rollback to $5
As previously proposed, today the Metro Board approved a temporary decrease in the price of a Day Pass from $6 to $5. The new fare will be available starting August 1st, and is part of a 1-year test to see if cutting the cost will boost ridership on the transit system.
Rolling Back: Metro Considering Temporary $5 Pricing for Day Passes
If the high price of filling up your tank is keeping you from going places in your car, Metro's CEO, Art Leahy, has a proposal for you. The transit agency is considering knocking a buck off the price of their Day Pass, bringing the price for a full day's worth of rides to $5. The decrease would go into effect July 1, and last six months, according to The Source.
1¢ Rides on Angels Flight Mark Railway's 109th Anniversary
In 2011, it might cost more than a quarter to hitch a ride on Angels Flight up--or down--Bunker Hill. But tomorrow, you can save 24 cents a ride thanks to a fun fare on the funicular to celebrate its 109th anniversary.

Metro Likely to Increase Fares Effective July 1
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is likely to implement a fare hike effective July 1, according to the LA Times. Facing a $204-million hole in their operating budget, MTA believes the added revenue will help, and estimates it will lower the deficit to $180 million.
Metrolink Board Meets Today to Discuss Ousting Chief, Service Cuts
Metrolink's board is scheduled to hold meetings today during which they will discuss the removal of Chief Executive David Solow, as well as service reductions, according to LA Now. Solow has been the focus of much scrutiny and criticism since the deadly September 2008 Chatsworth crash.
Transit Coalition to Metrolink: 'Fare Increases, Not Service Cuts, Are the Least Painful'
A transit lobbying group today released their formal position on budget-saving Metrolink proposals to either raise fares or jettison more than 50 trains from its schedule, which included canceling Orange County Weekend Service and a variety of other trains. Bart Reed, the Executive Director of The Transit Coalition, said fare increases would better serve ridership.
Metrolink Mulls Raising Fares in January
Commuter rail service Metrolink is considering a fare increase to be implemented at the start of the new year, reports the Daily News. "The five-county Metrolink agency board is scheduled to meet Friday to decide whether to hike ticket prices for tens of thousands of daily passengers by as much as 6 percent."
Metro Fare Gates to be Tested Along Red/Purple Line
Although the installation of new gates along Metro rail lines has been partially suspended, a pilot program of sorts will be going in at Union Station and a number of others soon. "It was decided last week to do a pilot test of the gating system at four stations," Metro told Damien Newton at LA Streetsblog in an e-mail. "So gates will be installed at Union Station, Wilshire/Normadie, Westlake and Pershing Square stations on the Red/Purple lines. This will give staff an opportunity to test the gates and see how they are working. During the testing period, the gates will be 'free-spinning.'"
First Subway Fare Gates Coming this Week
By the end of this week, we should see gates in the Metro Purple Line Wilshire/Normandie station, reports LA Streetsblog: "Once the Wilshire/Normandie installation is completed, Metro will continue along the Red and Purple Lines, a process that Rick Jager estimates could take up to six months before moving on to the Green Line, then the Blue Line and finally, the Gold Line." But that doesn't mean they'll be in working condition. "A start date for the turnstiles to be operational hasn't been announced, nor whether they will begin operation "piecemeal" or wait until the system is installed at every rail stop."
TAP Cards will Replace Metro Day Passes in March
The colorful day passes that were released just a few years ago will be a thing of the past starting next month. As of March 15, the $5 fare for day passes will be on the new electronic, reusable and refillable TAP cards that were previously only available for monthly and weekly passes. With these, you can pre-load up to eight days worth of day passes.
Is Today the Day to Tap Your TAP?
Despite being in use in some capacity for some months now, today is apparently the day Metro will "unveil" the TAP card, and "will be introduced at Union Station by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the MTA board," reports the Daily Breeze.
FlyAway Fares Ascend
As noted earlier, the LA Board of Airport Commissioners today were scheduled to vote on increasing FlyAway fares a couple of dollars. Citing rising fuel costs, Van Nuys and Union Station routes increased from $4 to $6 and Westwood from $4 to $5 beginning Jan. 1, 2009. The board also voted a new discount fare of $4 for persons age 65 or over, disabled, or on Medicare (proof must be shown).

New Green Day Side Project
Okay, so in case you haven't heard, Green Day now has a new side project to tack onto the list, right smack under The Network. (You remember the Fembot song. Billie Joe's vocals did sort of give them away, but it was still exciting.) This one was reportedly leaked in a Green Day blog (are we talking "The Idiot Club" or what? I can't get in there, you have to pay), and is titled Foxboro...

Talking Terroni
It seems every where you look in local food blogging or restaurant reviewing, the buzz word of the moment is Terroni, a Canadian import that just opened up an outpost in West Hollywood serving up affordable Southern Italian fare. Natalie Houghton of the Daily News (via LA.com) sums it up on both sides of the scale: "At its best: Prices are reasonable, sharing is not a problem here, and sampling a variety of Italian...
Where to Go When You Gotta Go
Like a good man, a good toilet can be hard to find. And much like in the ways of love, it seems the more desperately you need one, the harder it is to find one. This need to pee freely--and in a clean environment--has sprung forth a website called MizPee, which keeps tabs of the toilets in several major cities, including our own. Site users can search by address and see how local loos...

One of the advantages of real flea markets over EBay is the ability to dig through piles of freaky stuff and come up with buried treasure. One of my favorite finds are collections of old recipe cards.

This December at the Silent Movie Theatre
One of the great things about living in L.A. is the profusion of movie choices available. You can see everything from Beowulf in 3-D at the Bridge's IMAX theater to Into the Wild in one of the Landmark's Living Rooms to a revival screening of Bananas at the New Beverly. One of the best choices for more eclectic fare is the Silent Movie Theater. Every month they program several series, any of which is...

Kings & Ducks Fail the Cool NHL Goalie Mask Test
Sports Illustrated busted with a sweet and comprehensive look at current-day NHL goalies and their colorful helmets. Sadly our local boys did not fare very well in comparison with some of the monsters that emboss a few of the masks, like the one above of Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars. They weren't embarrassingly bad, like some, but they're pretty near the bottom of the barrel. The Kings' Jason LaBarbera seems to have Metallica...
