Tonight In Rock: Thrice, The Books, Real Estate, Freelance Whales

Tonight Irvine-bred heavy rock outfit Thrice will be headlining the Avalon with none other than Boston-based experimental rock act the Dear Hunter. NY's own experimental musical duo the Books (LAist Review) are poised to grace the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. And, lastly, local indie rockers the Happy Hollows (LAist Review, #2, #3) will be taking on the penultimate night of their month-long residency at Spaceland with New Jersey-based psych-infused indie rockers Real Estate, One Trick Pony and Dios (Malos) (LAist Interview, Review, #2). But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch British indie pop quintet Fanfarlo (LAist Interview). LAist favorites, Queens' own indie pop buzz band Freelance Whales are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys, Fanfarlo, Nurses

Tonight NY-based alternative rock trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs (LAist Review) will be headlining the Pomona Fox Theater. English alternative rockers Arctic Monkeys are poised to take on the Hollywood Palladium with local pop rockers the Like. London's own indie pop act Fanfarlo will be gracing the Troubadour with Raleigh-bred lo-fi pop outfit Love Language. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Portland-based indie rockers Nurses, who will be opening for none other than Seattle's own pop quartet Throw Me The Statue. One of New Zealand's finest acts the Brunettes and local singer-songwriter Devon Williams are slated to perform as well.

Fanfare for British Rockers Fanfarlo - Meet Simon Balthazar

You know that giant, gaping hole in your heart where the new Arcade Fire album should be? Might I suggest filling some of it with Fanfarlo's debut disk Reservoirs. The British six piece outfit stuffs their tunes to the brim with horns, glockenspiels, chimes, violins, guitars, bass, drums, and Balthazar's lovely, haunting vocals. Lyrically the album is all about mysterious misfortunes inspired by ghosts, Howard Hughes, and UFOs, weaving stories that are as intricate as the melodies behind them. We chatted with Simon Balthazar last weekend about the new disk. Here is some of what was said.
