Orange County Fair Begins Today: Fried Food, Skateboarding & Luche Libre

It's summer and that means county fairs. While the LA County Fair is set to begin in September, Orange County's begins today and will run a longer one week longer than normal--through August 9th--because of a new schedule that closes the event on Mondays and Tuesdays.

One of our goals this year is to not be shopping and wrapping presents on Christmas Eve. But that means one has to now start thinking of what to buy and where to shop. So here's one good place to start: the art gallery Ghettogloss has announced the Silver Lake Art Craft & Vintage flea market that begins on November 15 and runs on Saturday and Sundays through December 21.

Designers & Agents, an indie fashion marketing company, is currently showing their spring line exclusively at the New Mart and Cooper Design Space downtown. This show is based on sustainable design and will feature several of the leading fashion designers in this field. The company brings together over 1,000 different collections to the forefront of the industry. They hope to be completely fashion-forward in a very community-based way.

Matt Bilferd brings his very meticulous artwork to Ghettogloss in Silverlake. The show entitled, "8teen,000" is literally comprised of 18,000 wooden pegs painted and placed in the wall to re-create 50's iconic cartoon images. The artist urges you to experience his work from all different angles, but no matter which way you look at it, it's pretty freaking awesome.

After all the salt consumed by eating tons of deep fried foods like avocado and Oreos and a huge brick of cheese fries leaves one desiring sugar. The easy answer is Dr. Bob's in the farming area of the fair. When National Geographic released their 10 Best of Everything guide for travelers, Dr. Bob's Handcrafted Ice Creams came out at number two on the list.

If yesterday's photo gallery of all the deep fried food to be found at the LA County Fair was not enough for you, then check this $8 brick of cheese fries out. Tip: the easiest way to eat it is to pick it up like a sandwich go nom nom nom...

Fans of deep-fried anything rejoice! The Orange County Fair opened its gates yesterday and will be welcoming crowds in Costa Mesa until August 3. There's tons of stuff going on there from Tuesdays through Sundays, including live performances, kids stuff, carnival games, animals, exhibits, and did we mention the food? The theme this year in the OC is "Say Cheese!" so some combination of cows, photo ops, and dairy products is sure to be in abundance. Die-hard fair-goers, consider this a primer for the LA County Fair, which runs September 5-28 this year.

Say Aloha to the the 50th state with a taste of the food and fun of Hawaii. Lots of Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, vendors with all sorts of goods, fresh floral leis, loads of food (shaved ice!!!!), and beer. Luckily it won't be a grillion degrees out in Northridge, but put on your Hawaiian Tropic just in case--that California sun still burns through the fog.

If the rain doesn't deter you from heading out today, there are some weekend-long festivals that might make it worth your time... Or you can hedge your bets and hang tight today and wait for Sunday--or in some cases Monday--to get in on the fun.

"So you know what you need to do to come off as authentic in San Pedro, right?" "Tell me!" We were all set to head off to the annual Lobster Fest held in San Pedro's charming seaside Ports O' Call. "You gotta call it Peeeeeedro." Peeeeeedro. Got it. Not that this was my first time searching out good times and good eats in this sunshiney little enclave nestled against the Port of Long Beach,...

Thank goodness the heat has beat a hasty retreat, because the Los Angeles County Fair begins today, with $1 admission until 5pm (it'll cost you $15 for an adult weekend ticket after that).
