Eye Nosh: Yatai Ramen Pop-Up at Breadbar

Eye Nosh: Yatai Ramen Pop-Up at Breadbar

Thrillist dubbed the Yatai Ramen Pop-Up "crazily meat-heavy," so perhaps vegans and vegetarians will want to steer clear of the 3rd Street location of Breadbar Monday-Saturday evenings through July 24th. The lowdown:

The menu's mostly noodle-based, with bowls full of marine poached egg, kurobuta pork belly, nori, and bamboo shoots featuring out-there additions including raw beef tenderloin, ox tail, foie gras, and truffle oil, [...] More-standard fare is also available, w/ straightforward-ramen options including sea salt, miso, and soy sauce; there's also two types of potstickers, one a dumpling stuffed w/ pigs feet and the other w/ kale

Eye Nosh: Scottish Eggs at Madame Matisse

Eye Nosh: Scottish Eggs at Madame Matisse

Madame Matisse is a perfect spot for a late breakfast. The inside may be cramped, and the al fresco dining a little close to traffic. (Note to restaurant manager: consider tenting the outside like Millie's has done). Still, the delicious breakfasts are worth it and you get used to the honking trucks pretty fast when a big plate is set down in front of you. more ›

Eye Nosh: Would You Eat Dirt From a Food Truck?

Eye Nosh: Would You Eat Dirt From a Food Truck?

Seems like people these days will eat anything...if it comes on a food truck. A crepe filled with "dirt" is no exception, as LAist Featured Photos pool contributor Joits found out when a buddy ordered up this sweet treat from the Crepes Bonaparte Truck. The truck, an off-shoot of a brick-and-mortar creperie, rolls mostly around the OC. This particular item riffs on a childhood dish where Oreo cookie crumbs look like soil and gummy worms, well, look like worms. Does it taste better--or as good as--it looks? The "dirt" crepe was enjoyed, and the overall experience "was pretty good and the prices were decent too." more ›

Yes, we know: Tease, tease, tease... more ›

Eye Nosh: The Patty Wagon Rolls Out the Burgers

Last week another food truck hit the streets of Los Angeles, and LAist Featured Photos pool contributor nomsnotbombs had a taste. Touting burgers with a conscience, The Patty Wagon is poised to give other burger trucks--maybe burgers in general?--a run for their money, particularly with their focus on locally-sourced ingredients and patties made with grass-fed beef. Noms Not Bombs the blogger explains the concept:

If you're not the Food Inc.-watching, The Omnivore's Dilemma-reading type, feeding cows grass (rather than corn, grain or other animals) is better for them, you and the environment. In short, if every truck needs a "gimmick," Patty Wagon's is sustainability and great taste.
The "great taste" part was found in the two slider-sized mini-burgers (yup, they're keeping 'em mini) she tried, the "Keep Your Sunny Side Up ($3.00, L- slider served on ciabatta bread with gremolata) and I Get a Kick Out of You ($3.25, R- roasted jalapenos, pancetta and provolone cheese)." Ready to drool, carnivores? Check this response: "My favorite bites of the slider were where the oil from the gremolata and the meat had soaked through to the ciabatta." The Patty Wagon also has homemade dill pickles, and desserts. Keep your eye out for them! [Twitter] more ›

Eye Nosh: The London's Boxwood Cafe's Alice-Themed Tea

With the release (and subsequent big box office take) of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland lots of local shops and restaurants are capitalizing on the movie's enchanting motif and creating Alice-themed specials. Recession Obsession Eye Nosh: Old School Pie

Recession Obsession Eye Nosh: Old School Pie

LAist is a big fan of Philippe's The Original. The restaurant has been in Los Angeles for so long that you can French Dip Like It's 1909 (and don't forget their breakfast.) For $2-$3 a slice, you can have a generous piece of one of their many pies. They seem to have about a dozen different fruit and cream pies, each looking up at you longingly from below the glass. Need something more? Wash it down with a beverage. Most are under a buck. Philippe's is easily accessible on the Metro too. more ›

Once upon a time, LAist ate our way through Thai Town, and that included a stop at Sapp's Coffee Shop, which is not exactly a coffee shop in the traditional American sense, but rather a place known for its spicy, authentic, Eye Nosh-worthy Boat Noodles. Eye Nosh: Omakase Dinner at Toshi Sushi

Some of us have a longstanding love affair with sushi. For many that means loyal repeat visits to a beloved spot, and for others its a never-ending quest to taste and try new places. One favorite way to enjoy a sushi meal is to hand yourself over to the chef and to say "omakase," which translates into "it's up to you." This is how LAist Featured Photos pool contributor djjewelz approached a recent dinner at Sushi Toshi in Little Tokyo. He left us some images to ogle, and we had to follow up with him to learn more about what appeared to be a beautiful meal. He explains: more ›

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

If we're talking nosh, there's no item perhaps more quintessential than pastrami on rye. The one pictured above hailed from a plate served up at Langer's, a deli that has been a longtime favorite of locals, but has now been praised for offering up the best of its kind in the whole country. The accolade comes from writer David Sax, whose pursuit of the pastrami--and other deli delights--was profiled recently in the LA Times. more ›
