Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

If we're talking nosh, there's no item perhaps more quintessential than pastrami on rye. The one pictured above hailed from a plate served up at Langer's, a deli that has been a longtime favorite of locals, but has now been praised for offering up the best of its kind in the whole country. The accolade comes from writer David Sax, whose pursuit of the pastrami--and other deli delights--was profiled recently in the LA Times.

Eye Nosh: Mix & Match at STREET

One menu option at Susan Feniger's STREET offers diners a half size of any salad and street bite plate. This Mix & Match plate has Saigon Chicken Salad with long beans, celery leaf, carrots, cucumber, tomato with chopped peanut, chile, and soy lime dressing next to Kaya Toast (from Singapore) made from toasted bread and coconut jam served with a soft fried egg drizzled in soy and white pepper.

Eye Nosh: Brunching at Silver Lake's Reservoir

It's that time again: Weekend breakfast. Or, if you prefer: Brunch. May we tempt you with this Eye Nosh-able shot of the Ricotta Pancakes with Lemon Creme Fraiche and Blueberry Sauce, Side of Seasonal Fruit and Maple Syrup enjoyed by food blogger and LAist Featured Photos pool contributor LA & OC Foodventures? Need some words to go with your picture? How about this, from his blog report

Eye Nosh: Kimchee Fried Rice at Shin BBQ

This is the kimchee fried rice at Shin BBQ in Hollywood (corner of Wilcox and Selma) The food at Shin is great. This time I tried the special house dish Kimchee Fried Rice. It arrived with this gorgeous fried egg on it. Then we mixed in the egg. There is some cooked beef mixed through also. And best of all it's $5!!

Eye Nosh: Fresh Summertime Artichokes Pizza at Mozza

Taste approved, this seasonal pizza at Pizzeria Mozza is crazy good and will only last until fresh artichokes are out of stock (likely by September). This $15 pie is made with stracchino, a soft and creamy cheese, and is topped with shaved artichokes, lemon & olives.

Eye Nosh: Bounty of the Season at Angeli Caffe

Evan Kleiman is well known on the local foodie scene thanks to her tasty weekly KCRW show Good Food, and her involvement in many local food endeavors and events. Of course, Kleiman is also the owner of the fabulous Angeli Caffe, where local foods, including market-fresh veggies, are celebrated with an Italian flair. This is their colorful season antipasto plate, as captured recently by LAist's Lifestyle Editor Julie Wolfson, featuring asparagus with parmesan, crisp carrots, farro with beets, mozzarella and olives. Simple, fresh, and delicious.

Eye Nosh: Burgers at The Fix in Silver Lake

The Fix Burger in Silver Lake is enjoying their first summer in business, after opening last fall to mostly rave reviews. They've got all sorts of specialty burgers on the menu, and can serve you up a patty made of beef, buffalo, turkey, or even ostrich. Yelpers hoot about their garlic or sweet potato fries, as well as their shakes, and just how well-cooked the burgers are--no matter what the meat.

Eye Nosh: Cheese Fries For Grown-Ups

Word on the street was BOA Steakhouse's Truffled Cheese Fries were worth some real estate in my gut. A recent visit to BOA's Ocean-Adjacent location in Santa Monica proved that to be true. This extra-large "family style" side dish expanded my idea of what makes "cheese fries" (and my waistline.) These BOA Artery Constrictors are classy and crafted for discerning adults -- they're awash in Gruyere cheese and feature truffle oil.

Eye Nosh: Now That's What a Lamb Burger's All About!

Here in the Golden State we perfected the art of the fast food burger, but at the eatery The Golden State they may have perfected the art of the Lamb burger. LAist's Lifestyle Editor Julie Wolfson happened to hit up the restaurant on a day when their special was the Lamb Burger and a Greek Salad. Before she could dig in she paused to take this Eye Nosh snap of the plate, and when she was done, there wasn't much to say except "It rocks!" (She also stopped by recently to chat with Golden State's owners; read her delicious interview to learn more about the duo behind the burgers and beer.)

Eye Nosh: Going Local for Breakfast

Good morning! Are you ready for breakfast?

Eye Nosh: A Cuban Lunch in Silver Lake

Silver Lake's Cafe Tropical is a tasty oasis in the rarely-Cuban desert that is Los Angeles. Their Cuban sandwich (sandwich cubano) and Cuban coffee (cafe cubano) do the trick. The sandwich -- where ham, roasted pork, cheese, pickles, mustard, and Cuban bread are dance partners -- is mixture that makes Communism seen tolerable. And the coffee... this espresso-based stimulant, layered with steamed milk, will light your fire and please your palate. Tropical's many oversized deserts are a topic for a future nosh.

Eye Nosh: Bacon Pizza at Mozza

Highland and Melrose is becoming a small, but nice mecca for good spots to eat. With Susan Feniger's street food themed restaurant just opening up, you've got three solid places to eat. The other two include the Red Pearl Kitchen and Mozza, which brings us back to the above photo. It's a goat cheese, leeks, scallions and bacon pizza, to which LAist Lifestyle Editor Julie Wolfson says, "um...yum!"

Is food better when the progeny of a celebrity makes it? Nah, not likely (although if you're Chef Ben Ford, son of Harrison, being cute might help). But good food can be had at Culver City's Ford's Filling Station, as discovered recently by LAist Featured Photos' and foodblogger oranges are not the only fruit who went for a celebratory meal recently at the eatery.

Eye Nosh: Yuca's for a Cheesburger & a Taco

Burger devotees in Los Angeles will never tire of touting their favorite go-to joint for the all-American meat-and-bun dish, and some make finding the best a life-long (and noble pursuit). LAist Featured Photos pool member oranges are not the only fruit recently submitted these shots of a meal at Yuca's that was mostly about the burger. On their blog, What You See is What You Eat, the story of the meal is told:

The cheeseburger here isn’t Pete’s, it isn’t Father’s Office, it isn’t even In-N-Out. It’s not trying for this. Consistent with the pure nature of its tacos and burritos, the burgers here don’t try to distract you with fancy trimmings - no aiolis, no grilled onions. Nope, their cheeseburgers harks back to that wonderful time when you were at the transition stage between the Happy Meal and Big Mac — a simple cheeseburger without the distraction of a cheap toy or a patty sitting on the second story. This is, simply: bun, ketchup + mustard, lettuce, tomato, patty, bun. Simply. The only thing that differentiates this burger from the one that you’d make on your grill is that your grill doesn’t have decades worth of well seasoned and well worn flavors of asada, carnitas, etc seared into it. Yuca’s cooks the patty on the same surface that they’re making all the other meat fillings, so you get a patty that is the best of all animal kingdoms. You can eat this in all of 2 minutes, but at ~$2, it’s exactly right for what you get. And, with a taco or two, just hits the spot.

LAist Featured Photos contributor Tales of an L.A. Addict tempts us with their photos from the popular family owned Hof's Hut in Long Beach (though they have expanded with a few more SoCal locations). Those criss cut fries in photo #2 look really good right now.

Eye Nosh: Everyday is Like Fry-Day!

Are we all over our New Year's resolutions to cut out fatty fried foods yet? Because if you're in the mood to Cherchez Les Frites in Los Angeles, it's time to spill the beans potatoes on where you like to go.

Eye Nosh: Ham Hocks for Lunch at The Pantry

Ham, anyone? This is what LAist Featured Photos contributor ~db~ had on New Year's Day for lunch at The Pantry in downtown. There were enough leftovers for two more meals.

There's nothing better than a leisurely breakfast or brunch after a couple holiday weeks of get togethers, shindigs and parties. Especially after a night of drinking, a warm and farinaceous meal is sometimes just the ticket. In our LAist Featured Photos collection on Flickr, Sparkylulu tempts us with his photos from Blu Jam Cafe on Melrose. His experience was "unreal," filled with "deliciousness." Yeah, it looks so.

The much awaited Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet--the supposed oldest restaurant and sallon in the city--reopened in downtown Los Angeles last week. People flocked and they reviewed. One of those was LAist Featured Photos contributor on Flickr, two wheels good, who submitted this photo.

Street vending may be illegal (well, for the most part), but the food porn it produces is always quite a treat. On Flickr, LAist Featured Photos contributor bscott224 submits this colorful display of onions, peppers and mustard atop a hot dog bought near Maple and Olympic in downtown's Fashion District. Enjoy, it's almost dinner!

Food bloggers What You See is What You Eat are back in the LAist Featured Photos pool with this refreshing and unusual cocktail from The Hungry Cat in Hollywood. They said: "Where else are you going to see the bartender take a slice of avocado, muddle it up with some hard spirits, and then give it to you like it is normal to muddle whole slices of fruit and put it in a drink?" Yes, $13 might be a bit pricey for some, but the Cat's original cocktails are always worth the splurge.

Prompted by our claim that Vito's Pizza is the best in the Los Angeles area, blogger Allen L., who used to bitch about the quality of pizza here some 20 years ago, visited the West Hollywood pizza joint to see for himself...

LAist Featured Photos' oranges are not the only fruit took a tip from Jonathan Gold and headed over to KyoChon for some post-Wiltern chicken. The whole experience gets the full treatment on their What You See is What You Eat blog, but we'll serve up some tasty morsels, like those leftover pieces of chicken pictured above.

Did you skip breakfast this morning? (Shame on you if you did!) Or maybe that Starbucks scone/protein bar/power smoothie/leftover cold pizza left something to be desired. Perhaps this enticing croissant sandwich found by LAist Featured Photos pool contributor pink_fish13 can remind you of how good breakfast can be. (And, well, okay, how incredibly rich and buttery and grease-laden it can be too...croissants are basically pure butter and, yes, there appears to be bacon in between that egg and cheese goodness.)

There are so many better places to eat at the Farmers Market. Well, one or two. The Gumbo Pot is not one of them.To each his own, right? Fans or foes of The Gumbo Pot, pitch in to our comments stew and tell us what you think. Should we run to...or from...The Gumbo Pot?

LAist Featured Photos contributor ~db~ submitted this tasty treat for us and writes this about it:

So we're back to talking breakfast... And why not? It is the most important meal of the day, after all! LAist Featured Photos pool contributor pink_fish13 captured her meal at Grub (somewhere LAist checked out for lunch back in '05) and we agree that it's high time we revisit the quaint Hollywood cottage first thing in the morning.

Sometimes you just have to go all out and go with your gut...which is what led LAist Featured Photos contributor ~db~ on this food-venture that he shared with us:

Last Monday I crossed another one off my 1,000,000 things to do before I die list. I headed over to The Gumbo Pot at Farmers Market and ordered up this feast for lunch. All I really wanted was the Gumbo YaYa and Hush Puppies. When I found out the gumbo also came with a side, I selected the cole slaw, which they make there. I didn't even know about the corn bread until it arrived on the plate. And even though it's against the rule, I decided to get a couple oysters, just to disgust my niece and please my palate. The Gumbo YaYa is just under $7, the hush puppies are about $1.50, and the oysters are a buck apiece. Everything was Real Good, though I've had better hush puppies and would have skipped them if I knew about the corn bread.

We seem to have a thing for breakfast these days in our Eye Nosh series. But why not? After all, it's the most important meal of the day. And when it's good it is very, very good. And this dish of breakfast goodness from Kitchen 24 in Hollywood submitted to our LAist Featured Photos pool by ellewoodite looks downright fantastic.

"At Pann's Diner, the waffles can't be missed!" wrote LAist Featured Photos contributor staceyviera about this photo.
