Tonight, they tip their hats to one of them going going on between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. near USC's campus and Exposition Park at Figueroa Street and 41st Street. "Our message is simple: if we catch you driving drunk, you will be arrested," says the LAPD. more ›

Natural History Museum's Front Yard to be a Wilderness Haven

Natural History Museum officials yesterday revealed plans to expand the facility's programming area by 50 percent with the addition of a 3.5-acre urban wilderness area called North Campus (but that's just a working title). Located mainly between the museum building and Exposition Boulevard, where a Metro Expo Line station will be located, the $30 million plan will bring interactive outdoor exhibits, a new main entrance to the Museum, and a new car park (this is how they explain it: "a nature-filled structure that will feature a canopy of flowering vines and hummingbird and butterfly habitats creating a 'park' like setting instead of a stark concrete parking garage.) more ›

Butterflies, Burgers, and Bones: A Day in Exposition Park

Butterflies, Burgers, and Bones: A Day in Exposition Park

Some mornings, you wake up in a wandering mood: after a strong cup of coffee and a survey of the weather, we decided to peek beyond the veil of the early morning haze and venture southeast. We forsook the freeways for the more scenic route of Sunset Boulevard, through Hollywood east to Western, then south, south, south beyond the 10, through K-town and past endless strip-mall Iglesias de Dios and pupuserias. Wonderful! As we... more ›

Football Frenzy

LAist thinks the Rose Bowl renovation plan is a good one for the city of Pasadena. It's important to remember Pasadena is not debating building a football stadium. The LAist Interview: John Chase, City of West Hollywood

Ably processing Los Angeles’s extraordinary built environment requires thinkers who can look it through a dynamic lens that takes into consideration way more than what’s typically thought of as “good” architecture. Understanding LA means peeking into the cracks of the city and embracing what some might dismiss as sheer vulgarity. Moreover, creatively adding to the physical fabric of our city and meeting its needs beyond the strip mall paradigm necessitates a deeply complex appreciation for Los Angeles and its environs, a keen historical perspective, and design know-how. more ›
