Tonight legendary English blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Clapton will be performing at Hollywood Bowl with Steve Winwood. Brooklyn-based buzz band Amazing Baby are poised to stop by Origami Vinyl early on in the evening. And, lastly, local country troubadours Leslie and the Badgers will be headlining Spaceland with none other than the Chapin Sisters and Olin and the Moon (LAist Interview) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Echo Curio, which we rarely do, to catch Best Coast, an LA-based pop project of Bethany Consentino of Pocahaunted along with Bobb Bruno. NY-based folk rockers Soft Black are slated to kick things off.

Before Live Aid, Farm Aid & Chef Aid came The Secret Policemen's Ball - which made the mold for the benefit concert, broke it, taped it back together, and ran with it. With a wealth of British comedy (including The Pythons, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry & Rowan Atkinson) and musical virtuosos (Pete Townshend, Sting, Eric Clapton & Phil Collins in then-unheard-of "unplugged" performances) donating their talents for Amnesty International, the show & tie-in albums, films & tapes, became a phenomenon

                     

Morrison Hotel Gallery hosted the opening of Pattie Boyd’s photographs Saturday night, where the still-stunning Boyd chatted effusively with guests and old friends (although no Ringo appearance as rumored.) The exhibit focuses on Boyd’s beginning work, giving a remarkable view into a private world that only a Beatle wife – and later, Eric Clapton’s – could have. In one shot, a dreamy eyed, shirtless George gazes into the camera, sunglasses at his side, in a bedside afterglow that only she could have captured. In India, Paul, George, and John laze about chatting, either oblivious to (or so comfortable with) her lens that the division between photographer and subject disappears. Oddly, the Clapton shots – while better, technique-wise, (or so Elise says, being the photographer here) – lack the palpable charisma found in the other photos. Or maybe I’m biased after reading Boyd’s bio.

Because George Harrison was my favorite Beatle, I devoured Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me, a memoir by his first wife Pattie Boyd (of whom I confess I was, in my Beatle phase, horribly jealous) within days of its publication last year. Since recovering from her marriages, Pattie has become known as a photographer. This Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m., a show of her photographs opens at the Morrison Hotel Gallery on Sunset Boulevard. She will read from Wonderful Tonight this evening at 7 p.m. at Book Soup.

It was either 1986 or '87. LAist was living in Inglewood within walking distance of the Fabulous Forum. We were young and impressionable. We had heard of the legend of "Clapton is God", but we were also fascinated by a new guy named Robert Cray who was just breaking into the scene with a blues tune that was actually getting played on MTV - something unheard of unless your name was Stevie Ray. So we walked down to the Forum, bought some tickets for face value from the box office and sat in the very back of the arena. Cray's set was damn good and we thought, ok British legend, let's see what you've got. And let's just say that even in the back row of the Forum, this would-be blogger was so completely blown away that we too followed suit and scribbled "Clapton is God" in the men's room, which we are certain will be repeated late tonight after the former Cream guitarist converts some new blood.
