Photo by highervision via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr This evening a public viewing will be held for slain LA High football star Jamiel Shaw, with funeral services to follow tomorrow. Shaw's tragic murder has prompted many LA residents to refocus on the senselessness of gang-related violence. Go, stop, go, stop: Commuters northbound on the 57 and the 605 transitioning to the 210 westbound this morning were greeted by the new traffic......

Shepard Fairey (left) with Dericc Swinfard of Monster Media Inc. Swinfard printed and delivered the super-sized image pro bono. After discovering a massive Shepard Fairey-designed Obama print off Sunset yesterday, we went hunting for the background story, which led straight to the artist himself. The giant billboard (at 1331 W. Sunset) in question marks the location of Fairey's new HQ: Studio Number One with the soon-to-open Subliminal Projects gallery on the first floor. Shepard......

To see how this giant poster got here, check poil11's flickr. Shepard Fairey's Obama print appeared on the side of this building in Elysian Park over the weekend. Perhaps the "hope" message will serve as much-needed inspiration for the Dodger Stadium tenants around the corner (except, of course, on the three June dates when Obama's beloved White Sox visit Chavez Ravine). Dedicated bike paths, more bike lanes, and bike rental programs, oh my! KCBS2 is reporting today that City Councilman Ed Reyes put forth a motion during the City Council meeting to make his council district more bike friendly. He has asked city officials "to create a plan that includes bike-only roadways, more bike lanes on wide streets and sidewalks, and a public bicycle prgram that would allow Angelenos to rent bikes online or at Metro......

Want a Wii this holiday season? Well toooooo fuckin bad. The best you can hope for is a rain check certificate that will entitle you to a console at some point in January. Even the Wii people themselves are now admitting what a mess they've made of manufacturing this thing. Two members of a terrorist cell have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to wage war: the splinter group was "was poised to attack......

Where are the best pickup soccer venues in the greater Los Angeles area? -- Bankole O Los Angeles is an enormous city, and soccer is a popular sport. You can find games being played just about everywhere! If you're looking to avoid organized leagues, there's soccer played on a regular basis at Rancho Park, Pan Pacific Park, the Westwood Rec Center, and Mar Vista Park (they have a new-ish turf field which is frequently booked,......

The country's safest city (some years, anyway), is getting less and less so: a shooting this morning at a Simi Valley tire store left two dead and two injured. Police have ruled out robbery and suspect a personal motive in the attack. There are a few updates on the potential water cutbacks -- although Los Angeles is okay for now (thanks to the Owens Valley), the time may come when water rationing will be......

Do you walk your dog in Elysian Park? And maybe sometimes you did not collect the dog's poop in the plastic grocery bag or the corn-starch bio-degradable bag because the damned dog was chasing a lizard or squirrel or some un-neutered hound a half-mile away? Well, here is the Brunch of Your Nightmares: Sunday, July 15 is the Dog Poop Scoop Event, from 8 a.m. to Noon. Bags are provided, as are snacks and......

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has sparked a fire of discussion with his secret plan -- codenamed Five Ton Gorilla -- to turn Chavez Ravine into a baseball/football/mall complex. Memos about the plan were mailed anonymously to the Boston Herald and printed in an article yesterday; maybe someone in McCourt's hometown thought the idea was as crummy as we do. Don't get us wrong; we think LA is seriously ready for an NFL franchise. What's......
