Elvis Presley On Milton Berle: The Pelvis That Shook The World

Elvis Presley On Milton Berle: The Pelvis That Shook The World

Elvis Presley's June 5, 1956 appearance on The Milton Berle Show was not his first television performance, or even his first hang with Uncle Miltie. However THIS performance, shot at the former NBC Studios Hollywood at Sunset and Vine, was the debut of the scandalous Presley pelvis -- a shimmying, swiveling, swirling frenzy that altered the sexual orbit of televised musical expression with a few Forrest Gump-ian hip motions. more ›

LAist Film Calendar 01/06-01/09: LACMA Hits The Road, Cinefamily Has Dogteeth

The year's just begun, and LACMA already wants to drop out. Their Golden Age of Road Movies series kicks off this week with counterculture combos Five Easy Pieces & Play It As It Lays (Friday night) and Easy Rider & Zabriskie Point (Saturday night). Actress Karen Black appears in-person after Five Easy Pieces, whereas Saturday's program goes a little easier on the pieces, halving LACMA's standard admission to $5. It's all in conjunction with LACMA's William Eggleston exhibition, which doesn't hit the road until January 16th. more ›

Found in L.A.: Long Live The King!

Yesterday would have been Elvis Presley's 75th birthday, and while Elvis, has indeed left the building, his spirit--and likeness--remains. For example, the GRAMMY museum honored the King by opening a new exhibit of rare photos yesterday, and folks with teeth as sweet as Presley's can taste the cupcake named for him at Crumbs Bakeshop. Celebrations continue through the weekend for Presley, and so we dove into our LAist's Featured Photos pool to find Elvis is all over Los Angeles, all the time. Happy 75th! more ›

The Hammer comes out swinging this week! Thursday, see Youth in Revolt - with your very own Michael Cera & Miguel Arteta! If the line's too long, hike it up to campus for another youthful, revolting picture, when Melnitz Movies hosts Australian Oscar submission Samson & Delilah and director Warwick Thornton. If that wasn't enough Hammer, UCLA's Film & Television Archive comes out slinging, with a series devoted to Billy The Kid & Jesse James. Extra, Extra: Of Pasadena & Pot, Health & Death

Extra, Extra: Of Pasadena & Pot, Health & Death

The IRS investigation at the All Saints Episcopal Church over a 2004 "anti-war sermon" has been dropped, the church announced today at a press conference. The church is now asking for an apology and some clarification. Remember all those pot-house busts in the Inland Empire? It appears that all these drug homes in high-end areas are funded and employed by gangs from China. Aren't hospitals always in trouble? "Nearly two dozen private hospitals in... more ›

American Idol: What a Cop Out!

But it was for a good cause, right? LAist watched the entire two hours of American Idol's telethon tonight, which was broadcast at both the regular Idol studios and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. And while we admire Ryan Seacrest and company for trying to do something good for kids living in poverty in both America and Africa (checkout myspace.com/idolgivesback or the Idol Gives Back page for ways to donate), we felt cheated and... more ›

What If Dakota Fanning Got Raped And Nobody Cared?

What If Dakota Fanning Got Raped And Nobody Cared?

Park City, UTAH - Don't worry, Dakota Fanning is safe and sound. She hasn't actually been raped. It's the character in her latest film that gets attacked. And thank goodness, because Fanning is the best thing about the otherwise dreadful Hounddog. Although the film's rape scene, which was filmed when Fanning was all of 12, has been getting so much grief (this morning's Sundance screening in Salt Lake City was greeted with protests), it's... more ›

No Longer Live from SXSW: We Miss It Already Edition

No Longer Live from SXSW: We Miss It Already Edition

We ran from our very last SXSW event - the It Takes a Nation of Millions to Make this Panel panel - and straight to the airport to return to Los Angeles. Mena Suvari was on the plane and we wanted badly to chat her up but didn't; we got caught up in traffic on the 101 (no shock) because of a Sherman Oaks lockdown while the police searched for a bank robbery suspect (again, no shock) and, now, we see there is a week of rain in our future. Wait, are we sure LAist hasn't turned into Seattlest? more ›
