Common - "The People" "The People" was one of our most-played summer jamz. It was on Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothin" sampler because Kanye produced it and listen to how sweet it is. It's the sort of non-thug, uplifting, positive hip-hop that people once talked about, but now people are buying. This is the direction BEP could have gone if they hadn't chosen the path of the lowest common denominator aka the Gwen Stefani......

We listen to a lot of music each week. Mostly new music because we have ADD and are bored by everything. Because we're saving the world we don't always have time to review all the new music we're listening to so on Fridays we do a brief summary of what's been booming from the iTunes. Sonic Youth - Destroyed Room Arcade Fire - Neon Bible John Oszajca - Elephant Graveyard Fishbone - Still Stuck......

What NME wrote about local band Mere Mortals yesterday: The hotly tipped LA-based band are known for adeptly combining elements of Britpop and psychedelic rock reminiscent of Primal Scream or The Jesus And Mary Chain, earning them 'best unsigned band' accolades left and right. Mere Mortals @ Spaceland The Fuxedos @ Safari Sam's The Wreckers, Kate Voegele @ The Roxy Eleni Mandell @ The Bordello Intervention, Mathew Jordan, Anaura, The Dimes @ The Mint......

By week's end, LA is regularly littered with a handful of free rags. Combined, these publications put the Tribune Company's Spring Street operation LA Times to shame as far as reporting on the dozens of municipalities that make up this metropolis of more than 12 million people. LAist reads the weeklies so you don't have to. If there's anything we missed, let us know, or better yet drop it in the comments section below.......

Eleni Mandell, with her sixth full length release, Miracle of Five, hit up the Echo for the KCRW release party last night. The packed and almost giddy crowd filled with literally all walks of life (think middle aged baldies, a trannie, and the usual hipsters) were swaying along to EM’s hushed, moody, jazzy folk. Is jazzy folk even a thing? If it isn’t Mandell has made it one. Highlight of the evening? The Echo......

We last caught up with Becky Stark, Lavender Diamond's 25-year-old frontwoman with the delicate voice in June 2005. Last weekend, we were lucky to chase her down near chicken corner for an update.
