Tonight's event offerings bring tales of death row, the Inland Empire, Earth Day 2012, teenage nightmares and couch surfing. So get off your couch and get out! Los Angeles is waiting.
Pencil This In: $10 Beer Buckets, Gus Van Sant's 'Paranoid Park' & 'Couch Surfers' at El Cid
cARTel's 'Sound/Stage' Brings Back Old Hollywood Glamour at El Cid
The cARTel Collaborative Arts LA series strives to build a link between today's creative community of local artists and those yesteryear Hollywood hopefuls that came eras before. This homage to L.A.'s art ancestors blends modern aesthetic sensibilities with classic charm for a night of (in the words of the director Negin Singh) "sustainable story-telling with a little bit of glamour."
Indie Takeover: El Cid Owner Buys Los Globos in Silver Lake
When Los Globos hosted a FYF Fest pre-show last night featuring Glass Candy and Chromatics, the choice of venue baffled at least one blogger. It turns out that it was a hint of what is to come: El Cid owner Steve Edelson bought the venue two months ago, and handed over management to Echo Park Records.
Goin' Local: Sunset Junction Adds "Locals Only" Stage
Sunset Junction Street Fest is adding a sixth stage this summer to feature some of L.A.'s finest local bands. The Locals Only stage will actually be off-street, inside everyone's favorite mariachi/punk rock/Mexican restaurant/dance club El Cid.
Loud & Lewd? Neighbors Want The City To Shutter El Cid
Descending the lumpy, sub-sidewalk stairs into the courtyard of El Cid is often the beginning, or the end, of a fascinating evening in Silver Lake. Whether the flamenco-optional musical venue / bar / dance club / restaurant / screening courtyard / birthday-party-location-must-have-for-anyone-under-27 / Santa meet-up is packed tight like skinny jeans or awkwardly open with empty seats for a small touring act, there's a good chance you'll be leaving with a story.
Meet Tensnake: Beat Maker, Booty Shaker [Updated]
Coming straight outta Hamburg (Germany,) Marco “Tensnake” Niemerski is dance music’s man of the moment. With Tensnake, an it-producer tag makes sense. He’s got the underground cred (thanks to original productions and remixes,) pop radio play in England, and now a big-label double-CD compilation. Tensnake’s no joke.

Angel Taylor, Annie Stela & Earl Greyhound @ Hotel Cafe, 12/17/08
Earlier this month, Brooklyn-based rock trio Earl Greyhound (MySpace) headlined with an acoustic set at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, supported by singer-songwriter openers Angel Taylor (MySpace) and Annie Stela (MySpace) -- previously mentioned here. Attendance was unfortunately down from a typical night there but understandable given the torrential weather.
Follow Him on Twitter & He'll Give You Free Local Music
Nick Adler of the Roxy may have been one of first local music venues to venture out into the Twitterverse, but others are quickly following suit. One of them is Scott Sterling, promoter of The Fold in Silver Lake that books shows at the Silverlake Lounge, Tangier, Redwood, El Cid and Bordello.
Tonight in Rock: Rock The Bike!!
Tomorrow is the finish up the AMGEN Tour of California in Pasadena. But before hitting the old money city, they're headed towards Santa Clarita this afternoon (where Six Flags Magic Mountain has decided to stay put). From 4 to 10 p.m. tonight “Rock the Bike,” a free outdoor cycling expo and music festival, will bring together an array of people following the stage 6 finish. Various bands will be playing and headlining act, the Gin Blossoms, will be on stage around 8 p.m. (of course, if it rains, who knows what will happen, this is an outdoor event). The tour itself is aired on the cable channel, VERSUS, at 2 p.m. today and tomorrow. For more check our TV weekend listings.
Tonight in Rock: Cowboy, Blues & Rock
We've never been to the Celebrity Center for a concert, but we can vouch for Cowboy (not Country!) musician Dave Stamey if you're into that kind of thang. Still, for those inclined to roots music, The Arthur Adams Band will be at the Baked Potato in Studio City playing blues.
DVD Tuesday: Does Pure Evil Exist?
One of my favorite films of 2007 arrives to DVD today, , rectify that mistake today by buying the new, juicier version.
Tonight in Rock: Lucy Lawless, Jim Ward, Astra Heights
Yesterday was Xena: Princess Warrior picket day at the WGA Strike. Tonight, Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, will be bashing heads and belting out songs over at the Roxy. And earlier this morning, we interviewed Talib Kweli who will be at the House of Blues down the street from the Roxy at House of Blues.
Tonight in Rock: Dan Deacon, WHY? & Harry Nilsson
Thanks to those who responded yesterday to help make this LAist column more useful. You can still chime in, it's never too late. Today, here's a short form list of our picks with select MP3s embedded after the jump.
Pencil This In: Thursday
Sometimes too much holiday cheer is a very, very bad thing. Especially the liquid kind. Hence, the lateness of today's column. But here's the down and dirty on what's happening around town tonight:
Tonight in Rock: Van Halen, RZA, Stevie, The Knitters
It's a rockin' Friday night in LA with Stevie, Van Halen, RZA, and R. Kelly in town, a XMAS Sweater Party at Crash Mansion featuring local indie up'n comers, and cow punk comes alive at Safari Sam's, with X side project (since 1982) The Knitters.

Redd Kross Sonic Youth Afterparty
After the amazing Redd Kross - Sonic Youth show at the Greek, we all headed over to an afterparty at El Cid. Thurston had asked punk legends Saccharine Trust to perform their classic album, Pagan Icons. The album thing was kind of a theme. If you want to know where bands like Nirvana got their inspiration from, in addition to Daydream Nation, you really need to add Pagan Icons and Born Innocent to your...

Tonight in Rock in LA - Arcade Fire, Quiet Company
They're the best band you'll see all summer. Yes, even better than Rage Against the Machine. Pound-for-pound Arcade Fire has more songs, better songs, and you can't call it comeback. Plus the Canadians will be playing two nights in a venue in a park that will still smell of the remnants of an actual fire. Unless Rage has a stage that looks like a 1970s super computer, another point must be awarded to the Arcade Fire who have many more vids that you can see after the jump.
Tonight in Rock in LA - The Knitters, The Germs, America, Aimee Mann, Mike Watt, Mezzanine Owls

Tonight in Rock in LA - Dinosaur Jr, Keane, Nikka Costa
Congratulations to our Keane winner Stephanie. She will be seeing Keane tonight at the Gibson, not the Greek, the Gibson. After the fire a few concerts had to be moved from the Greek to the Gibson, so if you have tickets to the show tonight head to Universal Studios, not the smoldering hills of Los Feliz. We're also being told not to miss Anjani @ Hotel Cafe tonight where she will be being presented...
