Minnesota Timberwolves defeat LA Clippers 95-94. The Timberwolves made it rain three’s throughout the night with former UCLA Bruin Kevin Love knocked down five of the 11 Minnesota sank.
LAst Night's Action: No Love for Clips
Kings Have No Answers Against Oilers
The Kings claim they want to be an elite NHL team. You could have fooled me after watching their 3-0 loss to the upstart Edmonton Oilers.
“In the second period they pretty much dominated every aspect of the game,” captain Dustin Brown said dejectedly in front of his locker.
Kings Acquire Dustin Penner at Trade Deadline, Re-Sign Williams
Edmonton Oilers forward Dustin Penner joins the ranks of Sean O'Donnell, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma, Lubomir Visnovsky and Kyle Calder: players who have played for both the Ducks and the Kings.
LAst Night's Action: Bulls Clip Clippers Home Win Streak
Chicago Bulls defeat LA Clippers 106-88. The Clippers came into the game with a Los Angeles record nine-game winning streak at home. But the impressive Chicago Bulls came into STAPLES Center and avenged their Dec. 18 loss.
Kings Fight Through Shootout for Win Over Oilers
All of the signs were pointing to a Kings win. The flashing red goal light behind the Oilers net malfunctioning, flashing constantly during a stretch in the second period. The net caving in over the Oilers net-minder Devan Dubnyk surrounding him like a cocoon in the third period. Oilers Center Colin Fraser almost falling through the door to the Kings bench late in the third period. Kings head coach Terry Murray looking to be the fastest coach to reach a 100 wins with the Kings in his 197th game.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers, Ducks Pull Out Close Wins
LA Lakers defeat Washington Wizards 115-108. You know the story. The Lakers get a nice cushy double-digit lead, their defense nonexistent, the opponent starts making their shots, the Lakers start missing theirs and the next thing you know the final two minutes become more exciting than need be.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Casually Lose to Portland
Portland Trail Blazers defeat LA Lakers 91-88. Here are the words no Lakers fans want to hear in the closing seconds of a game that is still undecided. “Pau Gasol for three
” Yet it happened. In a tie game in the closing seconds you don’t want Derek Fisher to foul Martell Webster behind the three point line as he goes to shoot. But he did. In the closing seconds you don’t want Kobe Bryant and fisher to brick three consecutive free throws...
Kings Burned by Oilers in Shootout
Despite getting a season high 55 shots on goal, the Kings’ struggles in matinee games continued as they lost their final regular season home game in a shootout to the lowly Edmonton Oilers 4-3. This was the fourth consecutive shootout game for the Kings in which they eked only one victory.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Shelled by Thunder
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat LA Lakers 91-75. This game was as lopsided as an ugly baby’s head. Coming off of a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter against the Spurs Wednesday night, the Lakers did nothing to stop the Thunder. The Thunder got anything they wanted - points in the paint and open look jumpers - while harassing the Lakers in the paint. In fact the Lakers did absolutely nothing on offense not breaking the 50-point...
LAst Night's Action: No Kobe, No Problem
LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 96-81. For three games the Lakers were without the services of Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum. And in those three games they not only won against playoff contenders, but they held their opponents to under 90 points. Against the Jazz, the Lakers looked like the aggressors at times which is very unlike a Jerry Sloan coached Jazz team. For the second consecutive game Pau Gasol was one rebound shy of a 20-20 game having scored 22 points. Lamar Odom had 25 points and 11 rebounds while Shannon Brown added 11 points as a starter and Jordan Farmar had 18 points off the bench. Now we all rest for the All Star Break. Woo hoo!
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Awaken and Beat Kings
LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 122-104. I worried about this game a couple of weeks ago, and after falling behind 12 points in the first quarter it seemed justified. But the Lakers hung up 40 in the second quarter while only allowing the Kings to score 18, and they were on their way to a rout. Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Kobe Bryant scored 22 points. Remember at the beginning of the decade when all that could heard at Arco Arena were cowbells and chants of "Beat LA"? Now they've been replaced with MVP chants to Kobe Bryant. So sad. The Lakers are now half a game behind Cleveland for the best overall record in the NBA.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Unravel Again
Charlotte Bobcats defeat LA Lakers 94-84. I was afraid of this game knowing the Laker's troubles with the Bobcats. In fact the Lakers are only 6-8 against the Bobcats. The Lakers shot an abysmal 39% on a team where no one performed well. In fact they outshot the Bobcats 97-68. The Bobcats meanwhile become only the second team to beat the Lakers twice and are within one game of a playoff spot in the East.
LAst Night's Action: The Rare Friday Version
Narbonne High School Gauchos (Harbor City) defeat Crenshaw High School Cougars 25-24. After trailing the Cougars 24-17 at half time, the Gauchos could not get anything going on offense in the second half. Fortunately their defense showed up and held the Cougars scoreless also. All hope looked lost when the Gauchos couldn't convert on a fourth down on Crenshaw's 31 yard line with six minutes left to go. Fortunately Crenshaw inexplicably went for it on a fourth-and-two play on their 39 yard line and were stopped by the Gaucho defense. The Gauchos went in for a touchdown and converted on a two-point conversion to win the game.
Kings LaBarbera Crowned NHL's Star of the Week
After stumbling out of the gate, your Los Angeles Kings have won 4 in a row, and suddenly find themselves back to .500 with a not-too embarrassing record of 6-6. A lot of credit for the recent surge goes to the solid play of goalie Jason LaBarbera. People in LA might not have noticed, but the good folks who run the NHL have, and consequently, today they named LaBarbera as the league’s #1 star...
It's Back!
While we know hockey isn't the most popular sport, LAist is thrilled. We still remember the feeling in this city when the Kings reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. The whole city was buzzing with hockey. The Kings were sold out for the whole season.
