Get Out: The Making of Chinatown & How Outsiders See Los Angeles
LAist Film Calendar 12/08-12/11: Edgar Wright's Third Fest & EPFC's Ten Years
In the world of internet film geekery, your seen-list is roughly equivalent to your penis size (the difference being that you actually use your seen-list on a regular basis). For a film geek as revered as Edgar Wright to publicly declare he hasn't seen X is a brave move on his part and a wonderful opportunity on ours, since he's made "Movies Edgar Has Never Seen" the theme of his latest Wright Stuff festival at the New Beverly!
EPFC Annex Looks for New Digs, Rummage Sale Ends Today
The Echo Park Film Center (EPFC), the non-profit media arts organization located in Echo Park, has also occupied a 2,500 square foot warehouse in Glendale called the EPFC Annex. Recently the organization was notified they must vacate the space by June 15th.
LAist Film Calendar 05/26-05/29: Outdoor Screenings All Memorial Day Weekend!
It hasn't felt much like summer lately, but there's something about Memorial Day: time to enjoy some screenings under the stars! The 2011 season of Outdoor Cinema Food Fest begins Saturday at LA State Historic Park with the Farrelly Brothers classic There's Something About Mary. The all-evening event also features a shorts program from Funny or Die, a live performance from Glen Iris & food trucks galore! Tickets are $10. BYOB - bring your own blanket.
LAist Film Calendar 03/03-03/06: Quentin Tarantino's March Madness & 'Stupid Questions' Premiere
Four years ago, Quentin Tarantino began a proud tradition of guest programming the New Beverly. Fellow film geeks have followed in his wake, including Edgar Wright (twice!), Eli Roth, Diablo Cody, Joe Dante (another two-timer) & even Peter Bogdanovich, and now the king's returned to his cinematic castle. QT's opening his private vaults for some of the grimiest, craziest, rarest exploitation to hit the silver screen - and luckily for us, they're staying open for a full month of March Madness!
LAist Film Calendar: John Lennon's Birthday at The Egyptian
Thousands of years ago, the pharaohs revered the scarab. This weekend, the Egyptian Theatre comes together to worship The Beatles. A Celluloid Celebration of John Lennon's 70th Birthday begins Thursday with the premiere of Nowhere Boy, a dramatization of Lennon's early life and the formation of Beatles proto-type The Quarrymen....
LAist Film Calendar: The Devils is Sacrilicious!
Ken Russell's The Devils is one of the most controversial films ever made. Based on the Loudun possessions of medieval France, it's a brutal critique of theocracy and power, and its own poster frankly warns the matrimony of sex, violence, and sacrilege "is not for everyone". Nearly 40 years on, The Devils has yet to be released uncut on home media. But BAFTA and the American Cinematheque bring it to the Aero this weekend to tempt fate and pay tribute to Ken Russell. The "Brave New Worlds" series also features sci-fi-devo-mind-warp Altered States, the D.H. Lawrence adaptation Women in Love, and Tchaikovsky biopic The Music Lovers. If the name Ken Russell still leaves you wondering, "Who?", then head up to Hollywood, where the Egyptian hosts Russell's film version of The Who's Tommy, paired with Lisztomania, another Roger Daltrey-starring bizarro rock opera.
LAist Film Calendar: Jackie Brown on Location in Torrance
Despite the lack of Gimps, samurai slices and Nazi scalps, Jackie Brown remains my favorite Quentin Tarantino film. I'm pleased as rum punch to share that it's playing in a free, outdoor screening Friday at sundown as part of the Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow series, presented in association with the Cinefamily. The series goes beyond the drive-in, bringing audiences to the very locations where films were shot (in this case, it's the Del Amo Mall in Torrance). If that weren't enough, QT & Co. will be on-deck, hopefully accompanied by chicks with guns. But this isn't your only chance to catch the stars under the stars this weekend! The Echo Park Film Center's Filmmobile brings writer/director Allison Anders and her girl gang drama Mi Vida Loca back to the streets of LA (follow EPFC on Twitter @EPFCfilmmobile for exact location), and the Outdoor Cinema Food Fest hauls The Hangover into Exposition Park.
Pencil This In: Film on Wheels, LA Art + Vinyl Collection Exhibit Opens, Drink at R Bar for WWF + Gulf Coast Recovery
Tonight marks the first 2010 Filmmobile Summer Screening Series, presenting The Decay of Fiction at 3333 Wilshire Blvd at Catalina at 8 pm. Brought to use by the Echo Park Film Center, the Filmmobile, an eco-friendly cinema and film school on wheels (@EPFCFilmmobile). Filmmaker Pat O'Neill will be on the bus in person to present the “haunting meditation on The Ambassador Hotel.” Free.
LAist Film Calendar: Star Treks, Space Cases & Evangelical Musicals
Weekend plans still up in the air? If 20,000 feet isn't enough elevation for you, boldly go to the Aero for screenings of JJ Abrams' Star Trek, fanboy tribute Free Enterprise, and a Trek triple: Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock & The Voyage Home. TrekMovie.com has organized panels reuniting the cast & crew of Free Enterprise, and welcomes writer/director Nicholas Meyer in-between Khan & Search for Spock. For a different warped drive, the Warner Grand has cracked-out Christmas flick Santa Claus Conquers The Martians, paired with surrealist seasonal import Santa Claus. If you'd rather stick to this planet, the Nuart has celluloid space-cases Werner Herzog & Nicolas Cage unspooling all week in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
Pencil This In: A Kubrick Retrospective, Celebrating the Chapbook
The Egyptian Theater begins a retrospective of Stanley Kubrick films tonight. On the big screen at 7:30 pm is a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Watch this morality tale on technology as supercomputer HAL attempts to eliminate the bothersome human astronaut in space. The film will be introduced by Mike Kaplan, who who was VP and marketing point person for Kubrick's US company Polaris Productions for this film an A Clockwork Orange.
Pencil This In: Cinema Speakeasy, Technicolor 'Toons
The Grammy Museum hosts bandleader and music icon Herb Alpert and singer Lani Hall tonight at 8 pm. The duo will talk about their careers, collaborative work and their new album together, Anything Goes. There will be a Q&A after the discussion, and they’ll perform a few songs. Tickets are $20; $15 for members.
Pencil This In: Short Industrial Films, Sake Tasting and Billy Bob Thornton
Pencil This In: Friday
It’s Spoken Word night at the Echo Park Film Center, where artists and writers gather to read a range of work. “Past readings have included critical theory, fiction, drama, poetry, performance, erotica, excerpts from plays, poorly written ad copy promoting consumables, letters to your math teacher and more.” On the schedule tonight are writers/performers: Kim Calder, Darick Chamberlin, Michael Chick, Doug Cordell, Peter Darchuk, Sean Dungan. Chip Godwin, Kara Hamer, Josh Lough, Ron Osborn, Dahlia Schweitzer, Alice Wood and Will Wright.
Pencil This In: Thursday
Now with John Edwards out of the picture, Hillary and Barack only have eyes and one-liners for each other. Watch them duke it out during the Democratic candidates debate tonight with friends and bloggers in the comfort of CineSpace (because really, you don’t want to be anywhere near Hollywood and Highland). RSVP at RSVP@gatherinc.com.
Weekly Movie Picks: Thrift Store Movies, Gilles Deleuze, 1970s Films
It's another crazy 1970s double feature. Directed by Frank Perry Diary Of A Mad Housewife stars Carrie Snodgress (rocker Neil Young's girlfriend for a time in the 70s) and Richard Benjamin as a young, well-to-do Manhattan couple whose marriage hits the skids thanks to obnoxious, self-absorbed hubby. The film feels dated, but Snodgress' Oscar-nominated performance still rings true.
Life is Sweet at the Echo Park Film Center
Paolo Davanzo is an enthusiastic, avuncular man whose passion for filmmaking and education has resonated for half a decade from a brick building on the corner of Sunset and Alvarado. He’s like an Eastside Willy Wonka minus the creepiness. His factory isn’t churning out chocolates, but instead for the past five years, he’s been helping people from all walks of life make cinematic confections at the Echo Park Film Center (EPFC).
