Tonight In Rock: Pearl Jam, Datarock, Paper Route, Voxhaul Broadcast

Tonight legendary Seattle-based alternative rockers Pearl Jam will be headlining a sold-out show at the Gibson Amphitheatre with none other than Claremont-bred multi-instrumentalist Ben Harper. Norwegian electro rock outfit Datarock (LAist Review, #2) are poised to take on the El Rey Theatre with English pop savant Esser in tow. And, lastly, local indie rock act Voxhaul Broadcast and LA-by-way-of-Pennsylvania indie rockers Eastern Conference Champions will be performing at the Echo in celebration of former LA Times music critic Kevin Bronson's first year blogging at Buzz Bands. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Nashville-based electro-infused indie rock quartet Paper Route.

Tonight In Rock: Green Day, The Dead Weather, Mellowdrone, Army Navy

Tonight Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand are poised to perform with Green Day at the Forum. Nashville-based alternative rock super-group the Dead Weather are poised to take LA by storm, playing at the Wiltern with none other than Tyvek. And, lastly, local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be performing at the Troubadour with the Shys and Eastern Conference Champions. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland (surprise!) to catch Highland Park-bred rock outfit Mellowdrone. LAist favorites White Arrows are slated to kick things off.

There is something immensely comforting about residencies - month-long appearances by bands at a relatively small venue. By their very nature, they imply homeliness and a familiarity that is both welcoming and calm. The shows, for example, are almost always free and the headlining band, via their month stay, has a fantastic opportunity to endear themselves to fans and staff by their very repetitive nature.

Tonight In Rock: Dwarves, Mike Stinson, Tenlons Fort, The Hectors

Tonight legendary Chicago-bred punk rockers the Dwarves will take on the Knitting Factory. LA-based indie rockers the Hectors are performing at Spaceland. On the earlier side of things, Redwood Bar & Grill will be hosting its weekly Brunch Americana with none other than Mike Stinson at the top of the bill. And, lastly, raucous PA-based rockers Eastern Conference Champions are poised to play at the Scene in Glendale. But we recommend heading over to the Hotel Café to catch Texan folk rock maestros Tenlons Fort (LAist Review, #2, #3).

Charles Thompson hasn't recorded an album with the Pixies since 1991's Trompe le Monde, despite years of rumors. But Thompson, who led the trailblazing indie quartet under the pseudonym Black Francis (originally suggested by his father), recorded roughly one album per year since the Pixies' 1993 break up as Frank Black. This summer he put a cap on Frank Black with the 32-track 93-03 compilation. And now, Black Francis is back. Touring behind the edgy,...
