Tonight Indianapolis-based indie rockers Margot & the Nuclear So & So's will be headlining the Troubadour. Hello Stranger front woman and keytar goddess Juliette Commagere (LAist Interview, Review) is poised to continue her month-long residency at the Echo. And, lastly, local psych rockers Xu Xu Fang will be performing at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the penultimate night of LA-based experimental psych duo Gangi (LAist Review). Local indie rockers LANDy, which, oddly enough, features actor Adam Goldberg, are slated to kick things off.

Tonight Chicago-based pop punk outfit Alkaline Trio will be coming through the Keyclub in Hollywood. The Hotel Café is hosting the final night of its "ho-ho-tel 2008" holiday extravaganza with singer-songwriter types like Brother Sal (LAist Review). The Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club will be throwing a Holiday Party at All Star Lanes with a handful of great local acts, including Wait.Think.Fast. In a strained effort to make up for last night's botched bill, KROQ has booked an indie-centric line-up that would sate your average music lover. Night two of Almost Acoustic Christmas will be headlined by the Cure, Death Cab For Cutie (LAist Review), Franz Ferdinand and Vampire Weekend (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4). And, lastly, Lawrence-based experimental rockers Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk will be performing at Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex for the Midnight Mission Benefit. Earlimart front man Aaron Espinoza will be joined by Rilo Kiley's Pierre De Reeder (LAist Review) for a great cause.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Tonight rappers Method Man and Redman will be performing at the House of Blues Sunset. We can only surmise that they'll be performing songs from 1999's Blackout!. Brit-rockers Travis is set to play to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour. Florida's own Copeland will be shelling out saccharine indie pop songs at the El Rey Theatre in support of 2008's You Are My Sunshine. You'll surely get your fix of falsetto. Brooklyn-based pop rockers Bishop Allen will be performing at the Echo. And, lastly, psych rock act Spindrift will be celebrating the release of their forthcoming full length, 2008's The West, with grizzly blues rock duo Restavrant at the Roxy. But we suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch Indie 103's Check One Twosday. Local indie rock songbirds Earlimart will be accompanied by Red Cortez, formerly known as the Weather Underground.

Los Angeles-based music blog Confession of a Would-Be Hipster has compiled its first compilation, appropriately entitled Plastic Snow, just in time for the holidays. The sixteen-track disc features wintry tunes by some of the best bands the local music scene has to offer, including Great Northern, Earlimart (LAist Review, #2), Princeton (LAist Interview), Pierre de Reeder (of Rilo Kiley fame), The Monolators (LAist Review), Let's Go Sailing (LAist Interview, Review) and Letting Up Despite Great Faults. And as if that impressive cast wasn't enough, 100% of the profits from Plastic Snow go to benefit Los Angeles' longest running homeless shelter, Midnight Mission. Dropping a measly ten dollars has never felt so good!

Tonight LA will be seized by festivals. Now in its third year, the LA Weekly's Detour Festival will be taking over the area around City Hall in Downtown. We're excited for Aussie electro-pop sensation Cut Copy, epic LA-based prog-rockers the Mars Volta, English folk rockers Noah and the Whale and DFA Records's latest and greatest, Hercules and Love Affair. The lineup is enticing, but certainly not for everyone. We had a rather traumatic experience last year involving Justice and drunken buffoons. It did not go over well. The 10th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, which takes place on Colorado Blvd. between Eagle Rock Blvd. and Argus St., boasts some 74 acts on 16 stages—the most comprehensive bill of local bands we've ever seen. We're excited for Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko (LAist Review), the Antarcticans, Gangi (LAist Review), and the Ship Collective's mainstay Earlimart. Need we mention that it's still free? And although it will be our festival pick of the night, we'd like to suggest a show for those who aren't interested in crowds. Head on over to Spaceland to catch Brooklyn-based folk songstress Rio en Medio. Tonight will serve as the record release party for her second full-length, Frontier. It will be the start of what promises to be a very successful career.

Friday night at The Troubadour featured long-time local favorites Earlimart and UK indie pop/rock group The Wedding Present. And, unexpectedly, Keanu Reeves, sitting up in the VIP session, rocking out to the latter. Earlimart went on right at 9 o'clock, with bright, hypnotic images projected on the wall behind them, which included forests, fields, and underwater sequences. An original Ship Collective band whose offshoots/former members include Great Northern and Silversun Pickups, Earlimart are currently back to the basics: talented founders Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray, with a touring drummer. The set included music from their two recent albums Mentor Tormentor and Hymn and Her (Majordomo in Japan), as well as from some oldies like 2004's Trebel and Tremble. Murray is fascinating in her effortless switching from a Christmas-light-strewn keyboard to a low-slung bass guitar, and her mellow vocals are the perfect accompaniment to Espinoza's higher, whispery voice. The combination of Murray's synthesized string sounds and Espinoza's hard-driving guitar are very effective; the dynamics between harder rocking songs like the infectious "Nevermind the Phone Calls" and the pretty "Happy Alone" (reminiscent of Headlights' Kill Them With Kindness) kept the show at a good pace, and is part of what keeps Earlimart interesting and continuously on the radar for indie rock fans, regardless of their lack of a label in the U.S. Steadfast good songwriting refuses to be ignored. Espinoza told the crowd, "You are the reason I live here", and bands like this are the reason many of us live in L.A. (Take that, Pitchfork and Airborne Toxic Event.) Needless to say, it was a very enjoyable set.

There certainly won't be any complaints regarding the lack of interesting shows tonight. We've got the circus-like antics of Philly's Man Man at the Echoplex, which will be appropriately paired with the epic yet disjointed work of Long Beach's Crystal Antlers. The relatively clandestine Pehrspace promises an exemplary triumvirate of Los Angeles-based indie rockers, including Marvelous Toy, Divisadero and One Trick Pony. The show will serve as an album release party for the first two bands. And it's beginning to seem like Jon Brion is always slumped over a piano at Largo. However, the big surprise of the night is the not-so-secret Spiritualized show at the Echo. Thanks to Myspace Secret Shows the concert will be free, but upon a first-come first-served basis. Those willing to brave the inordinate crowds and chaos will likely be treated to an unforgettable experience, which will presumably revolve around 2008's A&E. As much as we like Spiritualized (and standing in serpentine lines), we suggest you head over to catch Silverlake-based indie-pop maestros Castledoor at the Lyric Hyperion Theater. The band will be premiering the new music video for their leading track "Dumpster Diving," as well as affording fans a special set. Tenlons Fort, who appear to be straddling Austin and LA right now, are slated to open the night, heading directly over from their Little Radio-sponsored Park[ing] Day LA performance at 4th & Main in Downtown.
