The new Skylight Books 1814 Space about to become our new favorite haunt | Photo by Tom Andrews/LAist First Dutton's closed, then Beyond Baroque was in trouble, but then wasn't, but might be again soon. It was only last December when Village Books was having a "we might have to go out of business sale" that was sucessful enough they didn't have to close. For a town that is closing its beloved bookstores and......

Diesel, A Bookstore, one of the lesser known (but not for long) indie bookstores in Malibu has announced plans to bring indie lit to Brentwood by setting up shop in a 1,500 square foot space in Brentwood Country Mart. When Dutton's closed in late April, many in the bookish community wondered how they could possibly fill the void and get their local lit fix. Now, after a full Dutton's-less month, the announcement of Diesel's arrival......

As we lamented in February, Beyond Baroque was in danger of losing its lease and Venice was in danger of losing one of the most unique places for poets to gather and perform their work. Mere hours before their lease was to expire, L.A. City Council voted to extend the lease for 25 more years - at only $1 a year! What could be more exciting than Beyond Baroque getting a stay of execution? The......

My first memory of Dutton's is of the one in the valley, hot on those unairconditioned summer afternoons, the faintly sour smell of the paper. It was crowded, a little uncomfortable, and yet it was a place that was full of treasures. A place where a kid could wander -- completely by accident, into the Literature section and discover something magical. After my family moved to the Westside in the early nineties, Dutton's became a......

Many LAist staffers, contributors and readers were deeply troubled by the news of Dutton's closure. We all have a favorite memory of Dutton's - a particular book we discovered there, an admired author we met at a reading, a certain afternoon spent browsing. We'd like to honor the many unique memories of Dutton's that we all share with a series of posts about what Dutton's meant to us and what it meant to you. Our......

Sad, sad news in bookish LA: Dutton's Brentwood is closing its doors. After a long battle with developers and uncertainty, which we covered last year, Doug Dutton has made the difficult decision to close. He points out, though, that Charles T. Munger, the developer that has purchased the property, has "has committed to a significant amount of financial support for the difficult process of closing the store, and we appreciate his generosity." We are saddened......
