It’s no secret that the Kings have a scoring problem. Simply put they have difficulties putting the puck in the net as evidenced by being in the NHL basement in scoring goals. This scoring-itis reared its ugly head again in the Kings 2-1 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
Kings Have a Scoring Problem
Kings Are 1-0 in Darryl Sutter Era
For anyone expecting the Darryl Sutter era Kings to be radically different from the Terry Murray era right away, boy was this game against the Ducks a letdown despite the 3-2 shootout victory.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Show Class and Sass
LA Lakers defeat Houston Rockets 112-110. The Lakers schooled the rest of the league on how to celebrate a championship. The players got on the microphone and introduced one another culminating with Kobe Bryant introducing Owner Dr. Jerry Buss before the unveiling of the championship banner. The only blemish was the omission of Rasheed Hazzard (son of Walt). However there was no hype, only the requisite amount of pomp, the unveiling of the banner then the game - exactly the way it should be.
Kings Pluck Ducks in Preseason Showdown at Staples
There is no mercy rule in preseason hockey. Before the first ten minutes ticked down in the first period, the game was essentially over as the Kings scored two power-play goals within 38 seconds of each other. Although the Ducks would attempt to make it a respectable scoring two goals in the final three minutes, the Kings still imposed their will demolishing the Ducks 8-3.
Expectations in the Air for the Kings
At 46-27-9 and 101 points, the Los Angeles Kings amassed only their third 100-point season in franchise history that dates back to 1967. Despite losing to the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six games, their first appearance in the postseason in eight years sparked a lot of excitement and expectation amongst the fans, players and executives that was palpable at the Kings’ second annual Hockey Fest held at their training facility at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo on Saturday.
Dodgers Cling to Victory over Cubs
After being shut out by Cubs’ starter Ted Lilly for seven innings on May 27 at Wrigley Field in their 1-0 loss, the Dodgers went to town against him in their 9-7 win over the Cubs.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Silence Thunder
LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 111-87. Let them eat tacos! This was the Lakers’ team that everybody was expecting for the last two months. After the embarrassment on Saturday night in Oklahoma City, the Lakers made the Thunder pay in Game 5 at the Staples Center. Kobe Bryant wound up guarding...
Kings, Brown Trick Canucks
Against a team they could possibly face in the playoffs, the Kings played a spectacular game drowning the Vancouver Canucks 8-3 led by captain Dustin Brown’s hat trick.
Kings Need to Work It
From the beginning of the season, I have been adamant that the Kings will be in the playoffs. Barring a disaster of 2006 proportions the Kings will be on the road towards a Stanley Cup. However in going 3-3-1 since the Olympic break against mostly playoff contending teams, the Kings are showing that their youth and inexperience will temper expectations come late April.
Kings 4 - Bobby Ryan 3
The Kings were riding a comfy 3-0 lead late in the second period on Thursday night, and were ready to cruise to a victory, but they didn't account for Anaheim's Bobby Ryan. The rookie who began his season in the minors and was called up in November put on a clinic, scoring a hat trick (three goals) against Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick in the span of 2:21 to set a new franchise record and also tie the game.
Kings Beat Flyers 2-1 in Shootout
The Kings newest goaltender, Jonathan Quick, continued his stingy ways during his fifth NHL start by holding the Atlantic Division leading Philadelphia Flyers to just one goal on Saturday night. Scott Hartnell scored the lone tally for the Flyers three minutes into the middle period, but was matched by rookie Wayne Simmonds during a Kings' power play late in the period. The game stayed tied through overtime and resulted in a shootout.
LA Kings Win Third Straight
Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown showed how he leads his team on Tuesday night, which is by example. He did what he does best by delivering some bone-crunching checks at crucial moments that helped the Kings on their way to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars. The check of the night (and possibly the year) came midway through the second period, when he sent Stephane Robidas flying over the barrier where he disappeared into the LA Kings bench. It was a perfectly timed and executed check that will be replayed on Kings' highlight reels for the rest of the season.
Kings Defeat Canes in OT, 4-3
Michal Handzus stickhandled around a prone Carolina defender before snapping home the game-winning goal in overtime at Staples Center on Friday night to beat the Hurricanes 4-3. Handzus started the scoring with a goal in the opening minute of the game, but the 'Canes responded with three straight in the second period to put LA at a 3-1 deficit. Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar evened the score with their first respective goals of the season, leaving the door open for Handzus to do his overtime magic.
LAst Night's Action: Who Wears Short Shorts?
Celtics 110, Lakers 91 - Los Angeles ran into the buzzsaw that is Boston. Apparently, the first thing to get cut were their shorts. "I felt violated, I felt naked," remarked Kobe Bryant. There are so many places we could go with that. Actually, he was referring to the throwback short-sorts the team wore as a tribute to the rivalry and Jerry West, who was the honorary captain for the game. Maybe that's why Kobe was an abysmal 6-of-25.
Kings Dump a Couple Players, Snag a Couple Points
With the undefeated Minnesota Wild coming in hot to Staples last night, everything looked primed for the Kings to party like it was 1987 by tying that season's horrendous opening record. To make that party even more likely, the Kings activated career-backup J.S. Aubin from the injured reserve and threw his ass in goal in place of shell-shocked Jonathon Bernier. Hung out to dry nightly via awful defensive protection, Bernier was sent down to his junior squad to protect his development and confidence. Also sent packing was son-of-the-ex-coach Brady Murray, another youngster in need of more ice-time outside the NHL.
Last Night's (in)Action - Kings Edition
Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the first game in LA Kings history. Your Los Angeles Kings celebrated by losing 4-1 to the Detroit Red Wings. Though if you live in LA and are reading this, you’re probably a Detroit fan anyway. Seriously, were there any Kings fans at the game last night? The Kings loss was its fifth in a row after winning the season opener against the Ducks in London. The lone...
Staples Opener: Not So Fast, Kings Fans
If one of the NHL’s new rule changes included shortening the game from three periods to two, you would be reading a far different post right now. It would be a celebration of the Kings young guns, who scored all three goals against the St. Louis Blues. I would be praising the coming of a new savior, rookie netminder Jonathon Bernier, who played brilliantly. But alas, the game still has three periods, and last...
So, That Was a Good Win...
The David vs. Goliath analogy is made way too often in sports. But, not many people expected the Kings not to endure a bit of an ass-whomping (technical sports term) at the hands of the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.
