Will Dunkin' Donuts Finally Grace L.A.?

Will Dunkin' Donuts Finally Grace L.A.?

One doughnut eatery whose fried pastries and coffee are craved by a large portion of the western United States - Dunkin' Donuts - has failed to make an appearance in Los Angeles. But soon-ish withdrawn diners may hold a glazed, jelly-filled wonder in their shaking hands. Or a hearty, ooey gooey breakfast sammie. Or a steaming cup of coffee. more ›

Dunkin' Donuts Makes a Russian Comeback. Still None in L.A.

Dunkin' Donuts Makes a Russian Comeback. Still None in L.A.

It comes up all the time in conversation in Los Angeles, especially if you're talking with East Coast ex-pats: Why are there still no Dunkin' Donuts in Los Angeles? The international donut and coffee franchise has zero presence in California (the coffee you can buy at the grocery store doesn't count), which baffles many who swear by their sweets and caffeinated beverages. more ›

Lot 44: New Coffee Concept Opening Downtown This Spring

I hope you haven't had enough of the Great Coffee Debate that has been ROCKING the Southland ever since hip joints like LA Mill and Intelligentsia have hit the scene. (Although you all know that we prefer a cup of the working man's brew, Dunkin' Donuts coffee, over here.) A new coffeehouse, Lot 44, is set to hit downtown sometime this spring. more ›

Holiday Season Foodie Round-Up: Ramen, Latkes, and Dunkin Donuts

Holiday Season Foodie Round-Up: Ramen, Latkes, and Dunkin Donuts

Taste-Buzz will fill you with ramen cravings in this post on Asa Ramen in Gardena. Rameniac (noodle porn!) is also on the scene. More and more, it seems like the real culinary finds in this region are in the cities surrounding central L.A. Is Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck) a necessary evil for those seeking high-quality, low-impact organic food? Or is the company less interested in ethical consumption and more involved in "creating a retail... more ›

Talking Terroni

Talking Terroni

It seems every where you look in local food blogging or restaurant reviewing, the buzz word of the moment is Terroni, a Canadian import that just opened up an outpost in West Hollywood serving up affordable Southern Italian fare. Natalie Houghton of the Daily News (via LA.com) sums it up on both sides of the scale: "At its best: Prices are reasonable, sharing is not a problem here, and sampling a variety of Italian... more ›

Dunkin' Donuts, Take Me Higher

Dunkin' Donuts, Take Me Higher

It’s a beautiful, wonderful day! Why, you ask? Have they pulled the troops from Iraq? Is America’s Next Top Model going to be syndicated twice a night, every night? Has the retail industry decided that Christmas should just be about spending time with family and loved ones, and yanked their holiday marketing bonanzas? No…it’s even better. For those of you who missed it this morning…Dunkin’ Donuts coffee will now be available for purchase in... more ›

Extra Extra: Less Fire, More Donuts!

Extra Extra: Less Fire, More Donuts!

As firefighters sought to contain the smoldering remains of California, officials are keying in on how the fires started. One of the largest fires, the Santiago fire that burned 22,000 acres was, reportedly set by an arsonist. President Bush toured parts of California and declared, "We're not going to forget you in Washington D.C." I guess he didn't visit any poor children. There's at least one good story to come out of this tragedy.... more ›

This Week in the World of -Ist

We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness - we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week. more ›

Why Winchell's

Why Winchell's

Why Winchell’s when it could be someplace with some buzz, like Frittelli’s in Beverly Hills, or Donut Man in Glendora or Stan’s in Westwood? Or at least someplace with huge fake donut on it? Well, in the interest of full disclosure, I have never been to any of those places. You could even say that my donut credentials are a little weak. I’ve had Krispy Kreme, I’ve had Honey Dew, and Dunkin Donuts, I’ve... more ›

Paris Baguette. Korean, of course.

Paris Baguette. Korean, of course.

When we spotted a place called Paris Baguette on Western near 1st Street, we naturally thought French pastries. But that's because we've never been to South Korea. There, Paris Baguette is a well-known chain, about as French as french fries. Enchanted by the cross-cultural oddness, we were lured inside. We like the little boxes for your pastries, the fancy self-serve, the extra-polite staff in bakery outfits. We tried the enormous triangle toast, somewhere between sponge cake and bread with a crispy sugar shell, and the delicious thing we forgot the name of because we immediately began calling it the red bean bear claw. Judging by English-language blogs about Korea, Paris Baguette is a step above Dunkin' Donuts -- but not a big step. It certainly isn't making the best croissants in LA, but it's got the best darn red bean bear claw around. more ›
