DUI Checkpoint in the Venice/Marina Del Rey Area Tonight

As usual, the LAPD is out to get drunk drivers this weekend. Tonight, the department's West Traffic Bureau will conduct a checkpoint on Lincoln Avenue between Washington and Maxella, which straddles the border between Los Angeles city limits and the unincororated Marina Del Rey (and if you really want to get nerdy, we'd call this the Del Rey neighborhood). The checkpoint, which will run from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., is in response to 29 driving under the influence-related and 265 hit and run traffic collisions in the Pacific Division, says the LAPD. As always, you should never drive drunk in the first place. Police say if you see a drunk driver, it warrants a 911 call. more ›

DUI Checkpoints in Echo Park & Eagle Rock Tonight

It's the weekend and that means the LAPD is out in force, looking to catch drunk drivers. And as expected, there will be DUI checkpoints. In fact, there will be two tonight. From 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in Eagle Rock, a checkpoint will be set up on Eagle Rock Boulevard near Avenue 41. Over in Echo Park, a checkpoint between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. will be found on Glendale Boulevard at Effie Street. According to the LAPD, the Northeast Division has experienced 32 driving under the influence-related and 280 hit and run traffic collisions in 2010. more ›

Riverside Co. Teacher Packing Booze in Her School Bag

Middle school can be tough. For one Riverside County teacher, however, her way of coping with her 7th graders was to allegedly perform her job while intoxicated, according to cbs2. Tonya Neff, a 47-year-old teacher at Toro Canyon Middle school, has been arrested on charges she was drunk and on prescription drugs, and was carrying a container with an alcoholic beverage inside on campus. She "was taken to the Indio jail Tuesday afternoon and booked for investigation of felony child endangerment." Neff was placed on leave. Coachella Valley School District's superintendent says "there was never a threat to her seventh-grade students." more ›

Police around the region will be keeping an extra careful eye out for drunk drivers tonight and there will be at least two checkpoints. As published Tuesday, Santa Monica Police plan a checkpoint on Pico Boulevard. Additionally, the LAPD will set one up at Crescent Heights Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to West Hollywood City Councilmember Jeff Prang (interestingly enough, the LAPD did not announce tonight's location). Tonight, a sobriety and drivers license checkpoint will be found on Vermont Blvd. between Hollywood and Sunset from 8 p.m and 3 a.m. (yes, right near the Red Line subway). The LAPD Northeast Area endured 116 driving under the influence-related and 1,187 hit and run traffic collisions in 2009 alone. It's the last holiday weekend of the summer and that means more drinking and driving than usual. Last year Labor Day, 40 people died on California freeways--half of those killed were not wearing a seat belt, according to the California Highway Patrol. As mentioned last week, the LAPD tonight will hold a DUI Checkpoint in Hollywood at on Highland Avenue at Willoughby from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. After 66 driving under influence-related and 662 hit and run traffic collisions in the area just in 2009, police say they are using this checkpoint to "educate the community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive." Also, there will be a saturation patrol in the Newton Division, which covers the southern parts of downtown (Fashion District, Pueblo Del Rio, South Park-Entertainment). "These DUI saturation patrols are being deployed in response to an increase in DUI-related traffic collisions in the Newton geographic area of the Los Angeles Police Department," a police statement read. more ›

A 22-year-old Riverside man was allegedly drunk when he ran a red light hitting a sports car and killing three people, including the Angels' rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart. Andrew Thomas Gallo of Riverside will be charged with felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, according to the LA Times.
