Good Luck Bar to Celebrate its 15th Birthday

Sean MacPherson, the man behind some of L.A.'s most popular bars, announced today that his Hollywood-Los Feliz-Silver Lake neighborhood hang, the Good Luck Bar, will celebrate its 15th birthday later this month. On Thursday, November 19, DJ Travis Keller and Chinese burlesque dancers will entertain patrons as they guzzle down $5.00 Stolichnaya, Sailor Jerry, Cazadores, or Jack Daniel's cocktails and selected beers for $2.00 beers (plus: Kogi BBQ will be outside). In 1994, MacPherson took over the space, formerly a Mexican transvestite bar, and based it on his favorite Chinatown bar, Yee Mee Loo, which closed its doors after 40 years. The Abbey Voted as 'Best Gay Bar in the World'

There was no such luck for San Francisco this year, but the Abbey Food & Bar in West Hollywood beat out popular gay spots in Rio, London, Amsterdam, Chicago and Montreal this week in a contest put on by MTV's Logo Channel. Other winners in the TripOutGayTravel awards include New York City (best U.S. destination), the Wynn Las Vegas (best ultimate luxury/hotel resort) and the W Hotels (best hotel chain). Party on, WeHo.

'Ironic Hipster Bar' Stinkers to Celebrate 1 Year

Has it been a year already? The "Eastside's" most loved/hated bar, Stinkers Truck Stop, will celebrate its one-year anniversary this Sunday evening with drink specials and swag including, wait for it, air-fresheners and hats. For those who remember, an LAist post last year about the bar became quite heated in the comments section. One year later, we're curious if this place is still ironic.

It's always a little curious when you arrive at one of the many eateries participating in dineLA's popular restaurant week and they don't hand you the dineLA menu. As a diner there to check out a spot you've maybe never been to before this means things can get off to a rocky start when right out of the gate you have to wonder if you were mistaken, or if the dineLA crowd is really all that welcome where you are. (Baffling, right? After all, restaurants choose to participate, so why not pimp it?) You know that "new kid" feeling? Yeah, that's the one.

Pencil This In: Graphic Novel Art Exhibit, Tattoo Expo & Plenty of Cocktails

The Expo features Mack 10 and Warren G, and more than 200 famous artists including Big Gus, Roman Abrego, Steve Soto, Tattoo Louie, Hori-Yen, Tommy Montoya among others. There's a Best Tattoo of the Day contest each day of the show. Admission is $25, and $50 for a three-day pass.

Now that the U.S. is picking up steam in the soccer world (especially since a UCLA alumnus is the captain), this city might be getting a little more soccer crazy. Blogger, New York City transplant and soccer fan Max Lance is putting together a map of good places to catch a soccer game and is still updating it, looking for your suggestions. He's looking for places that will show soccer games with the sound on and the above map shows the places that do just that (have more? add them in the comments section below).

MyOpenBar.com Closes Tab in Los Angeles

Oof. Not only did The Onion pull their print editions out of our fair city today, so did the free and cheap drink mavens at MyOpenBar.com. In an e-mail sent out this afternoon, they announced a slow down in operations: "Looking for free booze? Oh. Yeah. About that... We had to fire the entire staff after squandering most of the Myopenbar fortune on Cadillacs and Courvosier. Call it an 'MC Hammer,' call it a damn shame, but don't call it a comeback, baby, 'cause we out of this game. Come on, you all knew the party wasn’t gonna last forever." Their New York City portal will stick around for now and they will send occasional Los Angeles blasts when they "hear about something special."

Happy Hour Deals at Wokcano

Okay, so it's not Nobu -- but who has the bank account to handle $200 sushi fests nowadays? Wokcano offers good happy hour prices in convenient locations for your after-work bitch fests -- the menu will make even the sushi-shy happy. And hey, if you don't have a job, then you can get to happy hour that much earlier! From 4-7pm, sneak in a cocktail or two and some creative rolls like The Black Pearl and the Late Night Party Roll (crabmeat, avocado, scallops, and lobster). Yeah, maybe you sushi purists should show yourselves the door, but who's going to argue with lychee martinis and Asian bloody Marys? Not this girl.

What better way for a Los Angeles bar to celebrate our city than with astrology cocktails? Yup, X Bar in Century City, has perhaps the funnest theme cocktail menu idea we've seen in a long time. They have created 12 cocktails ($12 each) to represent the zodiac signs and will only serve each sign's cocktail during the dates of that particular sign. Not clear? Well, right now since we're in Pisces, so you can try the Pisces cocktail through March 21, followed up by the Aries cocktail.

The 2-Armed Blanket, Booze, & You: It's the Snuggie Pub Crawl

"Blankets are okay, but they slip and slide, and when you need to reach for something, your hands are trapped inside," laments the TV commercial for the Snuggie--the blanket that comes with two arms. Never has "lying on the couch" been made so convenient as it has since the product's arrival on the market. And just when you thought you and your new best friend were relegated to the confines of your own home, an event slated to take place soon in Los Angeles can bring Snuggie-wearing booze-enthusiasts together, out in public.

One way to get people chatting about your new restaurant is to bring in the bloggers, which is just what Downtown's CASA did recently. The eatery served signature cocktails and a sampling of their menu, which was inspired by an old family recipe book, to an eager crowd of self-proclaimed foodies. We mingled with the owners and watched Chef Kris Morningstar in action--alas we learned a few days later Morningstar is moving on soon, as planned, to embark on another food adventure. He's got a project set for Hollywood, and we will keep our eyes--and tastebuds--on alert.

When I first checked out Ivan Kane's Café Wa s in Hollywood last year, I couldn't help but think that the only thing missing from this beautiful Bohemian restaurant was a specialty cocktail list. Amazingly it didn't have one. Sure it has a full bar, an upstairs absinthe bar and a couple of absinthe cocktails but no list of special drinks to speak of.

Looking for a little holiday cheer in the frantic last days of frenzied mall crowds, last-minute shopping and party hopping? Well, today is your lucky day. Christmas in a cocktail glass at the following bars and even a little recipe to try at your holiday party!

With much excitement, the six-week late-night Metro Red Line subway service begins tomorrow. Every Friday and Saturday night until the end of the year, you'll be able to ride the train until 3 a.m.

  • Metromix LA also has a long list of places to get your vote party on, including a $3 beer night at Barney's Beanery, a mixer at Cinespace, and politically-themed cocktails and appetizers at Hollywood Billiards.

  • There's a relatively new local blog on the scene called Blazing Shark. Albeit a bit, ohhhh, NSFW (in words, not photos), it's all about the red headed Westsider's sexually adventurous life (she even flirts on Twitter). Her most recent post reminisces on some successful celebrity stalking earlier this year.

Neccessity is the mother of invention. Camping in Mexico is a great time to discover that the only thing left in the cooler - mango nectar, is delicious with tequila.

For the past seven years, Good Microbrew & Grill on Sunset Blvd. has made their own beer garden during the Sunset Junction Street Festival. And even though that this year if you go south of Sanborn St. there is no festival (yet the street is still closed off and you still have to pay to get in), the beer garden goes on.

Malo has created a special drink for this weekend's festival called the Sunset Junction Margarita ($8). Made out of El Jimador, Cointreau, a simple syrup and lime juice, it's got a quite a nice spritzy and refreshing kick to it and soothes your quench for thirst (and alcohol) easily. Additionaly, they have some very good specialty cocktails).

One of Los Angeles' hidden gems in an industrial part of downtown is the San Antonio Winery, who has been around for some 91 years.

Ever since we first heard of it we've been dying to try out the Root Beer Float Martini ($10) at Kitchen 24 in the Cahuenga Corridor in Hollywood. Is it a cocktail or is it dessert?

Saturday may have been the official National Rum Day, but who says we can't celebrate whenever the hell we want (and who gets to make up these national days? Do these people get paid? How do I get that job?)?

This coming Sunday, treat yourself to a body bronzing by Sunset Tan, a mani by OPI, a massage by El Leon Spa and perhaps a makeover by Artform Studio. That's just a few of the beauty treatment options you have at this coming Sunday's Pamper Me Fabulous event held in Downtown's Ford Brady Loft. Plus enjoy free-flowing champagne, food by Ciudad and sweets galore. Every guest also gets to take home a swag bag with about $300 worth of goodies! It's $165 a ticket but if you enter "discountla" as the discount code (tickets must be purchased in advance) you'll receive $30 off your ticket. 10% of ticket proceeds will go to nonprofit Step Up Women's Network. Ford Brady, 718-720 North Figueroa St., Downtown (map).

We think we found our new favorite Manhattan cocktail: It's the Blood Orange Bitters Manhattan at the new Culver City restaurant/bar, Rush Street. Most versions of this drinking man's cocktail come on kick-ass strong but here at one of the busiest bar in the heart of Screenland, this one is tempered with the blood orange bitters making it lighter and dangerously drinkable.

Friday night's grand opening party for the highly anticipated Rush Street in Culver City was an evening of fun food and drinks; inside the incredible space on Washington Boulevard were gathered friends of the restaurant, folks from the neighborhood, local dignitaries, and a handful of LAisters, all eager to get a taste of the new bar and eatery.

A good hangout can be hard to find, so for anyone who finds themselves looking for nightlife in Long Beach, LAist's Photo contributor Michael Zampelli (aka rink_rat on Flickr) suggests The Pike Bar & Fish Grill. He tells us: "The Pike Bar in Long Beach is owned by the original drummer of Social Distortion and you can feel the vibe from the minute you cross the welcome mat with the Social D. skeleton logo and hear the first blast of punk rock from the jukebox. There is free live music nearly every night and the real surprise is the kitchen, which churns out gourmet quality food from mushroom tacos to authentic pasta to the crispiest and most delicate beer-battered fish you've ever tasted." (Check out the menu here.)

It stands to reason that sometimes a good Happy Hour is hard to find in this town. But give us one that combines drink bargains with sushi and you've got our attention. If you're either coming or going on (Big) Santa Monica between the beach and WeHo or those general environs after a hard day's work, Century City's KULA Sushi Bistro's Happy Hour would make a worthy stopping point. Between 5-7 Monday-Friday evenings, the restaurant has discounted drink specials and half-price high-quality sushi at the bar in a comfortable and unpretentious environment.

Last week's contest for tonight's Rilo Kiley concert at the Greek Theatre was all about what to do in Los Feliz before and after the show (related, we're running a Robert Plant/Allison Krauss contest right now). Many readers responded with food suggestions. So here, we present to you, by you, your quick guide to eating in Los Feliz:

Now that it stays light until almost nine o'clock, nighttime has taken up its annual habit of being more playful, with balmy temperatures and the hint of summertime. But weekday doldrums can still take over, which means weeknight relaxation and indulgences are a must-have. Here's where the beautiful and historic Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa comes in. From now until August 27, every Tuesday and Wednesday night from 4-8 they're having a poolside summertime special, starring you, your fingertips, and your thirst. It's Martinis & Manicures... and, ladies (and gents!) it's lovely!

For those of us who would prefer to have cheap drinks at a happier hour than early evening, The Mint has the answer: Midnight Happy Hour. Finlandia drinks are only a $1.
