To celebrate the life and music of Richie Hass, a local musician who passed away in March from Myeloma, his friends have organized a marathon benefit concert tomorrow at the Echoplex. Many of the bands Richie once played with will be performing, and include some of the best punk, jazz, and experimental bands in LA.

LAFD responded to a fire in the 3200 block of Dos Palos Drive in Studio City Sunday morning. The blaze was confined to the patio of the residence but upon entering the home, firefighters saw what appeared to be weed. LAPD followed up and confiscated 382 marijuana plants -- approx. 48 pounds -- growing in the garage. 37-year-old Eric Porter of Studio City was later arrested and booked on suspicion of felony cultivation of marijuana,...
A rare closeup of the bass as we continue with the Red Thing series. It is always attached to the things he loves best: The Boat, the bike, and the bass. I like how the red on the side of the bass head continues the red theme, and how the tuning pegs look humongous. There is not much else to say about the Red Thing. The Red Thing simply IS.
Last night garage-punk rockers the Hives got to show off their new stuff for the LA crowd at the Avalon. Armed with new material from their new CD The Black & White Album, the Hives broke down the walls and rocked the hell out of the crowd. Dressed in their typical 50's style getups, the band enters the stage without any opening acts. Resembling more of a Southern Baptist preacher than a rock star,...

China Forbes is the ultra-fabulous frontlady of Pink Martini, a 12 piece “little orchestra” based in Portland, Oregon. Pink Martini is the kind of band that serves up a little sumthin for everyone – their multi-lingual repertoire ranges from lounge to Latin, classical to cosmopolitan and they’re huge stars in France. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 14, 15 & 16) the band hits the stage at the Hollywood Bowl accompanied by our very...
Oh Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan Gold! Where will you eat this week? Why, Hacienda Heights, my dear foodies: at Earthen, a wildly popular new Chinese deli in - what else - a strip mall. I'll take an order of potstickers, please. Top Chef Recap: Lordy, lordy, what an upset! The underdog quartet of Howie, Hung, Sara, and Dale captured the win in Restaurant Wars, cleaning up their menu and sporting a new name: Quatre. Tre...

In the swashbuckling 1940 Zorro movie, called The Mark of Zorro, the handsome Tyrone Power plays the hero; he was so impressive, even the actor playing his nemesis swooned. Basil Rathbone said, "Power was the most agile man with a sword I’ve ever faced before a camera. Tyrone could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat." We've never seen Power's Zorro, and now we think we really should. On the big screen.
The fifth day of the fifth month means celebration time for anyone with ties to Mexico, or an affinity for international holidays that involve hard liquor and good food. Here in LA, Cinco de Mayo is a hugely popular Fiesta time, and with the holiday landing on a Thursday, there's sure to be celebrations running through the weekend. In honor of 05/05/05, LAist would like to mention 5 great Mexican restaurants where you can get the eating portion of your party on. And, like we have been doing for the past couple of weeks, we ask you to holler out an "Ole!" on behalf of your own favorite. (Just don't dare mention Studio City's Mexicali; we hate that place with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.) In any event: Happy Cinco de Mayo!
