On Saturday, Los Angeles-based pet products company Dogswell was one of the sponsors behind the Homeward Hound Hike, a benefit event held in Griffith Park to raise money for Friends of Animals. The organization is a no-kill dog and cat shelter that has been around since 1983. They are a volunteer-only group who rely on private donations for support, and who focus on helping as many animals as they possibly can. At the event were dog enthusiasts and hikers, as well as their furry four-legged friends, including several available for adoption. Although you may have missed out on the hike, you can still help Friends of the Animals; make a donation online via Dogswell or contact Friends of the Animals.

Insult to Injury? 'Hyperactive dog' Blamed for 'total loss' House Fire

The Station Fire had its way with La Cañada-Flintridge just last week, but fires still happen when people are careless. Actually, in the case of a house fire yesterday in the area, it wasn't a human who made the flub, it was the dog. A "hyperactive dog" knocked over a candle, which set the furniture ablaze, followed by the entire house, reports the Pasadena Star-News. The house is considered a "total loss," and "damage to the home on the 1000 block of Lavender Drive is estimated at $575,000." The two adults and one child managed to escape the house once the flames grew; no word on what became--or will become--of the family's pyromaniac pooch.

Last month, a story floated around about a dog named Hoagie that saved his owners from a mountain lion in the Cleveland National Forest in Orange County. But soon after, state officials found that the mountain probably lion did not initiate the attack.

Some heavy fist beating and a 12-pound rock hurt the six-month German Shepherd mix so badly last month, the owner had to bring the dog to a veterinarian where the she was euthanized. LA County assistant fire chief Glynn Johnson, 54, was helping bring the runaway dog back to the owner, his neighbor in Woodcrest, when the dog clenched onto his thumb. Johnson, who was charged last week with felony animal cruelty and other counts, said his only choice was to hit the dog in self-defense, his lawyer said in court today. They also said the media and animal activists unfairly characterized the incident as an attack on an unprovoked puppy. Half a year old or not, the lawyer said the dog was big enough to do damage.

Vice President-Elect Joe Biden has a new puppy.

The LAPD's Animal Cruelty Task Force--a group formed three years ago--announced today a successful break up of a profitable dog fighting ring in South LA. Since February 2007, detectives have looked into the location on the 600 block of West 85th Street where they say they found "mistreated dogs living in horrendous conditions at the residence" along with "equipment used in the training, breeding and exercising of the animals." 17 dogs in all were rescued and two men have already been arrested, tried and convicted.

A six-month-old German shepherd mix allegedly bit a neighbor's thumb as he tried to bring the puppy back to its owner after it escaped into a Woodcrest neighborhood street. Glynn Johnson said the dog, Karley, wouldn't let go and said he did whatever he had to do to protect himself.

One of those pesky quality of life complaints we hear a lot about are people who don't clean up after their dog. And trying to get the city to enforce a repeat violator is pretty hard too. You've got to catch the person in the act on film or photo, follow them to their home address or somehow obtain where they live, write a letter to the Department of Animal Services with the evidence and where this person lives. Then the city will send a letter telling that person you can't do that. If they continue, grab that camera for round two.

Three times a week, Kim Sill goes out into public and stands up for what she believes in. On Tuesdays and Sundays, she and a group of animal lovers protest outside Pets of Bel Air. On Saturdays, it's off to Malibu to protest Pet Headquarters. Even though Sill and her fellow protesters are peaceful, police are still called at least once a week by customers or shop owners, she says.

That was fast. I guess this proves that billboards and a massive, massive, massive amount of flyers put around the neighborhood can get your dog back. For background on Hedkayce (that's the dog's name), check out yesterday's story.

Update: Hedkayce, the dog, has been found.

The Silver Lake and Echo Park area was slammed with flyers this weekend showing this dog, pictured above. And if flyers were not enough, two billboards, back-to-back, at Sunset and Alvarado featured the cute dog asking anyone who has seen it or has found it to contact the owner.

As temperatures easily reach over 100 in some parts of the region, it is affecting those who are vulnerable. An 90-year-old woman driving in San Bernardino County died when she stepped out of her car to search for her husband who left the car for unknown reasons. They were found 50 yards from their car and the 116 degree heat killed Virgil Sanders and the husband had 2nd and 3rd degree sunburns.

In Lancaster last night, a six month old dog was lit on fire. Luckily, witnesses heard the yelping puppy and extinguished the fire with a jacket. The dog, a pit bull mix, was taken to an animal shelter while police investigated looking for the culprit. More odd news came out of Lancaster earlier this year when a man was killed by an arrow while crossing the street.

  • LAist has all the info you need to get a handle on your May Day, from transit troublespots to protest participation potential. But The Sausage Factory clues us in to another special celebration tomorrow: "Councilman Ed Reyes and Police Chief Bill Bratton are participating in a 'Tamales for Peace' event with organizers of tomorrow's May Day parade as all parties involved pledge there will not be a repeat of last year's clash with police." No word if actual tamales will be involved.

  • In National Treasure: Book of Secrets when Nicholas Cage and his buddy break into a house, it was mentioned that the best security system was a dog. That turned out to be spot on when a mountain lion popped into a San Juan Capistrano home to say, "hello, dear.".

Authorities said the young cougar wandered into a San Juan Capistrano home Monday. Homeowner Jo Ann Merrell said she was watering her plants when she saw the animal 25 feet away from her. She said her pet Sheltie, Cody, barked and chased the mountain lion into the bushes and up a tree.

Living in Los Angeles with my dog Skeela has made me keenly aware of shit. Every day I wrap my hand in some sort of petro-chemical barrier, scoop up whatever solid matter has fallen out of my canine, tie a knot in a hand-to-shit barrier bag to seal off the stench, and then proceed to dispose of it cleanly in the nearest appropriate receptacle. My dog eats a well-balanced diet with plenty of whole...

One of the great benefits of Los Angeles weather to man and beast is the year round use of Dog parks. As a playground for hounds and a social gathering hot spot for owners, dog parks provide an enjoyable, mostly incident free outing at any given time of day. When one neighbor gets lazy, another gets pissed... and a little creative (we love the double-meaning). This picture was taken fifteen feet away from the infamous Rye St. pedestrian bridge in Sherman Oaks, making this not the first time the small cul-de-sac has had to fight for their rights by taking things into their own hands. After the jump, AsianImage (YouTube Handle) shows the all too often irony of "Curb Your Dog" signs....
