If you came to Los Angeles and had to choose one late-night diner, which would you go to? Playboy traveled the country in search of the top ten best such diners across the country, naming the Original Pantry Cafe in downtown as one of them (good choice!). What they say, in part: "Open all day, every day since 1924, former Mayor Richard Riordan loved the Pantry so much that he bought the diner in order to save it from demolition. Today the Pantry is dwarfed by the shadows of the Staples Center and other markers of downtown Los Angeles, but it serves up to 3,000 people every day...” Also listed: Orphan Andy’s (SF), Big Nick’s (NYC) and Diner Grill (Chi).

       

It took two words to get me to try Downtown's Nickel Diner for breakfast: Bacon Donut.

For a long time it seemed like Bob's Big Boy was going, going, and almost gone. But the end of an era has been halted, thanks to the new owner of the site of the old Johnie's Broiler in Downey, who is set to build a new Big Boy based on old designs.

Very few places can claim bragging rights over their onion rings. One place that can is Du-pars, the long-lasting 24-hour Los Angeles diner and bakery that has three locations in the region (Farmer's Market on Fairfax, Studio City and Thousand Oaks).

Just before 5 o'clock this morning, two gunmen, "described as white men wearing masks" held up the stalwart 24-hour eatery Norm's at 470 La Cienega Blvd.

Breakfast! Whether you're gobbling it down in the wee hours to fend off the inevitable hangover, gathered around the late-morning table with good friends or family, or sitting solo with a good book and going the leisurely route, weekend breakfast can be a beautiful thing. (And you know LAist loves breakfast...we spent a whole month talking about it!) This is the French Toast Special from Rae's Diner at Pico & Yorkshire in Santa Monica, and it's a fave of LAist Featured Photos pool contributer pink_fish13, who wisely dubs this plate as being "good, not good for you." The mark of a fine breakfast, indeed!

Bloomingdale's diner is the perfect spot for ladies who lunch. 59th & Lex appears upon first glance to be only a glorified coffee bar for a quick break from the 40% off sale. This little diner is actually so much more than your typical department store lunch counter. The sandwiches and salads are delicious and the service is sheer perfection. These ladies would expect nothing less. Named after the corner on which the original Bloomingdales stands, the name 59th & Lex has been known to confuse friends from New York. The primary fare is just what you would expect for the properly manicured - light lunches and sinfully rich desserts. Just because you're watching your waistline, it doesn't mean you can't splurge once in awhile right? After all, it is a special occasion. It's always a special occasion when you just got your hair done.

"hey, i wanna check out this new place daily candy wrote about today. the waffle. i checked out their menu and it sounds cool and they're open til 4am on fri/sat nites." My friend Shelley IM'd me this last week. I gave their menu a look-see, Googled them and found that not only Daily Candy wrote about them but LAist, LA Times' The Guide and Eater LA. "I can't believe I found out about something b4 u!" she wrote smugly. "oh whatev. I find out about things from my friends," I replied defensively.
