Tonight In Rock: Nightmares On Wax, DeVotchKa, Local Natives, Nite Jewel

Tonight legendary Leeds-based DJ Nightmares On Wax will be headlining the Echoplex. Denver's own gypsy rockers DeVotchKa are poised to play to a sold-out crowd at the Viper Room. LAist favorites Whispertown 2000 (LAist Interview, Review, #2) will be coming through Spaceland with Le Switch. Local instrumentalist Bobb Bruno is set to rock at the Echo. And, lastly, experimental electronic outfit Gang Gang Dance will be performing at the Smell in Downtown with LA-based Italo-disco act Nite Jewel. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Silver Lake Lounge to catch the opening night of Local Natives' month-long residency. The Outline, Lemon Sun and Aushua are slated to kick off the show.

Since you'll probably be at the Wiltern tomorrow night catching Vampire Weekend, you might not feel compelled to catch Airborne Toxic Event's largest gig on their home turf thus far. The Smell in Downtown boasts a stellar, albeit relatively noisy, psych-infused lineup of San Francisco natives. But if you're not too keen on the idea of the dingy locale, then we suggest you head on over to the swanky confines of Tangier in Los Feliz for some low-key indie rock. The night kicks off early (8:30 p.m.) with a solo set from Angela Correa of Correatown, followed by the excessively sweet pop antics of Franklin for Short and, finally, Marcus Very Ordinary.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, music festivals are the dim sum of the concert-going experience; try a little of everything and go back for more of what you like (or ditch out on what you don’t). This year’s Coachella was no exception, with acts like country crooner Dwight Yoakam vying for time against dance-rock lovelies Hot Chip, or Prince breaking down the funk for the masses after a particularly breathtaking Portishead set. With the desert heat not as heart-stopping as previous years and the lineup eclectic as it was educational, Coachella brought out all ages and backgrounds of super fans and the uninitiated alike. People-watching was good but people-listening was at an all time high, so I took advantage of all the close quarters on Saturday to do a little eavesdropping.

With indie rock mainstays Devotchka, Oh No! Oh My!, Foreign Born, Snowden, Illinois, The Black Angels, St. Vincent, and Thee More Shallows, how can one really go wrong? Well, quite simply by not publicizing your festival enough. My experience swerving was a little disconcerting, mainly because of the poor turnout. It's my turn to take a stab at this whole Swerve Festival. Everything seemed perfect on paper (the music, the art, the film, and the...

Last Labor Day weekend I desperately needed to escape the disagreeable, torturous heatwave. So I made a last minute decision to fly to Seattle and bumbershoot. As luck would have it, my spontaneity provided for a much more temperate and rainless 70 degree haven. The Bumbershoot Festival has been running 37 years strong and every year it seems to progress into a bigger and better animal. Situated within the spacious Seattle Center amidst the...
