It would have been nice to be able to discuss what a great pitching duel it was with Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander four outs away from a no-hitter. Unfortunately the actions of a few detracted from it all.
LAst Night's Action: Prom Queens Galore Between Angels and Tigers
Dodgers' Matt Kemp Makes an Argument for MVP
Dodgers’ centerfielder Matt Kemp continues to make his argument for being the National League Most Valuable Player. Coming into the game leading the National League in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) at 6.3, Kemp was responsible for the Dodgers’ first five runs as they pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5.
LAst Night's Action: At Least Chivas USA Won
New York Mets defeat LA Dodgers 5-3. If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all. To quote manager Don Mattingly after the game, “We have to keep going, and we have to play in a way that tells ourselves that we are going somewhere. That’s what we have to do.” The Dodgers are 9-18 in their last 27 games dating exactly one month.
Same Story, Different Night for the Dodgers
Here’s the rundown of the Dodgers’ 6-0 loss to the New York Mets: Ted Lilly gives up homers; Dodgers offense muster nothing; Dodgers lose. “That’s been our story,” Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly acknowledged particularly when it came to offense. Although this story is categorized as “news”, this is nothing new for the team and anyone who has followed the team this season.
Dodgers Appearance Deceiving, Lose to Mets 5-2
With the Dodgers, appearances can be deceiving. Despite being sixth in the National League in batting average, they couldn’t string together enough hits as they fell to the New York Mets 5-2.
Exhibit A: The two runs they scored against New York Mets’ starter Chris Capuano (W, 8-7), one each in the second and fourth innings on James Loney RBI singles, looked to be enough for a Dodger win. Dodgers’ starter Rubby De La Rosa (L, 3-4) was pitching a no-hitter through five innings confounding the Mets’ hitters.
Tigers Overpower Dodgers To Prevent Sweep
Bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, two outs. The game is quickly avalanching towards the four-hour mark with the Detroit Tigers leading the Dodgers 7-5. Dioner Navarro up to bat against Tigers’ closer Jose Valverde. Valverde, who hadn’t pitched since June 16, was laboring giving up singles to Andre Ethier and James Loney and a walk to Matt Kemp.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Tame Tigers
LA Dodgers defeat Detroit Tigers 6-1. In what is an infrequent showing, the Dodgers looked like a good baseball team for one night. Fuelled by Andre Ethier’s two-run homer in the fifth inning, the Dodgers bled the Tigers slowly.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Get One in Detriot
LA Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 4-2. The Angels won a game! Jered Weaver (W, 11-7) tossed seven innings of two-run ball to get the Angels back into the left side of the ledger. Torii Hunter with a two-run homer in the first inning and another two-spot in the second inning off of Justin Verlander (L, 12-7) gave Weaver all the run support he needed. Hunter and manager Mike Scioscia were ejected in the eighth inning for arguing a third-strike call at the knees by home plate umpire Ron Kulpa. Hunter got really heated, came too close to Kulpa and might be subject to an additional suspension. Brian Fuentes (S, 21) after walking leadoff hitter Jhonny Peralta in the ninth retired the side for the save.
Dodgers Lose to Tigers and First Place in NL West
The magic of Lima Time could not propel the Dodgers this somber Sunday afternoon. With the centerfield flags flying half-mast in remembrance of Jose Lima, the Dodgers were frustrated by Tigers’ pitching losing 6-2.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Reach First
LA Dodgers defeat Detroit Tigers 4-1. Tigers' starter Dontrelle Willis' two wild pitches and a hit batter was ultimately his demise as the Dodgers scored once in the fourth and three in the fifth off of him for their victory and a share of the NL West lead with the San Diego Padres.
How The Dodgers Reached First Place
While Detroit Tigers’ slugging first baseman Miguel Cabrera marveled at Dodger Stadium, his teammate Dontrelle Willis would have to object. Dodger Stadium has been a house of horrors for the starting pitcher throughout his career. While with the Florida Marlins he made three starts in Los Angeles to come away with a 0-2 record and a 5.30 ERA and a 1.607 WHIP. The passage of time and a change of leagues did nothing change his fortunes as the Dodgers beat up on him and the Detroit Tigers 4-1 in his first start at Dodger Stadium since July 6, 2007.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Claw Against Jazz
LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 104-99. In Game 1 of the first round, the Lakers got out to a big lead in the first quarter then coasted to a victory over the Thunder. In Game 1 of this series, the Lakers got out to a big lead in the first quarter, but had to fight and scrape their way to victor. The Lakers had an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the bench would blow the lead. The starters came in with 7:32 left and the Jazz continued...
LAst Night's Action: Angels Blow One in Detroit
Detroit Tigers defeat LA Angels 3-2. Scott Kazmir started out shaky getting the bases loaded with one out in the first inning. However he held it together allowing only one run to score. The Angels tied things up in a strange fourth inning. Howie Kendrick hit a one-out single off of Jeremy Bonderman and advanced to second on a missed catch error by first baseman Miguel Cabrera on a pickoff attempt during Bobby Abreu’s at-bat. Abreu then hit a fly ball that while tailing away from right fielder Ryan Raburn slightly went in and out of his glove allowing Kendrick to advance only to third base. Raburn threw the ball to Cabrera who once again could not catch the ball allowing it to dribble back to the pitching mound. Kendrick went through third base coach Dino Ebel’s stop sign and scored to tie the game. The three errors in the one at-bat vaulted the Tigers past the Dodgers, Braves and Marlins to the top of the blooper-prone list in the Majors. The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of ninth when with one out and Scot Shields pitching for the Angels, Johnny Damon took a fastball to right field walking off with the game.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Thunder On to the Second Round
LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 95-94. With five minutes left in the game the Lakers held a 91-84 lead. In a matter of two minutes they pissed away the lead and then some. With 2:11 remaining Kobe Bryant hit a jumper to bring the Lakers to within 94-93. And for the next two minutes both teams traded jumpers and bad shots seemingly not wanting to win the game. After Russell Westbrook missed a jumper with 19 seconds left in the game, Kobe Bryant got the rebound and dribbled down the court as everyone in the...
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Power Past Reds
LA Dodgers defeat Cincinnati Reds 14-6. While Hiroki Kuroda has arguably been the Dodgers’ best starter early in the season, he wasn’t quite so sharp in his third start of the season. Fortunately the Dodgers offense continued to go on overdrive making up for the six runs Kuroda gave up. Rafael Furcal went 3-for-5 going a homer short of the cycle, while both Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp homered. The Dodgers scored at least one run in every inning except for the fourth inning when they were retired in order. Surprisingly enough the Dodgers bullpen pitched 3 1/3 innings without giving up a run - the two runs that scored when George Sherrill gave up the single to Orlando Cabrera were charged to Kuroda. The Dodgers defense was also shaky with two errors which gave the Reds three unearned runs.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Squeak By Thunder for Game 2 Victory
LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 95-92. In Game 1, the Lakers had a first quarter lead to help buffer the swoon. The Lakers had no such luxury in Game 2 playing a back and forth affair that thanks to a Jeff Green missed three pointer...
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Power Rox Back To Three
LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 6-1. Andre Ethier hit two homers and James Loney hit a three-run tater to power the Dodgers over the Rockies. Ethier hit a homer in the first inning after Matt Kemp walked and hit a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. After Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch and Casey Blake walked Loney hit his shot in the same inning. At that point the Dodgers had only three hits, the three homers. While it's easy to get very excited about this power surge, keep in mind the Rockies were forced to start Josh Fogg who has been a reliever all season. This gives the Dodgers a three game lead over the Rockies again.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Enter Danger Zone
Colorado Rockies defeat LA Dodgers 5-4 (10). On June 3, the Rockies trailed the Dodgers by 15 1/2 games. With their victory over the Dodgers Tuesday night that deficit has shrunk to two games. The Dodgers led off the first inning with Andre Ethier doubling in Matt Kemp taking a 1-0 lead. Casey Blake would extend the lead to two with a solo shot in the fourth. But the Rockies would come back in home half of the fourth when with Todd Helton on second Brad Hawpe hit a homer to center field. They would add a run in the seventh and eighth inning for a 4-2 lead going into the top of the ninth. With closer Huston Street unavailable to pitch for the Rockies, manager Jim Tracy instead went with Rafael Betancourt, Joe Beimel and Matt Daley in the ninth inning resulting the Dodgers tying the game 4-4. Thanks to a James Loney throwing error in the bottom of the 10th the Rockies loaded the bases on James McDonald. Troy Tulowitski would bloop a single to bring in the winning run.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Lose Game Three
Utah Jazz defeat LA Lakers 88-86. Everyone knew it was going to be ugly, and boy was it. The Lakers couldn't score in the first quarter, and Carlos Boozer just ate up rebounds. In fact Boozer tied a franchise playoff record getting 22 rebounds. Trailing by as many as 10 in the first quarter the Lakers came back to trail by only four at the half. But the third quarter was all Lakers as they came back and led by as many as 13. But the Jazz started to chip away trading the lead with the Lakers in the final minutes. The Lakers would tie the game leaving 11 seconds on the clock which would give Deron Williams plenty of time to make the winning jumper with two seconds. Andrew Bynum who came into the game complaining about pain in his knee would foul out in the third quarter scoring only four points in seven minutes. Kobe Bryant started out ice cold but would eventually score 18 points while Lamar Odom was a monster posting a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. I expected the Lakers to lose this game, but they will rebound on Saturday to win game four.
LAst Night's Action: The Road Still Haunts Dodgers
Houston Astros defeat LA Dodgers 6-5. Randy Wolf and Roy Oswalt went tit for tat both giving up four runs in their outings. The big play of the game was Manny Ramirez's booming homer in the top of the sixth inning that literally went out of the park over left field. Ronald Belisario pitched the eighth inning for the Dodgers hoping to cling onto a 5-4 lead. But a homer to Lance Berkman and an RBI single to Ivan Rodriguez after Hunter Pence got on board with a ground-rule double and an intentional walk to Geoff Blum was all she wrote. While it's a little troubling that the Dodgers have problems winning on the road, it's hardly time to sound the warning horns.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Power Past Tigers
LA Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 7-1. In this edition of Breakfast with the Angels, the Angels bats pounded the Tigers into submission. They drove Tiger's starter Kenny Rogers out of the game in the third inning after pitching to four Angels hitters and getting none of them out. He gave up six runs on eight hits in those two-plus innings and looked nothing like the dominant pitcher we know him to be. Angel's starter Ervin Santana meanwhile gave up only one run on a solo shot in the eighth inning. He would pitch 7 1/3 innings giving up that lone run and six hits while striking out eight. I think someone is ready for the postseason.
LAst Night's Action: Streaking Dodgers Sweep Padres
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-4. The Dodgers sweep the Padres and are on a five game winning streak heading into a weekend showdown against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nothing was more jaw-dropping than witnessing Angel Berroa hit his first homer since the bronze age. Starter Hiroki Kuroda wasn't quite so dominant as he had been at home giving up four runs on ten hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. But the Dodgers capitalized on first-time starter Wade LeBlanc in his four innings of work that had him all over the plate except for the strike zone and a breaking ball that seemed to hang over the plate.
LAst Night's Action: I'm an Asshole
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 8-4. Well the Dodgers figured out how to get hot down the stretch: keep Jeff Kent away. Since he left the clubhouse, the Dodgers have won every game handily. Listening to the game while stuck at work, the description of Clayton Kershaw's pitches did him no justice. Those pitches were outright filthy. Meanwhile the offense exploited all of the Padre's weaknesses. Andre Ethier was a double short of the cycle, and Manny Ramirez drove in three runs in the first three innings while getting his 30th home run of the season. This Jeckell-Hyde personality of the team has turned my feelings toward them Jeckell-Hyde.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Offense Smells Like New Jersey
Chicago Cubs defeats LA Dodgers 2-1 (10 innings). I don't want to hear excuses about players being injured. Aside from Rafael Furcal, the only major injuries to the lineup has been to two unproductive players: Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent. And what more does Derek Lowe have to do to get a win? He only went seven innings pitching a four-hit shutout only to have Takashi Saito blow the save in the ninth inning. In the sweep by the Cubs the Dodgers scored exactly one run in each game. Even the Giants and Padres are more productive than this.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers on the Cusp of the Western Conference
LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 93-91. The Lakers started out strong posting a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. Though the Spurs would come back and tie the game many times, they just couldn't get over the hump. Manu Ginobli would be held to 2-8 shooting with seven points while Brent Barry had a career playoff high 23 points. Even with a career playoff day, Barry could not sell a foul by Derek Fisher beyond the arc at the end of the game to put the Spurs in the lead for the first time. Instead the Spurs are now down three games to one facing elimination at the Staples Center Thursday night.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Continue to Roll
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 102-84. The thin air seemingly inconsequential, the Lakers continued to pound the Nuggets to ultimate self destruction. The Nuggets decided to be more defensive which seemed laughable at points, but their offense just couldn't get going. Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson combined for 10-38 shooting with 16 and 15 points respectively which just isn't going to get it done. The Lakers can close out the series on Monday in game 4 in Denver.
LAst Night's Action: Martin Sacrifices for the Win
LA Dodgers (10-13) defeats Colorado Rockies (10-13) 8-7 (13). Third baseman Russell Martin seems to have come out of his early season slump. He went 4-4 with three singles, a double, two walks and that crucial game-winning sacrifice fly in the 13th with the bases loaded. And you read right. In the ninth inning Nomar Garciaparra pulled his calf muscle attempting to dive for a double down the left field line by Scott Podsednik. After the game manager Joe Torre said that Nomar would likely go on the DL thereby bringing Blake DeWitt back up from AAA after being sent down Thursday night (I'm assuming). Andruw Jones also left the game in the fifth inning after fouling a ball of his leg. He got a bruise so that should sit him down for a couple of days.
LAst Night's Action: Beckham Scores!
LA Galaxy defeat San Jose Earthquakes 2-0. The Galaxy still looked to be reeling from Sunday night's 4-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids when San Jose scored a goal in the second minute. Fortunately for the Galaxy the goal was waved off by an off-sides call, and the Galaxy went on to score two goals in the first half. David Beckham scored his first goal in the MLS in the ninth minute assisted by Landen Donavon and Donavon scored a goal in the 37th minute assisted by Beckham in the Galaxy's victory.
