The Los Angeles Lakers trade deadline was today, and they've wrangled out a deal to trade Luke Walton and Derek Fisher, but not Pau Gasol, who was the subject of much trade rumor speculation in recent days.
Lakers Trade Fisher and Walton (But NOT Gasol!) For Cavs' Sessions
NBA Cancels First Two Weeks of Season, More Looming
Monday night on the streets of New York City, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced the cancellation of the first two weeks of the NBA season. This included all 100 games scheduled to be played through November 14 which will cost players $160 million in salary. Stern added that further cancellations will come in two-week increments.
LAst Night's Action: Big Papi Comes Up Big in Home Run Derby
David Ortiz wins All Star Home Run Derby. All but written off after a horrible April, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz defeated Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez 11-5 in the final round. Both advanced to final round after hitting 21 home runs each in the first two rounds beating out Milwaukee Brewers’ right fielder Corey Hart with 13 and Detroit Tigers’ first baseman Miguel Cabrera with 12 for a showdown between embattled stars. Ortiz, who batted .143 with one homer in the first month of the season, has rebounded for a season average of .263 with 18 homers and 57 RBI. Ramirez meanwhile was notably benched on May 18 by then-manager Fredi Gonzalez after being accused of not hustling on a play.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Win Series Against Rangers
LA Angels defeat Texas Rangers 2-1. The Angels yet again got on the board in the first inning Howie Kendrick doubled in lead-off hitter Erick Aybar, but after that it was a whole bunch of nothing. A pitchers’ duel emerged between the Rangers’ CJ Wilson and the Angels’ Jered Weaver as they staved off the other team. It wasn’t an NL West type of pitchers’ duel where it was 1-2-3-strike out. It took a lot of pitches...
Derek Fisher Propels Lakers to 2-1 Series Lead Over Celtics
Derek Fisher is too old and too slow. That may be, but he was the reason the Lakers beat the Boston Celtics 91-84 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals in Boston for the 2-1 series lead.
Derek Fisher Suspended One Game
Laker's guard Derek Fisher has been suspended by the NBA for Friday's game 3 against the Houston Rockets at Houston. He bodychecked Rockets forward Luis Scola in the waning minutes of the third quarter that was a ruled a flagrant-two foul resulting in an ejection. Kobe Bryant's elbow to Ron Artest in the fourth quarter was upgraded to a flagrant-one foul and will not result in any suspension.
Lakers: The Passion Bucket Overfloweth
Dude, strange things are afoot in Lakerland. Last night, en route to the Lakers beating the Nuggets 116-99, Kobe Bryant passed the ball. He made shit happen. And then, postgame, with a smile on his face, Kobe spoke in approving terms about his team, citing the fullness of their “passion bucket”. WHO IS THIS MAN?
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Heating Up
Lakers 112, Pacers 96 - The purple and gold have won six of seven and 12 of their last 15 games. Against Indiana, several players had big nights. All five starters hit double-digits in scoring, including 26 from Kobe Bryant, 23 from Andrew Bynum, and 22 from Derek Fisher. The Pacers are 0-9 against the Lakers in Staples Center.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers/Ducks Win, Clippers/Kings Lose, World is Right
Lakers 111, Nuggets 107 - Allen Iverson lit up the scoreboard with 51 points but three Lakers responded with big nights of their own. Kobe Bryant scored 25, Vladimir Radmanovic added 21, and Derek Fisher had 20. Despite his big night, the Lakers only allowed Iverson one layup in the fourth quarter. Sonics 95, Clippers 88 - Seven is unlucky for the Clipper -- it's how many games they've lost in a row. Seattle led...
LAst Night's Action: Hoops Off to Good Start
Lakers 119, Jazz 109 - The Lakers may have won their second straight game against a division champ. Kobe may be playing team ball (and even blocked a dunk, for cryin' out loud). We're still not buying it ... Derek Fisher was 0-for-7 in the first half against his former team, but finished with 19 points ... The Lakers removed press row from courtside, adding 15 more seats which are going for $2,300 per game....
Vlade Divac: No Flop
Memorable Laker achievements extend from the glory days of George Mikan to their recent string of championships with Phil, Shaq and Kobe, but one of the most important contributions from Laker past came to an anticlimactic end this week.
The Real McKie
Mark Heisler of the Times writes that the team's change in focus from Derek Anderson to McKie was at the request of Phil Jackson. If true, that tells you who is really calling the shots for the Lakers for these days.
What's the Point?
Now Smush Parker may be a fun player, and LAist thinks the second-year man from Fordham has a decent game, but when he's your best point guard you've got a problem. Aside from Parker, the Lakers have unproven Euro Sasha Vujacic, rookie Von Wafer, and former Cincinnati guard Tony Bobbitt on the roster. That's it.
LAist End of the Year Sports Awards
He may no longer be a Laker, but Derek Fisher's shot with 0.4 seconds left against San Antonio was the best thing to happen to LA sports fans all year. With every Laker annoying the hell out of the city of LA, from Shaq to Kobe to Malone to the Glove to Phil to Jerry Buss to Jeannie Buss, it was always nice to know that D-Fish was around. Sure, he couldn't defend to save his life. And he probably did take too many threes. But Derek Fisher was a consummate professional who was finally rewarded for years of hard work and humility.
Golden State Fishing
This move is beyond perplexing. Why would Fisher want to play for one of the worst teams in the NBA, and be reunited with Nick Van Exel? It must be the money, and now you have to figure that the Warriors will trade Van Exel or Speedy Claxton. Lakers fans may remember Van Exel acting openly jealous and childish over being benched in favor of Fisher back in 1998, which led Jerry West to ship Van Exel to Denver for almost nothing.
Is Rudy T The Way To Be?
While Tomjanovich is no Phil Jackson, this is good news for Lakers fans. In today's NBA, there is no coaching job more strenuous and complex than the Lakers', and Jerry Buss could not get away with handing the keys to the franchise over to a less-experienced coach like Jim Cleamons, Kurt Rambis, or Brian Shaw.
