An inmate at the jail downtown died suddenly in his cell on Thursday, after a deputy had punched him in the head, according to the Los Angeles Times. Whether or not that blow to the head caused the inmate's death is something that an autopsy will determine, but the incident hasn't done anything to dispel the cloud haning over the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. more ›

A rookie and "honor recruit" from the L.A. County Sheriff's department resigned shortly after he said that he was forced to beat a mentally ill inmate, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 23-year-old rookie Joshua Sather had been working a shift at the jail downtown last year, when he called his uncle a veteran in the department crying. He complained that he had been forced to beat up a mentally disabled inmate. He quit almost immediately after and now works in oil fields in Colorado. more ›

Duane Parkinson, a 42-year-old husband and father of three, was killed on Wednesday, August, 10, after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Irvine. Parkinson was also a San Bernardino County deputy, reports Daily Pilot. He was off-duty at the time of the incident. more ›

While investigating suspicious activity in a car parked in a red zone last night at 7:20 p.m., a sheriff's deputy was shot in the face by a paroled gang member, who was then shot and killed by a second deputy, according to ABC. The injured deputy, 27-year-old Mohamed Ahmed, was in his third week of training and was shot during his first assignment in the field. Just hours before he was found, [41-year-old Gerald] Stenger was charged Wednesday morning with molesting a 12-year-old boy for two years after meeting him through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. Stenger was charged with one felony count of lewd acts on a child younger than 14 and one felony count of continuous sexual abuse, with a sentencing enhancement allegation for substantial sexual conduct. -- OC Register

Three Los Angeles Sheriff Department (LASD) deputies assigned to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown are suspended (or, paid leave, that is) as a criminal investigation is opened into accusations from an inmate saying that he was isolated by them, punched and pepper-sprayed in the anus and scrotum area. It all started when inmate Alejandro Franco, 23, who is there for "allegedly violating terms of his probation for a domestic violence conviction," swore at a deputy when he requested a clean shirt and was refused.

About 45 minutes after the argument, three deputies removed him from his cell, handcuffed him and took him to a recreation area away from other inmates, Franco said. more ›
