Map: A Beefed Up Vision of High Speed Rail in the West

A group of municipal associations combined forces last week to advocate for more high speed rail in Western states, announcing the formation of a new high speed rail group called the Western High Speed Rail Alliance. At issue for them is less than enthusiastic vision of high speed rail in the West. In an editorial, the Arizona Republic agrees: "Major Western cities, including Phoenix, were left off the map in federal plans for high-speed rail. Now, five of them are refusing to be overlooked. How preposterous." more ›

Welcome, Tourists. Passenger Bridge Collapses at LAX

Welcome, Tourists. Passenger Bridge Collapses at LAX

"Frontier Airlines Flight # 413 (Airbus A-319 aircraft) had just arrived from Denver shortly before 3 pm today and docked at a Terminal 6 gate when the passenger loading bridge that was extending from the terminal to the aircraft door collapsed onto the fuselage (or body) of the aircraft," LAX Spokesperson Nancy Castles said in a press statement today. She said that none of the 132 passengers were injured because no one was on the bridge at the time of the collapse. They deplaned at the back using portable stairs. "There will be an investigation into why the loading bridge failed," Castles said. UPDATE: The plane was "slightly damaged and was taken out of commission," Castles said in an updated e-mail. "The large, rubber seal that contacts the aircraft slipped about 2 feet and scratches on the aircraft door are apparent." Outbound passengers on the plane that was scheduled to head back to Denver will be put on other flights with a few passengers staying local hotels because they will miss connecting flights. more ›

LAst Night's Action: All Eyes Elsewhere

LAst Night's Action: All Eyes Elsewhere

NFL Playoffs - It was almost the perfect Super Bowl match up. Instead of Brady-Favre, we get Brady-Manning -- but it's the wrong Manning, if you're going to have one. New England held off San Diego and New York stole it in OT from Green Bay to face off in the big game. Green Bay would have presented the better threat to the Pat's attempt at a perfect season (their secondary is better than the Giant's), and the QB showdown would have been epic. A lot of people also painted those teams as the "good" and "evil" of the NFL. It wasn't to be. Now, we get the team of destiny versus the team of a superstar's kid brother. more ›

NFL Week 1 Fallout

NFL Week 1 Fallout

Here we are at the end of Week 1 of the NFL season, and we learned several things. Things learned the first: special teams are essential to win the game. By the time the holder got the ball, there was only one second left in the... more ›

NFL Week 1 Predictions

NFL Week 1 Predictions

That opening game of the NFL was a kick in the nuts, wasn’t it? The Indianapolis Colts proved their defense wasn’t a mere fluke in last season’s playoff by only allowing the New Orleans Saints offense to only score a field goal in their 41-10 blowout. At least I was right about the Saints having a pretty porous defense. With the exception of the Reggie Wayne fumble that was taken for a touchdown, no... more ›
