A six-person artist collective in Highland Park called THIS Los Angeles is asking for the public's help in tracking down a piece of art that was reportedly stolen last night from the opening of a new exhibit called These Friends. According to the THIS Los Angeles website, as the opening night crowds were leaving and cleanup was underway an unidentified person grabbed a piece of art from the wall -- a personal piece not for sale -- and ran out the front door of the gallery space. more ›

Pencil This In: Film Noir Classics at the Academy, The Scenesters Run LA

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues its summer screening of film noir classics from the 1940s. The films included in the program were nominated in the writing categories. Tonight’s film is Kiss of Death with Richard Widmark’s debut as “one of the all-time great villains of film noir.” The film will be introduced by Eric Roth (The Insider, Munich) and special guest tonight is actor Coleen Gray, who plays Nettie in the film. The movie will be preceded by Helen K. Garber’s Urban Noir/LA-NY (2009) and the 1945 Donald Duck cartoon “Duck Pimples.” 7 pm. Tickets: $5. more ›

Dying Dennis Hopper Remains Embroiled in Bitter Divorce

Papers filed yesterday in court indicate that 73-year-old actor Dennis Hopper is too ill to sit for a deposition by his wife's divorce attorney, according to the LA Times' Ministry of Gossip blog. Suffering from prostate cancer and weighing only 100 pounds, Hopper filed for divorce from Victoria Duffy in January, and things have not been amicable. He has accused her of stealing $1.5 million worth of art from a collection that includes a portrait of him by Andy Warhol, and last month he was granted a restraining order against her. Hopper has been medically cleared, however, to appear Friday at his Walk of Fame induction ceremony. more ›
