In the decadent tradition of hand-massaged, beer-fed Kobe beef, a new taste sensation is coming to California: La Quercia artisanal pork. These happy little piggies are raised on an organic farm in Iowa and fed a diet of acorns, just like the famed pigs of Spain's jamon iberico. EaterLA had the scoop yesterday:
These acorn-fed pigs are supposed to produce amazing meat, as they do in Italy and Spain. The company that's responsible for said pigs makes some of the best prosciutto in the country, found on only a few top menus in LA. But more importantly: There were only 45 pigs available, and only 10 SoCal chefs got to participate in the program, which means we'll start seeing this much ballyhooed pork on select local menus.Even Jeffrey Steingarten himself said that the stuff is "the best American or imported prosciutto I’ve ever tasted.”

Earlier this week we checked out El Perro Del Mar and opening act Rosie Thomas at--well, here's the problem: We're not sure where we were, because we weren't where we were told we'd be. In what in the end was a serendipitous turn of events that brought us to a cool venue, we began our evening searching for the Rec Center Studios in Echo Park, only to find first a sign taped behind a gated door telling us to enter in the back, then a person in the back telling us to go a couple of blocks up on Sunset near The Echo. We found two lines of people on either side of an unmarked door, and picked the "wrong" line apparently--we went with the excuse that our psychic abilities haven't been performing to par lately, rather than, oh, say, the fact that there were no signs or markings anywhere indicating what line was for whom. We may well have been at The Echo; we were down some stairs and in a pretty great space. Any readers know for sure where we were? Let us know!
Even though I call LA home, I didn't always live here. Over the years, I've spent time in various other parts of Southern California. Encinitas, Del Mar, San Diego and Fullerton are all places I once lived. Actually, I still think of Encinitas as my other home but as this is LAist and not Encinitasist, that’s not really relevant at the moment. When I first started coming to LA in the early 90s it...
To get from one side of the airport to the other side is always a goddamned headache. You're screwed at every angle. The 405, Sepulveda, Pershing, even Vista Del Mar's a bitch because you're likely to get popped by the cops. Man, what gives? To make things even more lame, if you DO wind up on Sepulveda, and are forced to go under that tunnel, you lose all decent radio reception. As though it...
Last night Council District 2's Wendy Greuel held a community forum, The Intersection of Planning and Transportation, in discussion with Director of Planning, Gail Goldberg and Gloria Jeff, General Manager of DOT. If we were better hackers, we would have live blogged, but LA Valley College protects their WiFi. Nevertheless, some highlights from last night:
The Gold Line's new express service between Pasadena and Downtown LA starts today. It'll make just 4 stops in addition to Union Station: Highland Park, Mission, Del Mar and Sierra Madre Villa.
