1st OC Food Truck to Close Down is NY-Style Deli Truck

1st OC Food Truck to Close Down is NY-Style Deli Truck

Food truck culture has been slow to catch on in Orange County, but now they've got their first casualty. The Brooklyn Boy's Deli Truck made its last stop on Saturday, says the OC Register. Owner Marc Gabriel is selling the truck and taking a chef job in his hometown of Temecula. Word had it that the Deli truck was too pricey for "street food," while others complained they were lousy at letting people know via Twitter where they'd be. We might concur with the latter, since we didn't even know the Brooklyn Boy was serving up the nosh until recently. Maybe SoCal eaters just aren't into pastrami on rye on four wheels; one of the L.A. based trucks to put on the brakes for good was fellow deli-ite Fresser's. more ›

New Truck Will be a Jewish Deli on Wheels

New Truck Will be a Jewish Deli on Wheels

Looks like all the bases are starting to get covered. Last week pizza, this week we learn of Fresser's, which will mostly service Jewish deli meat sandwiches, reports Eater LA via Thrillist. They're serving pastrami, turkey, roast beef and even pot roast sandwiches in addition to " flyover-state-style bowls, jammed with mashed potatoes and gravy and loaded up with your choice of roast beef, pot roast, or turkey & corn, all of which are served with a baguette," says Thrillist. It's already on the streets on the sly and will officially launch in the new year. Follow them on Twitter at @Fressers more ›

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

If we're talking nosh, there's no item perhaps more quintessential than pastrami on rye. The one pictured above hailed from a plate served up at Langer's, a deli that has been a longtime favorite of locals, but has now been praised for offering up the best of its kind in the whole country. The accolade comes from writer David Sax, whose pursuit of the pastrami--and other deli delights--was profiled recently in the LA Times. more ›

The Cheese Stands Alone

The Cheese Stands Alone

It's National Cold Cuts Day. That term has always brought to mind those not very fresh, tasteless sandwich fillers served at large functions that you eat because you don't want to eat only macaroni salad. With the beef recall, dashing to your local butcher for some cold cuts sounds less appetizing than ever. However, the term "cold cuts" can include cheese and that's where you can freely celebrate. more ›

Canter's Matzoh Ball Soup

Canter's Matzoh Ball Soup

When it comes to straightforward chicken broth, Canter's on Fairfax is the broth to beat. It is so hot and soothing, so flavorful. They must put the chicken feet in to get that kind of flavor. You can have chicken or carrots as ad-ins. I chose chicken, and big, moist, chunks of chicken peeled off in strings at the touch of the spoon. It is the best chicken soup around. more ›

Langer's Celebrates its 60th today at 1:30pm

The diversity of MacArthur Park couldn't be more dramatic than the 1940's style old school deli known for its pastrami as Langer's Deli, firmly entrenched on Alvarado, and surrounded by Central- and South American cuisine and shops. Langer's keeps it so real that they close at 4pm and take Sundays off. They have cozy, leather booths, a big menu, and bigger servings. LA Observed reminds us that Langer's celebrates their 60th birthday with a... more ›

Blast From the Past: Tony's Liquor & Grill

Blast From the Past: Tony's Liquor & Grill

It opened in 1947 at the southeast corner of Ventura Blvd. and Dixie Canyon in Sherman Oaks by a man named Tony. Tony is now grandpa and the grandson runs the business. Not only does this liquor and general store have a great old time feeling inside, it has that old Midwestern charm. The building's expressionless corner facade says nothing about the inside, but once within, you will find an array of wines on... more ›
