Construction this weekend to connect Blue Line and Expo Line track seems to have caused a problem and trains are now being delayed. The LA Times reports that some commuters might be facing up to a 40 minute delay between the Washington and 7th/Metro stations, with buses bridging commuters to al stations between.
Major Delays Expected on the Blue Line this Morning
Michael Jackson Memorial Could Suspend Blue Line Service
The memorial for Michael Jackson tomorrow will require shutting down a large area around the Staples Center. Metro's Blue Line Pico Station sits at the corner of that closure and while they are preparing to run service as normal, they are prepared and warning commuters of the worst case scenario, meaning massive crowds forcing the trains to operate between Long Beach and the Washington station. "We're going to run the blue line until told not to," explained Metro Spokesman Rick Jager. "The biggest impact is the busses because they've cornered off a large area." Over 50 bus lines will be re-routed (details below). "We're really urging people to plan ahead tomorrow. They will probably be a lot of delays," said Jager.
Metro Beefs Up Train Service, Expects Bus Delays for Lakers Parade
Blue Line trains will run every 6 minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow to help move the hundreds of thousands of people expected at tomorrow's Lakers victory parade. Additionally, the Red and Purple Lines will carry extra train cars and Gold and Green Lines are prepared to add more trains to service if needed. "Metro Bus services will be significantly impacted in the event area, especially bus lines that either run on or cross Figueroa, Flower or Grand streets, between Olympic and Martin Luther King boulevards," the agency said in a statement. "Delays can be expected beginning about 10 a.m. and will continue until the end of the parade for all passengers riding in the Metro Bus lines: 28, 30, 31, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42, 55, 70, 71, 76, 78, 79, 81, 96, 102, 200, 204, 335, 355, 378, 439, 442, 444, 445, 446, 447, 450x, 460, 484, 485, 550, 714, 728, 730, 740, 754, 770."
LA Bound Plane Gets Stuck in Chicago Snow
Southwest Flight 688 on its way to Los Angeles was taxiing at Chicago's Midway Airport around 9 a.m. yesterday morning when it's right main gear got stuck in the snow on the shoulder of the taxiway. As the day went on, temperatures in Chicago warmed up drastically causing dense fog to cover the region. And then what happened? All flights at Midway were canceled shortly after 6 p.m. ending in 80 canceled flights. Over at the city's main airport, around 400 flights were canceled. If all this trouble has you stuck somewhere out there, The Travel Doctor keeps his list of airports with free Wi-Fi updated.
Downed Wires Cause Green Line Delays
Catenary wires that came down for unknown reasons on Tuesday afternoon will cause delays on the Metro Green Line this morning. Due to a single track operation, trains will operate every fifteen to twenty minutes as crews repair the overhead wires near the Imperial Station where railway intersects the Blue Line. "Crowded conditions will exist until repairs are completed," warned Metro.
Blown Transfomer Causes Power Outage & Delays at LAX
A malfunctioning transformer caused a small grass fire and some power outages at LAX late this morning. The outage is affecting three international flights on the remote West end of the airport as DWP workers move to restore power to the area. The planes, each are carrying over 200 passengers to Tokyo, Santiago and Shanghai, cannot leave their gates because the attached pedestrian walkways need electricity to detach.
Flights Delayed Nationally, LAX Hardly Affected
Flights taking off from airports across the country were delayed after a communications breakdown occurred with the Federal Aviation Administration's processing data for flight-plans at two separate facilities near Atlanta, Georgia and in Salt Lake City, Utah. As for LAX, the FAA reported little to no impact to flights departing West of Chicago and Dallas, according to Treva Miller, an LAX Spokesperson. "As of 2:38 p.m. PST, LAX was not experiencing any flight arrival or departure delays longer than 15 minutes," she said.
Expect Metrolink Delays Due to Mandatory Post-Quake Inspections
Service on Metrolink rail lines across SoCal will have interruptions and delays today while all tracks undergo mandatory post-earthquake inspection. Trains on the Inland Empire, Ventura County, Orange County, and 91 lines will not run until the inspections are completed. According to a live report on KTLA, Metrolink service in general has not been canceled, but is "running significantly slower." All other lines within a 50 mile-radius of the Chino Hills epicenter will run "at restricted speeds." Metrolink users are probably going to need a lot of patience today, especially if they are going online right now to try to access more information via the Metrolink site, which appears to be overburdened and, at this time, inaccessible.
LAX Computer Glitch Strands 20,000 for 14 Hours
When the port director for customs at LAX calls it bad, and he's been around since the '70s you know it's bad. "This is probably one of the worst days we've had. I've been with the agency for 30 years and I've never seen the system go down and stay down for as long as it did," Peter Gordon told the LA Times about the computer meltdown that stranded 20,000 travelers yesterday and early...
LAX Line for Security: Go Wait Outside
Bundle up folks. This isn't a line to get into LAX; this is a line to get through TSA security at LAX's United Terminal. Once you get inside, you go back out to go back in. With yesterday's delays, you may be thinking this picture was taken then. No, it was taken last Saturday afternoon. We can't even imagine what it will be like today and in the coming days....
