Van Nuys: 1 Dead in Shooting, Trash Compactor Kills 1

KABC-TV is reporting a shooting death in front of a Van Nuys apartment building that has left one person dead. Two suspects, one reported to be a female, were apparently seen running eastbond on Vanowen towards Sepulveda. LAPD Media Relations has few details at the moment. Also: The Los Angeles Fire Depatment is reporting the death of a man in his 60's who was apparently was killed in a trash compactor at 8201 N. Woodley Ave., near the Van Nuys Airport.

Hollywood High Mourns Loss of Freshman Football Player

Friday's Freshman-Sophomore football game between Hollywood High School and West Adams Prep ended abruptly when player Spencer Juarez collapsed on the sidelines, with just two minutes of play left. The game was halted, and paramedics were called to transport the teen to Children's Hospital. Teammates say "Juarez had just taken a hit, and as he was jogging back to the sidelines, he fell over," but just what caused the student to collapse...

Hollywood High Football Player Dies After Collapsing During Game

A Hollywood High School football player died yesterday afternoon after being hospitalized when he collapsed during Friday night's game against West Adams Prep, according to LA Now.

The man who died in the press box at Dodger Stadium today was identified as 59-year old (not 49) Farmer Brothers Coffee worker John Foster. Foster had been working on the coffee maker in the press box dining room when he was found on the floor unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

This could be a bad sign for the Dodgers. A 49-year old male vendor died in the Vin Scully Press Box at Dodger Stadium of a heart attack. Being the first open workout a day before the National League Divisional Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, most media members were not in the press box when the vendor died. Access to the press box was blocked off pending the arrival of the coroner, however bags, laptops and cameras were retrieved for the media by several members of the Dodgers staff. Manson Follower Susan Atkins Dies in Prison

Susan Atkins, the longest incarcerated woman in California history, died last night of natural causes. The 61-year-old native from San Gabriel was diagnosed with brain cancer, which prompted her to and relatives to ask for a compassionate release. That, along with thirteen attempts to be paroled, was denied last summer. Her last parole hearing was just a few weeks ago on September 3rd (she's been trying to be paroled since 1976).

Sheriff's Say Crime is Down in Areas they Patrol

Los Angeles County Sheriff's patrol large swaths of land from up in the Antelope Valley to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Charged with all unincorporated areas such as parts of South LA and communities like Castaic and cities that contract their services like West Hollywood and Santa Clarita, yesterday the agency announced a major drop in crime despite the economic downturn. The news comes on the heels of four fatal deputy-involved-shootings that occurred within one week's time.

Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Kill 3 in Separate Incidents

This weekend's fatal deputy involved shootings brings the total number of such incidents to 13 for 2009. There were five in 2008. Before this weekend, Sheriff Lee Baca called for expedited department investigations into deputy shootings of unarmed suspects after such an incident took place last week in Athens. However, at all three shootings this weekend, guns from the suspects were recovered, according to authorities.

House Fire in Reseda Kills Teenager, 3 Dogs

An early morning house fire claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and three dogs in the Reseda neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley. Firefighters reported to 18424 West Saticoy Street at 2:35 a.m., knocking the fire down in 13 minutes, according to Melissa Kelley of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The blaze was supposedly contained to just one room of the house, but Kelley said there was no information regarding his parents or if they were even home. An investigation is pending, but officials said that there were no smoke detectors in the home.

Dad, Children Slain in Apparent Thousand Oaks Murder-Suicide

Yesterday evening, a mother walked into her Thousand Oaks apartment shortly before 6 p.m., finding her son, daughter and husband dead in what police are calling "a gruesome scene." Police say that there is "no reason to believe" that there is a murder suspect on the loose, but would not specifically say it was a murder-suicide. The family lived on the 2700 block of White Ridge Place. The son was 12 years old, the daughter, 7, and the father, who neighbors believe shot his kids before turning a gun on himself, was 52.

NCAA President Myles Brand Dies

President Myles Brand of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's died today after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the first university president--in 2002, he left the top post at Indiana University--to take the job as NCAA's chief executive, most notably becoming a "champion of academic reform, fiscal responsibility and student-athlete well-being," according to the association. "The keystone of his work was the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate program," explained Bloomberg News, "which measured the success of each athletic team in keeping athletes on track to graduate. Teams slipping behind faced penalties, including the loss of athletic scholarships." Brand was 67.

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

After his battle with pancreatic cancer, Patrick Swayze has died, according to his publicist. It occurred today with his family by his side. Since March 2008, when he publicly announced that he was fighting cancer, he continued to work, most recently on A&E's canceled show, The Beast. It was reported last week, he had returned to his Los Angeles home from the hospital to prepare to die.

Traffic Fatalities Sharply Down Over Labor Day Weekend

Last year, 40 people died statewide on roadways patrolled by the California Highway Patrol during Labor Day weekend. This year the number plummeted to 12 with 9 of those victims found not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. “Wearing a seat belt needs to become a habit for drivers and passengers alike,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Buckle up every trip, every time. It may save your life or the life of someone you love.” (we actually feel naked when our seat belt is not on). Also, DUI arrests were down 11 percent this year with 1,417 people caught by officers statewide. Last year, there were 1,586 DUI-related arrests. “Making an arrest is far easier than having to make a notification to the family member of someone whose life was cut short by a drunk or drugged driver," said Farrow. The agency credits the decline to their Maximum Enforcement Period they instituted, which assigns every available officer to the roads.

Fallen Fireman, Ted Hall, Saluted on 123-Mile Journey Home

Fire Captain Tedmund Hall died along with firefighter Arnaldo Quinones last Sunday afternoon during the Station Fire when their truck plunged down an 800-foot hillside. Today, his body was transported to his Victorville home while being saluted at various points along the 123-mile route from Los Angeles (see the route embedded below). A week from tomorrow, a public memorial will be held for Hall and Quinones at Dodger Stadium.

Man Dies in Harbor Gateway 'Pack Rat' Fire

Although Los Angeles firefighters knocked down flames in 17 minutes at an early morning fire in Harbor Gateway, one man pronounced dead inside the home. The blaze began around 4:45 a.m. at 15925 Orchard Ave. Officials say pack rat conditions, often referred on the east coast as a Collyers' Mansion, were found inside. Back in 1999, about six people died in "pack rat" fires per year, the LA Times found. "Almost all pack rats--also known as hoarders, recyclers and clutterers--live in squalid conditions that violate Los Angeles County health and safety codes, officials say," reported the Times. "They can expose themselves and neighbors to airborne respiratory illness and diseases carried by the rodents and insects that often take refuge in pack-rat dwellings. In many cases, a pack rat's home or apartment is essentially a huge tinderbox." As for today's fire, it is unknown if the home was in code violation.

A crash between two vehicles left an apparent transient dead this morning during rush hour in North Hollywood. Around 7:53 a.m., the vehicles traveling eastbound on the 134 freeway collided, leaving the freeway over the side where an encampment was set up behind the McDonalds at Riverside Drive and Lankershim Boulevard. "He just happened to be there at the wrong place at the wrong time," explained California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Luevano over the phone.

Public Memorial for Fallen Firefighters to be Held at Dodger Stadium

For those wanting to honor the two men who lost their lives fighting the Station Fire, a large public memorial will be held a week from Saturday at 10 a.m. in Dodger Stadium, the L.A. County Fire Department announced today, saying more details will come soon.

Firefighter Who Lost Life in Station Fire was Expecting a Child

LA County Fire released the biographies of the two fallen firefighters today. Fire Captain Tedmund D. “Ted” Hall, 47 and Fire Fighter Specialist Arnaldo “Arnie” Quinones, 34, died yesterday afternoon when their vehicle went over the side of a road, plunging 800 feet into a canyon near Camp 16, a Department of Corrections facility, in Palmdale. Especially saddening is that Quinones was expecting his first child in the next several weeks. Biographies are below:

LA County Fire Releases Names of 2 Killed in Line of Duty

Officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department released the names of the two firefighters who lost their lives in the Station Fire earlier today. Captain Tedmund “Ted” Hall, 47, and 35-year-old Firefighter Specialist Arnaldo ”Arnie” Quinones went over the edge of a mountainside road south of Acton as they were overrun by the fire while driving a vehicle. Hall, a 26-year veteran of the department, lived in San Bernardino and Quinones, of Palmdale, served for eight years. "This accident is tragic," said Captain Mike Bryant with difficulty at a press conference earlier today. "This is a very diffcult time for Los Angeles County Fire Department and the men and women that serve day in, day out." Funeral arrangements are pending and information relating to services will be made available in the near future.

Authorities Officially Rule Michael Jackson's Death a Homicide

Although it was all but official until now, today the Los Angeles County coroner's office "confirmed that it has ruled Michael Jackson's death to be a homicide, caused primarily by 'propofol intoxication,'" reports KNX1070 in a breaking news e-mail alert. The LAPD, the lead agency into the death, also announced this morning that separate investigations will occur into matters uncovered in the death investigation, but do not directly relate to the cause of Jackson's death. Those most likely are the various drugs, prescription included, found at his home and in his body. The Drug Enforcement Administration and Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement will be looking into those aspects. The LAPD's press release is below in full.

Is There a 2nd Suspect in the Murder of Jasmine Fiore?

Although the sought-after suspect, Ryan Jenkins, was found dead Sunday evening in a British Columbia motel room, authorities are still searching for Jasmine Fiore's car and the possibility of a second suspect in the case. Her white Mercedes sedan is still missing and may hold the key to clueing police in if there is a second suspect. “The Mercedes is still missing. It is the biggest piece of the puzzle. We hope it will contain evidence that will help us determine what happened,” said Sgt. William Kohanek to the LA Times. “Did someone else drive it away?" Fiore's body was found stuffed in a suitcase on August 15th. The day before Jenkins was at a hotel in Del Mar. When he checked into the Canadian motel while on the run last week, there was a woman accompanying him who is now a "person of interest."

Missing Model ID'd as Woman Stuffed into Suitcase in Buena Park

The body of a woman stuffed into a suitcase found over the weekend was connected to the woman the LAPD Missing Persons unit was searching for today. Police asked the public's help late last night in the search for 28-year-old Jasmine Fiore, a model who had recently moved from Las Vegas to the Fairfax District in Los Angeles to start up a personal training business. She was last seen Friday around 8:30 p.m. at her home on the 800 block of Edinburgh Avenue. On Saturday morning, a homeless person sifting through a trash container in the city of Buena Park on the 7400 block of Franklin Street found a woman described as in her twenties, but police had not identified her until today.

R.I.P. Les Paul, Where to Find his Hollywood Star

Guitarist and inventor Les Paul died today at the age of 94 in New York. He brought us multi-track recording and the electric guitar, which originally was called "The Log." Before looking like a guitar, it was "a four-by-four piece of wood with steel strings," the Associated Press describes. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place flowers at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You can pay your respects at 1541 N. Vine Street, south of Selma Avenue.

Coroner Completes Michael Jackson Autopsy, Withholds Results

The Los Angeles County Coroner announced today that their "thorough and comprehensive" investigation into the death of Michael Jackson has been completed. However, the LAPD has requested the information remain confidential as their investigation continues. "The extension of security measures will help maintain the integrity of the investigation and allow investigators from LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division, as well as our partner law enforcement agencies to continue their investigation," they explained in a statement. Further questions about the investigation will not be answered. As for Jackson's body, his family is still deciding where to bury him.

Breakfast Club Writer/Director, John Hughes, Dies at 59

Director John Hughes, 59, has died, according to TMZ. He was in New York City on a trip taking a morning walk when he suffered from a heart attack today. Hughes' movies--some of them that he wrote, director or both--many of them based in around Chicago, included classics such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Home Alone and Planes, Trains & Automobiles. After stepping back from the film industry, he resided in Northern Illinois on a functioning farm, enjoying his time with a family and supporting independent art, notes Variety. R.I.P., John Hughes and you were right when you wrote this line for Ferris: "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Metrolink Collision Leaves SUV Driver Dead in Pacoima

A driver, reported to be an elderly woman in an SUV by KNX1070, was killed when her vehicle was struck by a Metrolink train this afternoon in Pacoima. The train was heading towards Antelope Valley Los Angeles when the collision occurred at between Van Nuys Blvd. and Pierce St. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a bus bridge is currently continuing service for the 22 passengers on board.

Las Vegas Home & Office of Michael Jackson's Doctor Raided

Last week, authorities raided Dr. Conrad Murray's office in Houston. Today, his other office and home in Las Vegas. Search warrants said DEA and police were looking for "items constituting evidence of the offense of manslaughter that tend to show that Dr. Conrad Murray committed the said criminal offense." Murray's lawyer told the Associated Press yesterday that he did not prescribe or administer anything that should have killed Jackson. Murray was paid $150,000 a month to care for the pop star and was at the Bel Air abode when he died.

Propofol May Have Killed Michael Jackson, Says AP Source

A source close to the investigation of Michael Jackson's death has told the Associated Press that the pop star's doctor administered a drug that authorities believe killed him. Dr. Conrad Murray, who is the subject of a manslaughter investigation, apparently gave Jackson anesthetic propofol to help with sleep. "Murray's lawyer has said the doctor didn't prescribe or administer anything that should have killed Jackson," said the AP (bold emphasis by LAist).

6-Year-Old Found Dead, Police Can't Find Step Father

Last night police responded to a home in South LA finding a the body of a young boy with unexplained injuries, which are suspected to be from child abuse. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene on the 800 block of 87th Place. His father, Marcas Fisher, is the last known care-taker of the boy and his whereabouts are not known. Now the LAPD's Juvenile Division is requesting the public’s help to locate Mr. Fisher, so that he can help explain the child’s injuries. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call LAPD Juvenile Division Detectives at (213) 485-2801. L.A.'s Murder Rate is Still Down

By LA Weekly's count of every murder within Los Angeles city limits, we are at 168 as of yesterday when a taxi driver stabbed earlier this month died of his wounds. Compare that to last year July 18th, when there were 208 murders and juxtapose that to the 162 this year as of that date. That's a 22.1% decline in murders so far. Add to that, the murder rate has declined over the last few years. The LAPD's consent decree ended last week, which in theory should let officers be more productive in some aspects, but some oppose the lifting of the decree. The ACLU contends that there are still problems within the department in regards to racial bias.
