A little over a month ago, Chivas USA traded forward Atiba Harris to FC Dallas for midfielder/defender Marcelo Saragosa in a move that left many speculating what plans the red-and-whites might have in mind as they prepared for their playoff run. Some fans and analysts speculated that the team was making room for a big name signing, while others were puzzled at the move, given the team had been struggling on the offensive side. Lingering questions were answered over the last few days and the rest of MLS better take notice.

Chivas USA survived a relentless D.C. United attack last night to hang on for a 2 - 2 tie at the Home Depot Center.

D.C. United visits Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center tonight in a duel of conference leaders. United will be a tough test for the league leading Chivas USA squad who boasts a 7 - 1 - 1 record almost a third of the way into the season.

   

Under the guidance of Head Coach Preki Radosavljevic and his staff, the 2009 version of Chivas USA is off to its best start in franchise history. It heads into the 9th week of MLS action atop the overall league standings with a 7 - 1 - 1 record and 8 point lead over the next best team, D.C. United.

Galaxy defender Ante Jazic got things going early for the blue-and-gold against D.C. United, but unfortunately, it got them going in the wrong direction.

LA Dodgers defeat LA Angels 6-2. It took a National League team to give Ervin Santana his first loss. Blake Dewitt led things off the scoring in the second inning with a questionable two-run homer. It looked like a fan had interfered with the ball, but the umpires ruled the ball a home run. Chan Ho Park got the start for the Dodgers and fortunately Tim Belcher was not in attendance. He had a rough fourth inning giving up two runs one of which were earned thanks to some very shoddy defense. Hong-Chih Kuo came in the fifth inning and shut down the Angel's momentum.

Cubs 8, Dodgers 2 - There goes that winning streak. The Blew Crew committed three errors, but only allowed one unearned run. That left an average of one earned for each of the seven pitchers used by Los Angeles. Juan Pierre was responsible for one of the errors, but also picked up his 55th stolen base of the year. Beckham had his first start with the Galaxy on Wednesday night. He also had his first yellow card, first assist, and first GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!

Cardinals 12, Dodgers 2 - At least the Dodgers took the first game from St. Louis. They were hammered in the rubber game, as Mark Hendrickson allowed eight runs on 11 hits in just 2 and 2/3 innings. Andre Ethier was the only Dodger holding up the offense, with a double, triple, and RBI. Angels 6, Twins 2 - The Angels shut down Minnesota in three straight games this weekend. Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. This was just days after shutting down Barry Bonds, who has smashed three homers and set the career record since departing LA. Before tomorrow night's MLS match pitting the LA Galaxy against DC United, Mexican rock band Kinky will play a special pre-game set for soccer and music fans. Kinky is five-member band from Monterrey, Mexico. Their song "Solo un Paso" from is the theme for Fox Sports en Español's 2007 MLS broadcasts, with the video featured n the channel's pre-game montage. Donovan coming to the Galaxy is akin to the Lakers signing Shaq or the Angels signing Vlad Guerrero. Donovan might the best American soccer player, having led Team USA to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, and single-handedly led the San Jose Earthquakes to two MLS Cup titles. At 23, the best is yet to come.

Guess being in first place wasn't good enough.
