Crying In Public Is Embarrassing: Jackson Browne w/ Dawes & Jonathan Wilson At The Satellite
Jackson Browne, the storied, Southern California songwriting idol, delighted in the gig remarking, "Didn't know if I'd have a chance to play here." Though delivered in an earnest deadpan, there was clearly an implied wink.
Jackson Browne w/ Dawes & Jonathan Wilson: Surprise Show At The Satellite!
SoCal icon Jackson Browne will be surprise headlining the Satellite tonight joined by local foursome Dawes and Jonathan Wilson. This special show is a warm up of sorts -- Dawes and Wilson will be joining Browne this month in Spain. Tickets are $25 and go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday through Ticketfly BUY THEM HERE.
Tonight In Rock: Lucero, Dawes, Dum Dum Girls, Generationals
Tonight Southern rockers Lucero will be headlining the Echo with none other than local alt-rockers Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview). Local alt-rock act Dawes are slated to perform for free at UCLA's Royce Hall (if you're a student of course).
And, lastly, local garage pop quartet Dum Dum Girls will be gracing the Skybar at the Mondrian. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Satellite to catch New Orleans-bred indie pop act the Generationals. LAist favorites, Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as the Afternoons) and NY-based duo Minks are slated to perform as well.
Tonight In Rock: El Guincho, Dawes, Freddy & Francine, Franklin For Short
Tonight Spanish singer-songwriter Pablo Díaz-Reixa, who performs under the pseudonym El Guincho, will be headlining Spaceland with local indie rockers the Holloys in anticipation of his latest series of limited edition EPs. LA-based alternative folk duo Freddy & Francine are poised to grace the Bootleg Theater. And, lastly, Ventura's own indie rockers Franklin for Short, who recently concluded a stint with Kings of Convenience and released their sixth studio-album entitled Dark Cloud, will be performing for free, in-store at Origami Vinyl. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Getty Center to catch local alt-rock act Dawes, who will be performing for this month's edition of 'Saturdays Off The 405.'
LAist On Location: SXSW 2010 - Day 4
It was almost as if a giant, grumpy deity wielding a garden hose came down from the sky on Saturday morning and announced, "You kids are having too much fun! Cool it." Rain poured from the sky in the early morning, and the gorgeous seventy degree weather evaporated over night. Austin was suddenly engulfed in forty degree temperatures and high wind, turning the summery celebration into a chilled autumnal fest. Not that it stopped anyone from attending shows outside. The masses were out (granted in slightly decreased numbers) wrapped in scarves and hats, ready to rock out.
Tonight In Rock: The Dead Weather, Fruit Bats, Dungen, Dawes
Tonight Nashville-based alternative rock super-group the Dead Weather are poised to take LA by storm, playing at the Mayan Theatre with none other than Tyvek. Swedish psych rockers Dungen are poised to perform at the Troubadour with equally heady acts like Kurt Vile and Woods. And, lastly, local alt-rockers Dawes will be closing out their month-long residency at the Echo with NY's own folk rock quartet Chief. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Portland-by-way-of-Chicago folk rock outfit Fruit Bats. San Francisco-by-way-of-Wisconsin indie pop act A B and the Sea will be kicking things off.
Tonight In Rock: Dawes, Luke Top, Abe Vigoda, Wait.Think.Fast.
Tonight local alt-rockers Dawes will be taking on their second residency of the week (their first takes place at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa every Monday) at the Echo with Slang Chickens in tow. Experimental punk outfit Abe Vigoda are poised to take on the Smell. And, lastly, Echo Park-bred indie rock quartet Wait.Think.Fast. will be gracing La Cita. But we strongly suggest heading over to Pershing Square in Downtown to catch LAist favorite, LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—who may also be recognized as the front man of local afro-centric indie pop outfit Fool's Gold. Fullerton's own garage rockers My Pet Saddle are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Robert Francis, Gabriella Cilmi, Rocco Deluca, Olin & the Moon
Tonight 17-year-old Australian singer-songwriter sensation Gabriella Cilmi will be performing at the Hotel Café. English psych rocker Pop Levi will be rocking out at the Echoplex for 826LA's Tiny Vaudeville. And all three free Monday Night Residencies, which have simply dominated Silver Lake and Echo Park for the past month, will be coming to a conclusion. Local singer-songwriter Rocco Deluca (LAist Interview, Review) is slated to play his final show at Spaceland with LAist favorites Marvelous Toy. Echo Park's own alt-rockers Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview) will be concluding their stint at the Silver Lake Lounge with Evan Way (of the Parson Red Heads) and Taylor Goldsmith (of Dawes). But we insist that you head over to the Echo to catch Robert Francis (LAist Interview, Review), who will be closing up shop with Austin-based folk rockers Peter and the Wolf.
Tonight In Rock: Gipsy Kings, Akon, Dawes, Bobb Bruno
Tonight is the calm before the NYE storm. French Rumba Flamenca outfit the Gipsy Kings are slated to headline the newly renovated Conga Room (LAist Review). Atlanta-based R&B singer-songwriter Akon will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. And speaking of Downtown, a slew of punk-inflected bands are poised to rock the Smell. But we strongly suggest that you head over to the Echoplex to catch local alt-rockers Dawes. Get there early and get in for free!
Old Bank District Holiday Block Party w/ Dawes, Rumspringa & The Like @ 4th & Main, 12/6/08
This past Saturday, the first annual OId Bank District Holiday Block Party was held at the intersection of 4th and Main in Downtown LA. The main stage, booked by Little Radio (MySpace), featured local bands Restaurant (MySpace), Dawes (MySpace), Rumspringa (MySpace), The Like (MySpace), Whispertown 2000 (MySpace), and The Afternoons (MySpace).
Tonight In Rock: New Kids On The Block, Nas, Hellogoodbye, Obi Best
Tonight NY-based rapper Nas (LAist Review) will be performing at Club Nokia. OC's finest pop rockers Hellogoodbye are slated to play a sold-out show at the Knitting Factory. LA-based psych-rockers the Entrance Band will be stopping by the Airliner for Low End Theory Club night. And on that peculiar note, Americana act Dawes are partying at the posh confines of the Standard Hotel in Downtown. If you're looking for something that's free, then head over to the Echo to catch a wondrous bill of LA locals, including Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (LAist Review, #2), Obi Best and Princeton (LAist Interview). But we suggest shelling out a few dollars to catch a glimpse of singer-songwriter Shara Worden's ethereal world. You may remember her name from Sufjan Stevens' immaculate catalog. Brooklyn-based My Brightest Diamond will be playing the Hotel Café with Clare & The Reasons.
