Tonight In Rock: Pearl Jam, Datarock, Paper Route, Voxhaul Broadcast

Tonight legendary Seattle-based alternative rockers Pearl Jam will be headlining a sold-out show at the Gibson Amphitheatre with none other than Claremont-bred multi-instrumentalist Ben Harper. Norwegian electro rock outfit Datarock (LAist Review, #2) are poised to take on the El Rey Theatre with English pop savant Esser in tow. And, lastly, local indie rock act Voxhaul Broadcast and LA-by-way-of-Pennsylvania indie rockers Eastern Conference Champions will be performing at the Echo in celebration of former LA Times music critic Kevin Bronson's first year blogging at Buzz Bands. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Nashville-based electro-infused indie rock quartet Paper Route.

Tonight In Rock: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Datarock, War Tapes, Telepathe

Tonight Brooklyn-based soul/funk group Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl for the Playboy Jazz Festival. Norwegian electro-pop act Datarock are poised to headline the Key Club in Hollywood. And, lastly, local rockers War Tapes will be gracing the streets of Long Beach (Long Beach Blvd. & Broadway, to be exact) with Deep Sea Diver (LAist Review) among many other talented locals for 2009's Tour Des Artistes. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Smell in Downtown to catch synth-infused pop act Telepathe. LAist favorites Nite Jewel and Abe Vigoda slated to kick things off.

You know its officially summer when the Hollywood Bowl schedule is in full swing and your local Whole Foods boast empty shelves of wine and cheese. Yes, the sun is out later and perfect temperatures always serve as a pleasant compliment to any night of music, but that isn’t to say that there’s nothing going on in your favorite sweaty rock venue. July happens to be a jam-packed month, and we’d like to give you a little breakdown.

Ladytron evokes a cold, ethereal and graceful mood, so how is that I wanted to start a mosh pit all night?

Last night the El Rey Theater was host to British music magazine NME's first US awards. You can find the list of award winners at Twisted Ear, since it seems like the sudden attention has crashed NME's website. For a recap of the awards show, check out MOG.

Everybody's doing it, right? I don't pretend to be hip or edgy or rebellious. I mean, I grew up on Billy Joel and Madonna and Motown and then the Gen Xer's basic dichotomy of KROQ versus Top 40 in the 90s. I find it increasingly harder to fall in love with albums in the downloading age, and am one of those people who obsessively compiles mixed cds for friends and iPod playlists full of individual tracks from a broad sampling of artists. The three places I'm most thankful for getting me turned on to new music would be my fellow LAisters, the awesome site 3hive, and good ol' KCRW. So without further ado, here are my pics for the 2007 releases I most enjoyed:

It's not really a big Wednesday, I'm just making a reference to the obscure and awful surfer flick starring Jan Michael Vincent and Gary Busey. I've got a major case of the munchies as I write this so tonight's primetime is all about food for me. 8:00pm Back To You FOX - Series Premiere - oops, NOT[TD]. I'm not so sure I want to give Kelsey Grammar another chance on network TV. I would like...

I showed up halfway through Honeycuts set, which was a bummer, because i have seen them play and they're show is fantastic. But i was there in time to hear my favorite, "Crowded Avenue" and the boys were killing it like always. I love those guys. I was really unfamiliar with Datarock. I knew that my girlfriend liked them, and thats about it. But they nailed it with their heavily textured and layered anthems,...

When DATAROCK did their thing at Club NME in March, LAist was there sorta... and we busted with a sweet photo essay for your ass. Actually it was Wathana Lim's first contribution to our blog. Ah memories. Sniff. Recently the LA Weekly had an interview with the Norwegian duo who described how the band was created. We fell in love. He became pregnant and gave birth to a small Casio watch. As our love...

Layered in funk and schooled in rock'n'roll the bay area trio Honeycut will be busting out the jams at the Echo Wednesday night with Norwegian duo DATAROCK sharing the marquee. Honeycut are a unique band full of soulful lyrics and keyboard riffs, while being counter balanced by the loopy, hip-hoppy drums provided live via an MPC. And of course the rockin' presence they can't help but exude. And what do you get when you...

The assignment was simple - of all the great music that gets sent to us, I had to pick the top ten new cds whose street dates were between January 1, 2007 - June 15, 2007. Despite the fact that so many good records have come out in that time the selections were surprisingly easy to come about. 10. We here in the Ist-A-Verse know that we're sensational, but it's very rare that we get a chance to be sensationalistic. This week, we've decided to have ourselves a little fun and try our hand at tacky tabloid headlines, using nothing more than our favorite posts from this week.

We can't get enough of Datarock and they can't get enough of our city. These Norwegians love LA so much the drummer got a tattoo of it on his arm. He showed it off during their last performance in town Wednesday at Spaceland. Check out their romantic proclamations to the city as they segue into "Computer Camp Love."

LAist gets and listens to a Lot of music. You can see the bands we like in the concerts that we review, the Tonight in Rock listings that we compile, and in the cds that we review. But we realize that we listen to way more music than we review so we figured we make a list once a week letting you know what we're into. week ending 3/31/07 Arcade Fire - Neon Bible...

The Norwegian new rave band Datarock graced LA twice this week. On Tuesday they played East Hollywood's Safari Sam's and yesterday they headlined Club NME's night at Spaceland. LAist was lucky enough to have local photographer Wathana Lim take some photos for us last night, way more after the jump....
