Box Office Review: Ass-Kicked!

The smart money had the fantastic Kick-Ass winning the weekend box-office race after a month of promotion and hot buzz. Good thing people can't bet on movie futures yet, because How to Train Your Dragon experienced a strong surge in its third weekend to best all comers. Thanks to a huge amount of screens and the benefit of premium 3-D prices, the DreamWorks kid pic raked in $20M ($158.6M) to edge Matthew Vaughn's hard-R comic book treatment ($19.75M) (of course that could change when Monday actuals come in, but who pays attention to those?) Date Night enjoyed a strong second weekend ($17.3M | $49.2M) to top the disappointing Death at a Funeral ($17M). Clash of the Titans rounded out the top 5 ($15.7M | $132.9M). more ›

Your Weekly LAist Film Calendar

Your Weekly LAist Film Calendar

Every so often, two movies play in theaters that appear so similar, it rips a hole in the cultural zeitgeist. Antz & A Bug's Life. Armageddon & Deep Impact. Capote & Infamous. Back to the Future & Back to the Future. Take your pick; the entire trilogy plays this weekend at both the New Beverly and the Aero. Same Doc-day, same Doc-ticket price. It's probably easier to sneak beverages into the New Bev, but Great Scott - do NOT, under any circumstances, play the Back to the Future drinking game! Trust me on this... more ›

Movie Review: <i>Be Kind Rewind</i>

Movie Review: Be Kind Rewind

If you think you know what is a film about filmmaking and, more specifically, it's a film about the tight communities that form around the making of a film. It's a daffy ode to the hard work, compromise and wild invention that making a movie inevitably requires. Anyone who's ever made a low-budget film will love it. more ›

Screening Alert: <i>Honeydripper</i> with John Sayles Q&A

Screening Alert: Honeydripper with John Sayles Q&A

John Sayles has enjoyed one of the more respected careers in film over the last twenty-five years. By some estimates, he is the king of the uncredited re-write and has used the large fees he's garnered as a script doctor to further his own career as a writer-director. His resume is studded with several superb pictures (Sunshine State, Passion Fish, Eight Men Out, The Brother from Another Planet) and one masterpiece (Lone Star). Tonight at the Aero Theater, Sayles unspools his latest, . more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Best Horror Film of the Year?

Weekend Movie Guide: Best Horror Film of the Year?

The list is a little long this week since I'm including the Christmas Day openers. Having already raved about yesterday, I'll lead off with what some are calling the best horror film of the year, The Orphanage. For any horror fan who's tired of torture porn and bad Japanese re-makes, this is the movie for you. Grim and spare, it's a horror film for adults and Spain's foreign-language entrant for next year's Oscars. more ›

Movies To Look Forward to in 2008

Movies To Look Forward to in 2008

Let's face it, 2007 was a mediocre year for movies. Although there are still a couple months left for 2007 to prove it's cinema value, overall it was a disappointing year. Sure Hollywood gave us "300", "Zodiac", and "Once", but we also got "The Number 23", "Norbit", and "Code Name: The Cleaner". So I have my eyes set on 2008, which seems to have a wonderful slate of features for us to see at... more ›
