Kings Power Play Win Comes with Some Controversy

Kings Power Play Win Comes with Some Controversy

That was as close to a walk-off in regulation for the Kings in their 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. As the final seconds were ticking off ready to send the game to the inevitable overtime period, Drew Doughty got the fortunate bounce during a power-play and shot the puck past Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford as the clock hit 0.3 remaining. more ›

Powerful Kings Lose to Dallas in a Shootout, Kopitar Injured

Powerful Kings Lose to Dallas in a Shootout, Kopitar Injured

The Kings lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Dallas Stars. After being down 2-0 in the first period to the Dallas Stars, the Kings buoyed by three power-play goals had taken a 4-3 lead midway through the third period. Yes, you read that correctly: three power-play goals for the first time since March 8, 2010 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

Dallas Stars defeat LA Kings 3-2 (OT). After withstanding a Dallas flurry at the start of the second period, the Kings scored twice in just over 30 seconds: Mike Richards extending his career-high five-game goal streak and Kevin Westgarth with his first career goal. The last King to have a five-game scoring streak was Dustin Brown who had a six-game streak from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, 2009. But with 20 seconds from a win, Loui Eriksson scored off of a neutral zone faceoff win to send the game to overtime. Steve Ott gave the Stars the overtime win. more ›

Johnson Dramatics, Quick Records All in a Night for Kings

Johnson Dramatics, Quick Records All in a Night for Kings

Last season in their 12th game of the season, the Kings played perhaps their best-played game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a 1-0 battle with a Justin Williams goal scored in the sixth minute of the final period. It was a game of hard hits, good puck movement, great goaltending, good defense. That was the point where the Kings potentially doing damage in the playoffs went from rhetoric to an actual probability. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks White Dwarf Stars

LAst Night's Action: Ducks White Dwarf Stars

Anaheim Ducks defeat Dallas Stars 4-3 (OT). The Ducks trailed 3-2 with seven seconds left in the game which was disappointing since a turnover in the blue line of the Stars’ zone led to the go-ahead goal 13:21 in the third. But the Ducks pulled goalie Ray Emery and at that point, 19:53 in the third, their oldest player Teemu Selanne sent the game to overtime. Standing in the left circle away from all the activity in front of the net, Selanne saw the puck head his way and snapped it past Kari Lehtonen. Then at 1:42 in overtime the Ducks’ youngest player Cam Fowler initiated a rush from the Ducks’ zone, dished the puck over to Bobby Ryan and got it back for the winning goal. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clips Snip 'Cats

LAst Night's Action: Clips Snip 'Cats

LA Clippers defeat Charlotte Bobcats 92-87. It was a close game, but the Clippers emerged and held on to a lead in the waning minutes. Blake Griffin and Mo Williams led the Clips with 17 points while Griffin added 15 rebounds. Chris Kaman had a double-double off the bench with 16 points and ten assists while point guard Eric Bledsoe had 13 points from the bench. more ›

Kings Power-less Against Stars

Kings Power-less Against Stars

The Kings power-play was awful. That +1 was the shorthanded burst from Jamie Benn stealing Drew Doughty’s pass to Jarret Stoll, taking it down the ice and shooting it past goaltender Jonathan Bernier at 5:20 in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. What had been a pretty listless game by the Stars up to that point helped turn the tide to lead them to a 4-3 overtime win over the Kings. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Outshoot Bucks

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Outshoot Bucks

LA Lakers defeat Milwaukee Bucks 118-107. Defense? The Lakers showed they weren’t all that interested in defense making it look like they would need another last-second Kobe Bryant jumper in overtime to beat the Bucks at the Bradley Center as was the case on Dec. 16, 2009. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Break Lawler's Law

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Break Lawler's Law

Detroit Pistons defeat LA Clippers 113-107 (OT). Lawler’s Law failed. Thank to Rasual Butler’s three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining in regulation, the Clippers took a 102-99 lead. But a Ryan Gomes missed free throw and an Eric Gordon turnover allowed the Pistons to send the game to overtime where they prevailed 113-107. more ›

LAst Night's Action: The Lakers Finally Lose

LAst Night's Action: The Lakers Finally Lose

Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 118-112. It’s never easy for the Lakers in Denver during the regular season, and this game was no exception. The Lakers despite having a slim lead throughout a good chunk of the game could not shut down Carmelo Anthony as the Nuggets hand the Lakers their first loss of the season. more ›

Kings Fight To a 3-1 Victory over Dallas

Kings Fight To a 3-1 Victory over Dallas

It wasn’t the prettiest game the Kings have played this season, but it was good enough to keep the Kings undefeated at home in their 3-1 victory of division rival, and sometime sparring mates as evidenced by this game, Dallas Stars. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Texas Got Messed

LAst Night's Action: Texas Got Messed

LA Kings defeat Dallas Stars 5-2. With the return of Drew Doughty pushed back further thanks to “concussion-like symptoms,” defenseman Jack Johnson has picked up the slack making an imprint this game with three assists. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Show Class and Sass

LA Lakers defeat Houston Rockets 112-110. The Lakers schooled the rest of the league on how to celebrate a championship. The players got on the microphone and introduced one another culminating with Kobe Bryant introducing Owner Dr. Jerry Buss before the unveiling of the championship banner. The only blemish was the omission of Rasheed Hazzard (son of Walt). However there was no hype, only the requisite amount of pomp, the unveiling of the banner then the game - exactly the way it should be. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Make It Interesting in Denver

LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Make It Interesting in Denver

Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 98-96. In hockey terms, Kobe Bryant was a healthy scratch for the Lakers. In media terms, TNT was crying. As for Laker fans, it almost turned out well. The Lakers climbed back from a 15 point deficit in the... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Stung By Hornets Point Guards

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Stung By Hornets Point Guards

New Orleans Hornets defeat LA Lakers 108-100. Well the Lakers interrupted one hell of a high speed chase for this nonsense. It was too much Chris Paul and Darren Collison that once again exposed the Lakers inability to defend quick point guards. Meanwhile on the offensive end instead of trying to dictate play by attacking the paint, they settled for shooting threes ineffectively at a 24% clip. Pau Gasol in no way can be blamed for the loss tying a career high in rebounds with 22 while scoring 26 points. Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 31 points. But like I said it was too much Paul (15 points, 13 assists) and Collison (17 points). This should be an infuriating loss, but the more the Lakers play indifferently the more I feel indifferent about them. If they feel content about being 2-2 on this road trip, so be it. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Rebound While Kings Plummet

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Rebound While Kings Plummet

LA Lakers defeat Houston Rockets 109-101. The Lakers looked just as stale as they did Friday night against Oklahoma City allowing the Rockets to score 34 points in the first quarter for a seven point deficit. However unlike the Thunder game, the Lakers found their defense and completely shut down the Rockets going on a 24-2 run in the second quarter and holding them to 11 points for a 17 point advantage going into the half. more ›

Kings Flop On the Ice to Visiting Stars

Kings Flop On the Ice to Visiting Stars

The Kings are starting to get into a lot of trouble. The inability to sustain any sort of intensity and discipline killed the Kings in their 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars. “We didn’t have any enthusiasm, any energy,” captain Dustin Brown said. “It’s disappointing coming after a day off.” The Kings seemed to look all right in the first period when they held the Stars to seven shots on goal. Michal Handzus got a power play goal to put the Kings up 1-0 15:52 in the first period. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get By Suns

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get By Suns

LA Lakers defeat Phoenix Suns 102-96. After leading by seven points at the half, the Lakers extended their lead to 15 points. Treating the paint as if it were filled with landmines, the Lakers clanged jump shot after jump shot while Steve Nash then kicked it in full gear for the Suns who went on an 11-2 run to end the third period to bring the game within four. The Suns would eventually take the lead just under three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Lakers then decided that attacking the paint might be a good idea. After not going to the charity stripe at all in the third quarter, the Lakers were awarded with ten shots at the free throw line. Two of those came via technical fouls when Suns coach Alvin Gentry went crazy when a flagrant foul was not called on Pau Gasol when he fouled Louis Amundson. Kobe Bryant had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds while the Suns Amare Stoudemire led all scorers with 29 points and 16 rebounds. Ron Artest got his shot going getting 15 points while Lamar Odom had four points on 2-for-8 shooting. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Show No Rust from Olympic Break

LAst Night's Action: Kings Show No Rust from Olympic Break

LA Kings defeat Dallas Stars 5-1. Before the Olympic break the Kings were 10-1-1. Any fear of the momentum going away was unfounded as goalie Jonathan Quick worked off his own rust to keep the Kings marching into the playoff. The Stars didn’t ease him into things getting off seven shots on goal in the first period... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Hold On to Beat Sens

LAst Night's Action: Kings Hold On to Beat Sens

LA Kings defeat Ottawa Senators 6-3. It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Kings persevered to beat the Sens. Randy Jones scored the opening goal for the Kings 42 seconds into the game, but the Sens would control most of the game in the first period. But at the end of the period, Wayne Simmonds was tripped on the way to the goal which gave him a penalty shot which he converted for the 2-1 lead. The Kings would go on to take a 3-1 lead early in the second period, but the Senators rallied back to tie the game at 3-3. Scoring chances at the end of the game inflated the score for the Kings, but a win is a win especially when you’re not playing your best. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Unravel Again

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Unravel Again

Charlotte Bobcats defeat LA Lakers 94-84. I was afraid of this game knowing the Laker's troubles with the Bobcats. In fact the Lakers are only 6-8 against the Bobcats. The Lakers shot an abysmal 39% on a team where no one performed well. In fact they outshot the Bobcats 97-68. The Bobcats meanwhile become only the second team to beat the Lakers twice and are within one game of a playoff spot in the East. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Crush Undermanned Pistons

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Crush Undermanned Pistons

LA Lakers defeat Detroit Pistons 92-77. The last time the Lakers won a game at the Palace of Auburn Hills it was January 8, 2002. The Lakers won the last of their three-peat championships that season. On Thursday night the Lakers faced a Pistons team that was down Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace and beat them to submission. Well except for that second quarter when the Pistons bench went on a 15-0 run against the Lakers bench thanks to turnovers and bad shooting. But the Lakers would come storming back in the second half using a 20-0 run to take back control. Kobe Bryant notched 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while Derek Fisher added 15 points and 12 points each for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. It was so bad that in the fourth quarter Kobe was serenaded with MVP chants in Detroit. more ›

LAst Night's Action: A Tale of Three Runs

LAst Night's Action: A Tale of Three Runs

Indiana Pacers defeat LA Lakers 118-117. The Lakers outscored the Pacers in the first three quarters. They led by 16 points a minute into the fourth quarter. Then the Pacers went on a scoring run that was capped off by a Troy Murphy put-back off of a miss right before the buzzer went off in the fourth that gave the Pacers the one-point victory. Despite being 7-10 the Pacers also handed the Celtics a 16-point defeat in their second game of the season. The Lakers meanwhile suffer only their second loss of the season and face Philadelphia tonight. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Fight for a Victory

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Fight for a Victory

LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 106-99. The Lakers should have lost this game. They were outrebounded 58-48 by the Mavericks and lost the three-point shooting battle going 15.4% compared to the Mavericks 27.3%. But the Lakers defense came alive in the second half outscoring the Mavs 52-39. The second team anchored by Trevor Ariza on defense and a +/- differential of +16 (the Lakers scored 16 more points than the Mavs when Ariza was on the floor). Last season the Lakers would have lost this game. But this season, well you know. The Lakers are now 6-0 along with the surprising Atlanta Hawks and will play the second game of the back-to-back at New Orleans Hornets tonight. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Pau Notches His First Playoff Victory

LAst Night's Action: Pau Notches His First Playoff Victory

LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 128-114. Technicals and flagrants and ejections oh my! Nugget's JR Smith got a flagrant foul and four players received technicals: the Laker's Kobe Bryant and the Nugget's Kenyon Martin, Anthony Carter and a double-T for Allen Iverson who was summarily ejected. Pau Gasol in his first ever playoff victory led all scorers with 36 points and Jordan Farmar closed out a 39-22 third quarter with his now routine last second three. Maybe the Nuggets' bus catching fire on the way to Staples Center affected them somehow. Screw the defense, this is going to be a fun series to watch. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Get Roasted

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Get Roasted

Dallas Stars defeat Anaheim Ducks 3-1. The Ducks continued to be outplayed by the Stars as goalie Marty Turco came within seven seconds of shutting out the Ducks. Duck's center Brian Sutherby, who had scored only one goal early on in the season, thought he had tied the game in the second period but was called off after a video review for kicking the puck in the net. Down three games to one, the Ducks now have to take care of business at home tonight to avoid being the fourth consecutive reigning Stanley Cup Champion to not make the second round of the playoffs. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers are Number 1

LAst Night's Action: Lakers are Number 1

LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 124-101. No tacos for the fans, but joy still rang out with the Lakers clinching the #1 seed in the Western Conference for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. If anyone predicted this 57-25 season after the chaos of last summer that simmered through training camp, they are liars. It's amazing what the emergence of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, the bench and the Pau Gasol heist can do to a team. The Lakers now face either the Denver Nuggets or the Dallas Mavericks in the first round. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodger Offense Located

LAst Night's Action: Dodger Offense Located

LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 11-1. The Dodgers continue to win against San Diego pitchers not named Peavy. For what seems like the first time this season, the Dodgers were able to consistently string hits together to get more than one run to score in an inning. Padres started Chris Young couldn't get ahead of any hitter, and Derek Lowe did what he does best: the sinker to induce ground outs retiring 20 of his last 21 hitters. Hopefully the Dodgers can get something going from this. more ›

LAst Night's Action: The Stars Shone Bright

LAst Night's Action: The Stars Shone Bright

Dallas Stars defeat Anaheim Ducks 4-0. 11 penalties by the Ducks, excellent penalty killing by the Stars. That's the story of the game. The Stars score all four goals during the power play, and the Ducks just couldn't get anything going. The Ducks only had 23 shots-on-goal compared to the 37 by the Stars. This was not the way the Ducks wanted to start their defense of the Stanley Cup. more ›
