Tonight In Rock: Puscifer, Deftones, Asher Roth, Cut Chemist

Tonight A Perfect Circle front man Maynard James Keenan will be concluding a two-night stint at Club Nokia in Downtown under the pseudonym Puscifer. The second and final date of Bamboozle Left Festival, which touts a slew of heavy-handed rockers like Deftones, Thrice and Taking Back Sunday, will be taking place at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. And, lastly, Pennsylvania-bred rapper Asher Roth will be headlining the Key Club. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo later on in the evening to catch this week's edition of Part Time Punks, which features LA's legendary turntablist Cut Chemist.

Mulatu Astatke @ The Luckman Fine Arts Complex 2-01-09

On Sunday night Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke performed two engaging sets at the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles. Mulatu Astatke, along with opening DJ sets from Egon, Quantic and Cut Chemist, is the first performer of the Timeless composer and arranger series at the Luckman. The four-part Timeless series is co-presented by VTech and Mochilla with dates into April this year.

In an e-mail early, early, early this morning, McCabe's announced something unexpected: The Swell Season will be playing tomorrow night in the guitar shop's intimate performance space. You may not recognize the band's name, but you know them as Irish singer Glen Hansard and Czech pianist Marketa Irglova from the movie Once. The gig got booked serendipitously yesterday when Glen brought his guitar into the shop for repair. Of course, the bad news here is that tickets sold out quickly, probably before the light of day hit. Tonight, McCabe's presents Jackshit, who we interviewed here on LAist last August.

The Pogues were so bad last night at the Wiltern that we left early and can't really recommend them tonight, but we will list them because, we'll they're the Pogues. The problem was Shane was so drunk/fucked-up/brain damaged that it was sad. LAist are HUGE Pogues fans. Over the last three days we've listed them three times and posted two different videos. Which is what made last night's show so heartbreaking. It was like watching Ozzy on that MTV show when he was at his lowest. See anything else.

Mon 5/22 - Architecture in Helsinki / Tussle @ Troubadour (Sold Out) –Melbourne, Australia’s Architecture in Helsinki are an eight piece indie band. Pitchfork gave their last album an 8.8 and compared them to Fiery Furnaces. They seem like really nice kids and their fanbase keeps growing everytime they play LA. San Francisco’s Tussle makes instrumental dub-dance-indie-electronic music. Download Tussle’s “DiscoD'oro - Munk Remix

We've listened to his J Dilla tribute mix at least 10 times since James Yancey died in February and now we have to say goodbye to him as well? We're not ready to let go of an integral part of The Root Down and one of our favorite turntablists at Fusicology events. Tarek Captan aka DJ Dusk was killed Saturday night by a drunk driver. He was 31.
