FYF 2010

             + 62 more

Scorching heat and long line issues aside (shouldn't we be used to this for festivals anyway?), our friends at FYF did not disappoint in 2010. With an amazing lineup featuring an indie rock dream roster, the entire day was a chaotic party of three stages, VIP tents, food trucks, Sailor Jerry rum drinks, and all the bands you could want to see. Per usual, the photo pits were packed, the fans were rabid, and the beer was cold. Highlights included Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti killing "Round and Round" while the entire crowd sang back-up, Big Freedia with her Azz (literally) Everywhere, and !!! being !!!, short-shorts and all. A day so good it might just hold us over until FYF's next big show at SXSW 2011. more ›

FYF Fest w/ Let's Wrestle, The Growlers, The Blow, Cults, Screaming Females, Warpaint, Best Coast, and Thee Oh Sees, 9/4/10

             + 22 more

Earlier this month, the seventh annual FYF Fest took place at the LA State Historic Park near Chinatown, and while the numbers -- 37 bands across three stages with 17 comedians and an estimated 20,000 attendees -- are impressive, the consensus among many was how disorganized the event was, as exemplified by tweets like "FYF = fuck you fans fest," "Almost 3 hours to get into @FYFFEST = FAIL," "@FYFFEST is like a hipster concentration camp," "Hey @fyffest maybe you wouldn't run out of water if you let us bring some inside. It's only 95 degrees. Jus sayin'," and "Fuck lines fest more like @FYFFEST." more ›

Tonight In Rock: Maps & Atlases, Ferraby Lionheart, The Sea Of Cortez, Hands

Tonight local folk troubadour Ferraby Lionheart (LAist Interview, Review) will be gracing the Hammer Museum with none other than local indie rock act Voxhaul Broadcast for this week's edition of 'Also I Like To Rock.' LA-based indie rock quintet the Sea of Cortez, who are touring in anticipation of their yet-to-be-released studio debut, 2010's Make It Sound, are poised to take on Silver Lake Lounge. And, lastly, local experimental indie pop quartet Hands will be taking on the Atwater Village Theater with electro pop trio Twin Falcons. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Bootleg Theater to catch Chicagoan indie rock quartet Maps & Atlases, who will be ringing in their Barsuk-released debut studio-album—2010's Perch Patchwork. LAist favorites, NY-based retro 60s pop duo Cults are slated to kick things off. more ›

Tonight In Rock: MGMT, The Swell Season, Drink Up Buttercup, Cults

Tonight Brooklyn-based neo-psych rockers MGMT will be headlining the Fox Theater Pomona with NY-based electro-funk act Francis and the Lights. the Swell Season, an indie folk duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová, are poised to take on the Hollywood Bowl with none other than Portland-based alt-country duo She & Him (LAist Review), or rather Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, and local indie pop duo the Bird and the Bee (LAist Review, #2). And, lastly, Philadelphia's own jangly pop indie rock quartet Drink Up Buttercup will be headlining Spaceland, ringing in their latest tour de force—2010's Born And Thrown On A Hook. But we strongly suggest heading over to Sixth Street Warehouse to catch NY-based retro 60s pop duo Cults, who will be making their debut appearance here in LA. LAist favorites, local indie pop quartet Superhumanoids, who recently rung in their latest EP, 2010's Urgency, are slated to perform as well. more ›

Film Calendar: Cult Classics, Real Classics & Pirates

A fun bit of trivia for film snobs & martial arts fans: Jackie Chan's Supercop was originally released on laserdisc by the prestigious Criterion Collection. The Nuart pays tribute to this cinematic masterwork with a midnight screening on Friday. The New Beverly features fellow Criterion alum, Krysztof Kieslowski, with two out of Three Colors, and the Aero has yet another with a Citizen Kane replay. For Overlooked Auteurs, visit the Cinefamily for a deadly double featuring director Ted Kotcheff (who? Mr. Rambo: First Blood & Weekend At Bernie's, that's who!). more ›
