We are counting down to the madness. One of the most exciting days in sports and the least productive work days on the calendar, the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championships, is less than 24 hours away.

CSUN Parking: $125. Street Parking: Priceless.

"Who in their right mind would pay 125.00/semester to spend hours stalking/fighting for parking spaces when you could arrive 15 minutes early, easily park a few blocks away, and walk?" ~ San Fernando Valley Yelp Review of the Day by Erin H. from the blog News Me Baby.

In addition to the closures of several local freeways, there are other closures and stoppages of services due to the Sayre Fire that is burning in the Northeastern San Fernando Valley and in the Newhall Pass. Currently Metrolink is reporting that they have canceled all service on their Antelope Valley Line until further notice (Metrolink Twitter). Furthermore, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) has announced the cancellation of all Saturday classes on their campus, and that "individuals planning to attend scheduled events on campus should check directly with event sponsors."

"Esha Momeni, the 28-year-old grad student that was arrested last month in Iran, has been released by the Iranian government after 25 days in jail," reports CSUN's campus newspaper, the Daily Sundial. Momeni, who was in Iran working on a part of her Master's thesis on women’s issues there, is "is being charged with 'propagandizing against the regime,'" according to professor and chair of Gender & Women's Studies Dr. Nayereh Tohidi. Momeni is expected to return to the US next week. The Daily News reports that "Hassan Hussein, a close friends of Momeni's, said she was freed on bail after her family surrendered the deed to their home to Iranian authorities."

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, a 22-year-old female California State University Northridge student was hit and launched 40 feet from a crosswalk she was walking across. She suffered severe injuries and is listed in critical condition. The LAPD has few clues about the incident, which took place at Reseda Boulevard and Superior Street near campus. What they do know is that the suspect car is possibly a Toyota or Lexus traveling northbound. If anyone knows any information they can report it here.

The Santa Ana winds will worsen over the next few hours, then finally mellow out around noon. Northridge View at the 11800 block of Reseda is now under mandatory evacuation as the fire licks at the road. Edelston Park has been completely destroyed. In spite of the proximity of the fire, Cal State Northridge will be open today. The 118 West was just reopened.

With the air and traffic, this was bound to happen. From CSUN's press office: "Cal State Northridge officials have cancelled afternoon and evening classes for Monday, Oct. 13, because of concerns about air quality and freeway closures due to the fires in the northeast San Fernando Valley. University offices, the library and bookstore will remain open." For complete coverage, follow our "wildfire" tag by clicking here.

A situation like this, occurred several times over the past year, according to the LAPD: "In March 2007, a student at California State University Northridge (CSUN) was approached by a suspect who asked the victim to cash a check at his bank. In exchange for his efforts, he would be given several hundred dollars. Unfortunately, the he was unaware the check was forged. Several days later, a hold was placed on his account to cover the bank loss." In many of the cases, victims said handguns were used to intimidate them into taking part in the crimes, which spread to both Valley and Pierce colleges in the past few months. Piecing together clues from the crimes, detectives arrested three suspects in their twenties on Monday, but more are being sought. Police are also still looking for other people who may have been victims of this crime ring.

Every so often when we feel so inspired to do so, we feature a photo from a photographer in the LAist Flickr Pool. It's another way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention that they deserve. Everyone knows Santa Monica College has a radio station (KCRW 89.9). And CSUN (KCSN 88.5) and CSULB (KJAZZ 88.1) too. Even Pasadena City College (KPCC 89.3) and USC (KUSC 91.5) have theirs. Where is UCLA's?...

"... the kids who join the Greek organizations are very spirited. They are very much involved with all aspects of college life. They run for office and they are big philanthropists," a California State University Northridge (CSUN) student told the Daily News in an article about the city of Los Angeles ordering members of two off-campus CSUN fraternity houses, Zeta Beta Tau and Pi Kappa Alpha, to shut down. Hrmmm, if these students are...

Northridge has become famous for Cal State University Northridge, and infamous for the Northridge quake. In reality, the earthquake's epicenter was beneath Reseda. Although the San Fernando Valley is very particular about each neighborhood's boundaries, the history of one area sometimes bleeds over into the next. It would be easy to paint the Valley with a single brush. But that would be a gross oversimplification. What makes Northridge stand out from its neighbors? Its...

Oh Mel, oh Mel, oh Mel. What the fuck is your problem, you crotchety man? They sent your derelict ancestors to Australia for a reason, but apparently yours forgot to pack soap. At a late-night screening at Cal State Northridge Thursday, Alicia Estrada, assistant professor of Latin American Studies at CSUN, pressed Mr. Mel Gibson on what she felt was an inaccurate portrayal of Mayan culture in his latest bloody flick, Apocalypto. She reportedly wondered...

KCSN 88.5 FM, the radio station run out of California State University, Northridge (CSUN), is actually not classical station 24/7 like K-Mozart was or KUSC is. The Valley based station runs classical from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. surrounded by BBC Radio in the early mornings and an eclectic mix of music including folk, roots, musicals, blues and Hawaiian at night and on the weekends. KZMT always felt a bit stodgy and KUSC feels...
