Chrissie Hynde is so cool, she can get away with talking to her audience like a cranky old man without losing their affection. more ›

CSS, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head @ The Echoplex, 12/9

The Echoplex was hit by a tidal wave of audio marshmallow fluff last Thursday. By the time I arrived, the air was sticky with it. Natalie Portman's Shaved Head was on stage. You want a band that can provoke a reaction just by naming things, it's this one. I mean their album is called Glistening Pleasure for God's sake. Who wouldn't want to own Glistening Pleasure? more ›

Tonight In Rock: CSS, Murs, Miranda Lee Richards, Low vs Diamond

Tonight In Rock: CSS, Murs, Miranda Lee Richards, Low vs Diamond

Tonight Brazilian electro pop sensation CSS will be stopping through the Echoplex with Portland-based goobers Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. LA local Murs (LAist Interview) is poised to flow at the El Rey Theatre. Singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards will be gracing the stage at the Hotel Café. The Watkins Family (LAist Review) is slated to put on a special Christmas edition of their Family Hour at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, the gruff indie rock outfit known as Low vs Diamond (LAist Review) will be letting loose at the Troubadour with their Seattle friends Barcelona. But considering the "drastic" change in climate and the nature of the season, we strongly suggest heading over to Pershing Square for Spaceland On Ice. What better way to ring in the winter than with LA's own bluesy rock duo Rumspringa (LAist Review), who will be performing for free! more ›

Tonight In Rock: The Pretenders, Pop Levi, Longwave, Daedelus

Tonight In Rock: The Pretenders, Pop Levi, Longwave, Daedelus

Tonight LA has its fair share of shows. Club Nokia in Downtown will play host to Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, who will be accompanied by prominent indie rockers like Bloc Party (LAist Review, #2), CSS and Black Kids. LA locals Obi Best (LAist Review), a pop songstress who sings back-up vocals for the Bird and the Bee, and El Ten Eleven (LAist Review), a purely instrumental duo, are slated to perform at the Hotel Café. NY-based shoegazers Longwave will be rocking out at the Troubadour, ushering in their first record in over three years. And, lastly, electronic mastermind Daedelus is headlining the 10th Beat Invitational at the Airliner. But we strongly suggest seeing English psych-pop singer-songwriter Pop Levi (LAist Review), who will be sauntering onstage with bravado at Spaceland. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Okkervil River, The Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, The Bird and the Bee

Tonight In Rock: Okkervil River, The Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, The Bird and the Bee

Tonight two lucky dogs will be in attendance at the Raconteurs show thanks to LAist. And if those lucky dogs aren't you, then might we suggest some other options? Austin-based Okkervil River will be rolling through the Henry Fonda Music Box with local favorites Sea Wolf. Zykos, another exemplary Austin act that we are quite fond of, is slated to open as well. Bordello in Downtown will be hosting a superb bill of LA's finest, including Echo Park's EXITMUSIC. And tonight will be the final night of a three-night run featuring Brazilian pop sensation CSS at the Mayan. But, all things considered, the Barack Obama-rama Fundraiser at Spaceland takes the cake. The wondrous female-fronted lineup of predominantly electronic acts (Lady Tigra, the Bird and the Bee and Electrocute) will be belting out notes in support of the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee. As the relatively newfangled saying goes: Love your momma, vote Obama. more ›

Hiring a Web Designer: To Div & Sty with CSS

Hiring a Web Designer: To Div & Sty with CSS

Everyone in LA needs a website right? Just another tool of many to self promote your whatevers. Since we work on the web, all our friends ask if their web designer is the one for them? So instead of giving each of them a personal coaching session, we'll just post it here for your fun and their reference. more ›
