SXSW 2010 Through Our Lens: Day Three

             + 22 more

SXSW Saturday was a slow descent into Hell GWAR. As LAist's Molly Bergen probably mentioned, the weather dropped about 30 degrees from the night prior, startling the hung-over 90% of us that were completely unprepared clothing-wise. (Not like I own a truly warm coat, anyhow). more ›

FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

At the end of Fucked Up’s powerful, frenetic set, frontman Pink Eyes looks out at the crowd and says something along the lines of “You can say we played the Hipster Woodstock. You can say we play punk rock. One thing I know, my hips are in a state of shock.” It’s actually a fitting summary of last Saturday’s FYF festival - whose crowd is a healthy cross-section of young hipsters, and aging punk rockers with bad hips. I’m not entirely sure of the significance, but there seems to be a poetic irony in the proliferation of teenagers in Black Flag T-shirts and forty-somethings in Vivian Girls T-shirts. more ›

Cold War Kids and Crystal Antlers @ Orpheum Theater, 3/27/09

             + 1 more

Straining my eyes in the gloom of the Orpheum Theater last Friday, I came to the astonishing conclusion that the guitars that the Crystal Antlers were holding must be purely decorative. Pulverized by the ferocious drumming, heavy bass, and the lead singer's screaming, the guitars faded to a whimper. "They sound like they've got a pillow over them," my friend remarked, "They're all drums and cymbals." Truer words were never spoken. Although I kind of wish the pillow had been over the lead singer's mouth. Piercing your audience's eardrums with wails of passion are never the way to go, sir. With the exception of their song Andrew in which they slowed down and allowed for the interesting piano chords and guitar licks to actually emerge, most of the Crystal Antlers' show was muffled in a blanket of drumming and screams. more ›

And, lastly, the one-woman army, otherwise known as Theresa Andersson (LAist Interview, Review), will be gracing the Hotel Café. But we strongly suggest checking into Spaceland, where Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter Sara Lov will be stopping through for the penultimate date of her month-long residency. LAist favorite Willoughby (LAist Review, #2) is slated to open. more ›

And, lastly, local indie rockers the Henry Clay People and the Happy Hollows will be coming through Spaceland. But from the bevy of options we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to party with the Blood Arm. The rollicking quartet will surely kick the New Year off with a bang. more ›
