"They say nobody walks in LA, but many people cross Sunset Blvd. at Portia everyday. This new signalized crosswalk will make it safer for them when they do," Council President Eric Garcetti said today at a news conference introducing Echo Park's new pedestrian friendly feature.

Sunset Blvd. Gets a New Pedestrian Crosswalk in Echo Park

On Monday, a new pedestrian crosswalk with a flashing overhead yellow light will be debuted on Sunset Boulevard at Portia Street. In a recent citywide study to find where higher than average pedestrian accidents occur, this one was identified and pushed for by the city's volunteer citizen Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The crosswalk is currently installed, but the flashing lights will be turned on Monday morning when Councilman Eric Garcetti and others flip the switch.

Police to Write More Tickets on Ventura Blvd.

When LAPD Senior Lead Officer George Aguilar responded to an accident earlier this month on Ventura Blvd., he experienced first hand how unsafe the Valley's popular artery is for pedestrians. Even with a police car next to him, he felt like a "bowling pin." Aguilar, whose area covers most of Sherman Oaks between the 101 Freeway and Mulholland Drive, announced last night at a monthly neighborhood watch meeting that he's upping the traffic enforcement along the street, including ticketing cars that don't yield to pedestrians on marked crosswalks. So you've been warned, come to Sherman Oaks and speed or blow off peds, they're looking for you.

Not only has the city made it realistically hard to park and take advantage of the burgeoning theatre district by limiting parking to two hours at night, they are now proposing to take away a crosswalk at a vital intersection that connects dense housing to commercial businesses. Is this redevelopment gone backwards?

Even going 10 MPH can be deadly. A supposedly distracted mother who just dropped off her own child to Toll Middle School in Glendale hit an 11-year-old girl as she drove through a marked crosswalk yesterday morning. Vehicles going in the other direction had yielded for the children, according to TV news reports. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with police. She was let go, but her Nissan Pathfinder was taken by investigators.

Although Republican Presidential nominee John McCain has no plan for pedestrians that we know of, he definitely has some unintended subliminal messages around Los Angeles crosswalks thanks to a company that the city uses at crossings. LAist reader Jon Zack noticed these while at Highland and Franklin in Hollywood and exclaimed "say it ain't so!"

A crosswalk at Hoover and 28th has seen two injuries over the past few weeks as the fall semester begins. Drivers say the students pop out of no where at the dark crosswalk and others are saying the usual crosswalks-are-not-100%-safe spiel. Several hit-and-runs with parked cars were reported over the weekend near Portland and 28th. At least one driver was caught, but several more were reported according to the Daily Trojan.

Last Friday night in Santa Monica, bicyclists-turned-temporary-pedestrians gathered and protested what they believe is harassment from the city towards monthly Critical Mass bicycles rides. At their latest ride on August 1st, 14 police officers were deployed to monitor the ride resulting in at least nine citations (unofficial counts totaled up to 14).

If you felt your neighborhood should deserve one of those new scramble crosswalks, which allows for diagonal crossing at intersections (see a video example here), there's more than just the one in Westwood Village announced the other day (and the older one near USC). Here's the list of ten scramble crosswalks planned across the city, thanks to Steve Hymon at the Bottleneck Blog:

We have no scientific proof that this is the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world, but it definitely could be a contender.

Come Thursday, UCLA folk and others will have a new way of crossing the street at Le Conte and Westwood. It's called a scramble crosswalk and is currently in use in Pasadena, Beverly Hills and at Hoover and Jefferson near USC. It's where pedestrians can cross the street from all four corners at the same light as well as diagonally from opposite ends, according to a story posted on UCLA Today Online.

Last December, I embarked on a mission to find a solution to a problem in my immediate neighborhood. Trying to cross Moorpark St. on foot (or left turns in a car) during rush hour is a nightmare. There is just too much constant flow and you really have to have a brave moment to cross at the unmarked crosswalk because as we all know, there is about .001% of drivers in the city who...

It's exasperating enough when you're trying to cross the street and someone trying to make a right turn on red is hugging the corner blocking your way on a walk signal. This picture is of a guy completely blocking the whole pedestrian crosswalk. He was the first car to pull up at the red light during the walk signal. Legally, since he drove past the limit line during a red light, this is considered...
