California's hands-free cell phone went into effect two years ago, but the latest statistics from the California Highway Patrol show that there is much room for improvement. In the last two years, there have been 1,200 collisions statewide where "a contributing factor was inattention by the driver due to cell phone usage," said the department.

Their report concluded that incidents were up, citing the number of rear-end crashes when drivers stopped earlier than expected at yellow lights. But that report was faulty, in our opinion, ignoring the fact that red light cameras are not to blame, but people who tailgating are.

Cops Plan to Run DUI Checkpoint in Van Nuys Tomorrow Night
If your Saturday evening plans have you a) drinking and b) traveling in or through Van Nuys, a word to the wise via the Daily News: "Cops will be out in force tomorrow night in Van Nuys doing a sobriety checkpoint from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday to cut the number of DUI-related traffic collisions." The location of the checkpoint has not been revealed, but the reasoning is as clear as a shot glass brimming with Ketel One--there have been more than 700 hit and run incidents in the area so far this year, and approximately 100 car crashes that have been alcohol related. Sure, it's not as glamorous as boozing and cruising Sherman Way, but may we suggest the Orange Line? Or at least a designated driver!
