Listen to the interview here: Deborah Harry is on her way to LA to play the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater tomorrow, Friday the 7th. She's got her first new solo album in fourteen years out, Necessary Evil, and you can hear some samples of it at her MySpace. Unfortunately our conversation sounds like I'm contacting her by sat-phone somewhere in Tibet but these are the days of multiline patch-ins so it couldn't......

As I've said before, I hate contests. But in life everything is negotiable, and if a contest is so good that I can't pass up, I will pass it along to you. And this one is a good one. We have two tickets to see the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, perform in the cozy confines of the Joint at the Hard Rock in beautiful Las Vegas on November 24th with special guest Rob......

Last Friday night at the Roxy, Paper Magazine treated attendees to a raucous tournament-to-the (almost) death, of guitarist vs. guitarist. We might all be playing Guitar Hero III but these guys were doing it for real. At least 8 guitarists competed head-to-head over several rounds - each guitarist had 90 seconds to shred their guts out with an optional rhythm section. A three judge panel would decide or resort to a 30 second face off......

I hate contests. Hate. LAist doesn't need them, lots of you don't appreciate them, it's not what big blogs do, and we have quietly become a big blog in this town. But I love Great Northern. Love. I first saw them at SXSW in March, and it's been nice to watch them get on the cover of the Weekly (and the drummer at that), and it's great to see them continue to make good......

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people migrate west to check out the West Hollywood/Santa Monica Blvd. Halloween Parade. Spanning from La Cienega Blvd. to Doheny Drive, the parade holds concerts, DJ sets, food vendors, and costume contests to the LA masses. While closing down Santa Monica blvd. may have screwed up everyone's commute last night, nothing compares to the pure elation of dressing incredibly skanky/scary/complicated. And don't worry, while you never know what......

Regina Spektor is playing the Grove in Anaheim on Halloween night, and because LAist loves you so so so much, we are going to give away a pair of tickets to one lucky lucky reader. What do you have to do to get the tix? Just leave us a......

This week has been a major downer. Seeing all of the suffering that people around us are going through as a result of these fires has been so disheartening, but at the same time, watching the displays of heroism of those fighting the fires and the resilience of those that refuse to be defeated by circumstance has helped restore our hope. In an effort to give you something to smile about, we’ve managed to......

Out of taverns and streetcorners in poor sections of Lisbon, the mournful music, that tells emotional tales of longing and loss, was born. Since then, fado has become Portugal's most famous music. With a Mozambican background and a love for the Portuguese fado singing, Mariza has become one of the world's most famous singers. Her first album went quadruple platinum. After a 2002 visit to Lisbon, famed architect and creator of the Walt Disney Concert......

Interpol the international police organization is everywhere (186 member countries), even though you never really take notice of them. So it’s fitting that the post-punk rock band of the same name has reached similar ubiquitous status, though dipping still ever so slightly below the radar. But now it appears the secret is out. Ever since Interpol announced the release of Our Love to Admire in May, they’ve been scouring the world, touring virtually non-stop.......

Yesterday we introduced a contest where several winners would receive two pairs of tickets to see the Robert Rodriguez zombie flick Planet Terror on Monday at the Mann's Chinese as part of Screamfest 07. Today we received word that each of the five winners will also win the Grindhouse Cherry action figure with removable leg/machine gun. We have a few pairs of tickets to a rare theatrical screening of the extended director’s cut of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror at Screamfest 07 this Monday at Mann's Chinese. In many people's minds Planet Terror was the better of the two Grindhouse films that came through town as a double-feature. Not even Quentin could compete with the zombies vs the hot one-legged babe w/ machine gun attachment. That babe, by the way, one......

While you were minding your own business, Mel Gibson, the LA Sheriff's Department were making sport of their power - arresting people and messing with gang members - simply to rack up points during in-house games and contests. One recent competition, described in an internal Sheriff's Department e-mail obtained by The Times, was called "Operation Any Booking." The object was to arrest as many people as possible within a specific 24-hour period. Other one-day......

Here in the land of stars, we see celebrities all the time. Whether out shopping at the Beverly Center, grabbing a bite at Canter’s, or filling up their ride at the gas station, famous people still have a regular life to live just as much as us “common folk,” even if some celebs view themselves as God's gift to mankind. It’s nice to see these performers outside the context of their onscreen/on-camera/behind-the-mic personas to see......

First of all, if you haven't seen the wonderful Into the Wild make plans to do so right away. It is one of the rare films that exploits the full power of cinema to transport you into another world and into the consciousness of another person (my enthusiastic review of it is here, tickets here, preview here, music here). After seeing it, I imagine you'll be ready to go on a little adventure of......

You’ve heard their tracks on the Blade movies, Zoolander, and Romeo Must Die. You know their work from the theme song to Bones. You’ve gamed to their music on Dance Dance Revolution and Gran Turismo 4. You’ve even listened to their radio show on Indie 103.1 (on Community Service on Friday nights 10 pm-midnight). But most notably, if you’re any kind of electronica fan, you’ve ardently followed their music for a decade since the......

Here at LAist, we cover many fantastic up and coming artists, as well as those who have toiled in obscurity for far too long, but continue to push new boundaries in music. A pretty damn good cd came out on Tuesday, the soundtrack to a film about Kurt Cobain called About a Son. The soundtrack has no music from Cobain or any of his bands, instead it's mostly music he was listening to from bands he was fans of. Very few bands had as much influence on Kurt than the Melvins, and very few bands had as much college radio street cred the years before Nirvana......

A.C. Newman and Blaine Thurier of Vancouver's finest supergroup, The New Pornographers, have issued a challenge: Translation: Make a better video than the band can, put it on YouTube, and win an iPhone... or something. Thank goodness the heat has beat a hasty retreat, because the Los Angeles County Fair begins today, with $1 admission until 5pm (it'll cost you $15 for an adult weekend ticket after that). There is an absolutely ridiculous variety of things to see, rides to enjoy, and most importantly, fried foods to eat: in fact, the theme for this year's food vendors is literally "deep-fried-everything-on-a-stick".
