The very popular (and rightly so) Museum of Tolerance is pissing off its neighbhors. Since the museum opened 14 years ago, it has steadily gained worldwide mentions. Yet, all the visitors that arrive because of those those international mentions have the residents who live near the museum in a tizzy, claiming their West LA neighborhood has become a nightmare of big bus traffic, blocked streets and stolen parking spaces.

Let's start over, shall we? Disney is investing $1.1 billion into California (Mis)adventure, the ghost town of an amusement park next to Disneyland. The Rose Queen for the Pasadena Rose Parade was announced this morning and her name is Dusty. We just love that name for a girl. Staring now, there is no excuse for anyone of any age to ever go "I don't get blogging." The world's oldest blogger celebrated her birthday this...

Pack your costumes a bit early this year and plan your 15 freeway adventures towards the LV, because Vegoose is coming soon!
These are the last days of summer. At least that's what they say on the news and in the marketplace. But here in Southern California, it only gets hotter as the days grow shorter. (At least the pools won't close just yet). But -- Holy Dallas Raines -- early this morning, with temps stuck in the mid-70s, we've got thunder and lightning! Unfortunately, the electricity in the air has no bearing on California's energy supply,...
Over the last few months, there have been rumblings about a possible Largo concert film. And 24 hours ago, a trailer popped up on YouTube that confirmed it all. Produced by Largo owner Mark Flanagan and Andrew van Baal, the film will be sure to highlight the intimate magic of this unassuming venue on Fairfax Ave. Featuring snippets of performances by Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Paul F. Tompkins, Zach Galifianakis, Nickel Creek, Grant Lee...

From time to time, LAist will take a look at the many book-to-film projects underway in Hollywood. We'll explore the books we love and why we're over-the-moon excited or just plain worried about the film projects that bear their name. When it was announced a few weeks ago that Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson were teaming up to make a film out of Alice Sebold's outstanding The Lovely Bones, we wondered if they'd make it...
Last Friday I was graciously invited to check out Ford's Filling Station's kick-off of their new "Ford's Play" snacktime menu. Billed as being "not quite lunch, not quite dinner" the comfy Culver City eatery has introduced a late afternoon menu boasting small bites and discount drinks. This Happy Hour-esque array of tasty offerings is available from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and certainly does take the edge off those late-in-the-daytime munchies with...
With news of more locations poised to serve, it's about damn time we did a little investigative journalism. Pinkberry: Come on, now, really? Isn't it just frozen yogurt? What's the big deal? Pinkberry is the little yogurt shop that could--and has--bloomed into a behemoth of local franchises, and with all the hype, they seem set to convert you to be one of their kind. Every trend loves its skeptics, and we count ourselves among the...
LA's Lavender Diamond has headlined shows in London and supported the Decemberists on their U.S. tour last fall. But tonight is their first-ever headlining gig in Los Angeles, with The Finches and Winter Flowers at Safari Sam's. We last caught up with Becky Stark, Lavender Diamond's 25-year-old frontwoman with the delicate voice in June 2005. Last weekend, we were lucky to chase her down near chicken corner for an update. So, what's up with you...
LAist likes to focus on various neighborhoods that make up our great city and some of the features of those neighborhoods that make them stand out. This time around our focus is Studio City. Some of you may be thinking "Studio City? That's the valley, nobody goes to the valley." Well friends, you're wrong. Many people go to the Valley and to Studio City in particular. In fact, Studio City is home to many important places that if they didn't exist, could greatly effect your life and the lives of those closest to you.
The headline on the Jewish Observer-LA website — Sharon Suffers (Mild) Stroke — is both sad and embarassing. True, he did suffer a mild stroke in December 18. But today the 77-year-old leader of the state of Israel had "a significant stroke" followed by "massive bleeding." Doctors say he may not survive. Vice Premier Ehud Olmert has taken on his duties. The future of Sharon's new centrist Kamida party is in doubt, and elections are coming soon, at the end of March. The succession discussion begins.
We love when Las Buxoticas and Los Luchadores come together at the Mayan Theater and entertain the eclectic masses. Having become so popular in its 3 year history, Lucha Va Voom added another show to their usual downtown Halloween massacre and LAist was there drunk off of tequila shots and vodka laced drinks poured with a heavy hand. We arrived just as the lovely ring managers and burlesque dancers drove up in their classic low riders. Outside of those ladies and their grand entrance which let us know they were part of the show, it was difficult to figure out who was in the act and who was merely an excited and obsessive fan dressed for the occasions. After buying our own Lucha masks, we settled in to enjoy the show.
- South LA is just full of socially conscious news right now as a group of parents are banding together to improve conditions at area schools.
Who knew that going out to eat in some of our city's top restaurants could not only ease your hunger, but help fight hunger nationwide? The Dine Out program returns to Los Angeles with its 4th annual Dine Out LA days, coming soon to a fine eating establishment near you. This phenomenal program gives you the opportunity to enjoy a $20 lunch or a $35 dinner prix fixe menu meal, with the benefits going towards the charitable Share Our Strength anti-hunger program. OpenTable is also stepping in to participate, as they are listing their member restaurants and are a tool for making the reservations that are highly recommended for this popular event. Dine Out LA takes place Monday through Friday for two weeks next month (15th-19th and 22nd-29th) and some establishments may not be offering both lunch and dinner deals, so we urge you to check into the individual restaurant of your choice. LAist hopes we can get out and eating for both the extremely good cause of fighting hunger, and for our own "cause" of expanding our dining horizons. Check after the jump for a complete list of participating restaurants.
Woody Harrelson can't be happy. The 6-3 vote by the Supreme Court earlier this week says that our California law protecting the use of medically prescribed Marijuana isn't really protected. Wired points out that the ruling hinges on the fact that the FDA hasn't approved marijuana as a legitimate prescribable drug but that the US government won't release state-grown marijuana to be researched. Thus, the vicious circle. The two women, Angel Raich and Diane Monson, the court ruled against are living with an inoperable brain tumor and degenerative spine disease, respectively.
