Funny Man Dom DeLuise Dies

Another comic great has left us. Dom Deluise, 75, reportedly died last night at a Los Angeles area hospital. "One of the truly funniest comics, EVER!!! "His brand of humor will be greatly missed," an LAist reader wrote in an e-mail this morning. "I'm actually a thin, serious person, but I play fat and funny, but only for the movies," DeLuise once joked about himself. His death follows last week's loss of Vegas performer Danny Gans.

Interview: Stand Up Comic Dan Levy

Dan Levy is quickly becoming a known face around the comedy circuit, due in no small part to his success with the website CollegeHumor, which is an online showcase for funny videos, articles, and photographs, with a heavy bent towards (you guessed it) the college demographic. Dan has been an integral part of the multifaceted expansion of the site beyond the small corner of the web they currently occupy, and into very real comedy territory. This summer alone, Dan moved to New York City to star in a Mountain Dew-backed talk show, called the I Have To Go In A Minute Show, which ran daily on the popular site. Combine that with stand up gigs all across America, often as the comedy anchor to the CollegeHumor live shows, and Dan has been quite busy.

No Joke! Johnny Knoxville Brings a Grenade to LAX

Comedian Johnny Knoxville, legally known as John Philip Clapp, was detained this morning at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as he went through security. "Clapp was processing through passenger security screening when a Transportation Security Administration officer saw the image of a hand-grenade in his carry-on bag," an LAX statement read. "Airport Police and the Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad were called, and it was determined the hand-grenade had no explosives or firing pin." It ended up being a prop from one of his photo shoots that he forgot was in his bag, he said. He was released but could be later charged with a misdemeanor, for possession of a prohibited item within the sterile area of an airport.

The Kings were riding a comfy 3-0 lead late in the second period on Thursday night, and were ready to cruise to a victory, but they didn't account for Anaheim's Bobby Ryan. The rookie who began his season in the minors and was called up in November put on a clinic, scoring a hat trick (three goals) against Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick in the span of 2:21 to set a new franchise record and also tie the game.

This week, as always, there’s lots to see and do in the Los Angeles comedy scene. Be sure to check out some of the great happenings throughout the week. There’s no better way to fight off those post-Halloween and pre-Thanksgiving blues.

One of Hollywood's most offensively funny and wickedly hot (sorry boys, she only likes silver foxes) comedians, Chelsea Handler of E!'s Chelsea Lately will be named "Queen of the Carnival" at West Hollywood's annual Halloween party next week Friday night. And not to leave her little nugget of an assistant out of it, Chuy will be crowned “Little King of the Carnival.”

Comedian ANT, who blogs for NBC on an almost daily basis, is entering the gay marriage debate. The actor and comedian, whose material has included homophobia ("Homophobic means fear of gays. Uhhhh...what are they afraid of? Afraid that we're going to beat them up... and then fuck 'em?") began a blog entry early this morning with what will probably be No on Prop 8's unofficial campaign slogan: "Prop 8 equals hate." Don't be surprised to see more and more buttons and bumper stickers saying just that this election season. T-shirts are already being sold.

Bernie Mac, star of the popular 2001-2006 Fox series "The Bernie Mac Show" and of several top films, has died, according to his publicist Danica Smith. Mac was 50. He died early this morning in the Chicago hospital where he'd been receiving treatment for pneumonia; Mac had a condition known as sarcoidosis, according to KNBC.com, which is "an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs," although the comedian said the illness had been in remission. Mac, who was born and raised in Chicago, began working as a professional comedian in the late 70s, and developed a cult following in the 90s due to his multiple film appearances. Despite being in many well-known films and tv shows and specials, Mac did not give up his sense of self or his ties to Chicago. Mac is survived by his wife of 30 years, Rhonda, their daughter Je'Niece, and his granddaughter Jasmine.

Guest Day Editor Zuma Dogg will be joining LAist with a few posts throughout the day. Read his introductory interview here and check out his site as well as Mayor Sam where he contributes. He also wrote an article in the current edition of the LA Weekly Thanks so much to LAist for having me as Day Editor, sitting in for Tony Pierce! He likes to tear the heads off small animals and he's a practicing philatelist (it sounds dirtier than it is), but there's plenty we don't know about Karl Rove. Or should I say MC Rove? Bush's phone tapping, attorney firing, pro-torturing Chief of Staff had a chance to rock it on the mic at the 2007 Radio-Television Correspondents Dinner,* and rock it he did! Bear with the clip. The rapping doesn't stat until 5:42, but...
