UCLA Head Football Coach Fired

UCLA Head Football Coach Fired

UCLA announced today that they have fired their head football coach, Rick Neuheisel -- or, in PR parlance, Neuheisel has been "relieved of his duties." The firing comes on the heels of UCLA's brutal 50-0 loss to USC over the weekend. more ›

LAst Night's Action: USC Beats Pac-12 South Champion

LAst Night's Action: USC Beats Pac-12 South Champion

USC Trojans defeat UCLA Bruins 50-0. So there you saw the Pac-12 South Champions get their asses handed to them by the team that ends the season in first place in the Pac-12 South. Thanks to the NCAA, that sentence is not only factual but completely logical. Go figure. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 11: What To Say?

College Football Schedule Week 11: What To Say?

It is hard to imagine talking about college football after all of the gruesome revelations that have come out of State College, PA. It’s sick enough when a child fucker was running loose for decades victimizing underprivileged boys in the guise of his charity he established. But when a major university, a venerable football head coach and an entire police department in small town America covered up for this child fucker all in the name of the university, it is outright disgusting. more ›

ESPN's College GameDay, Fandom and a Fruitless Reclamation of Youth

ESPN's College GameDay, Fandom and a Fruitless Reclamation of Youth

The coldest time of the day is the immediate hours before sunrise. At least that is what we are told. I’m usually safely ensconced in the layers of bedding in various states of unconsciousness unless there is a sudden urge to evacuate my bladder. Regardless it’s a rarity that I am outdoors when it’s so cold1, but there I was in the Saturday predawn walking towards the torch-lit Coliseum and into the condensed remains of my breath in the still dark morning. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 9: Senators Need Not Apply

College Football Schedule Week 9: Senators Need Not Apply

Sometimes I have to bow down to the altar of Congress. After all they are the selected elite that dictates the direction this country goes. They make me proud to be an American, and nothing makes me as proud as what has gone down between the Democratic Senator from West Virginia Joe Manchin and the Republican Senator from Kentucky Mitch McConnell. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 7: LSU, Tennessee and Ryan Theriot

College Football Schedule Week 7: LSU, Tennessee and Ryan Theriot

I know I’ve told this story before, but I don’t remember if I’ve written it here before. So if you’ve heard it before, please indulge me because I don’t really want to write about the possibility of Boise State playing in the Big East Conference or dismissed South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia being hinted at being part of a point-shaving scandal or the potential Conference USA-Mountain West Conference football merger. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Not Quick in Shootout

LAst Night's Action: Kings Not Quick in Shootout

New Jersey Devils defeat LA Kings 2-1 (SO). I don’t know what is more shocking: that Kings’ goalie Jonathan Quick lost a game in the shootout or that Devils’ left-winger Ilya Kovalchuk led all players in icetime with 29:37. more ›

LAist-CS Week 6 Rankings: Something's A-Brewing in the ACC

LAist-CS Week 6 Rankings: Something's A-Brewing in the ACC

Everyone has a boner about SEC football, and we live in Pac-12 country. But after several years of abject mediocrity, the ACC is starting to churn out some interesting games. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Prince Averts Disaster for UCLA

LAst Night's Action: Prince Averts Disaster for UCLA

UCLA Bruins defeat Washington State Cougars 28-25. Call it a failure of Washington State’s offense to complete drives. Call it UCLA’s defense playing big when it counted. Call it a complete rebirth of quarterback Kevin Prince. But UCLA gets back to the .500 mark overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12 eking out a victory over the Cougars. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 6: We've Jumped the Shark Folks

College Football Schedule Week 6: We've Jumped the Shark Folks

Just like how Fonzie of Happy Days literally jumped the shark, college conference realignment has done the same. On Thursday the Big 12 Conference officially gave Texas Christian University an invite. Friday morning officials from TCU were mulling over the invite, and by all accounts it looks to be a done deal. more ›

LAist-CS Week 5 Rankings: Clemson Rising

LAist-CS Week 5 Rankings: Clemson Rising

After Clemson beat Auburn at home, I began to take notice. After they beat Florida State at home, I was intrigued but still reluctant to buy in. I’ve done that before and have been burned. So I held off judgment until Saturday when they had to square off against ACC juggernaut Virginia Tech on the road. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 4: The Mediocrity of Pac-12

College Football Schedule Week 4: The Mediocrity of Pac-12

The Pac-12 schedule has now started up, and things don’t look so good for the conference. There is Stanford which, although good, may be a little overrated nationally. Other than that, there’s a whole lot of mediocrity and futility in the Pac. more ›

How Do You Solve a Problem Like UCLA?

It really is a shame. The Rose Bowl is a gorgeous place to catch a football game. Set in amongst the hills in Pasadena, knowing the history of the stadium, it is breathtaking. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 3: Die, NCAA Die!

With Taylor Branch serving the NCAA the largest body blow to date in October’s The Atlantic Monthly, it is clear there is no other option: the NCAA not only has to die, it is inevitable that is will die. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 2: Yawn

College Football Schedule Week 2: Yawn

It’s week two of the college football season, and let’s face it: it’s a bit underwhelming. The two marquee matchups are Alabama at Penn State in the afternoon and Notre Dame at Michigan in prime time (on the East Coast.) more ›

LAst Night's Action: It's All About Preparation

LAst Night's Action: It's All About Preparation

One of the causes of hemorrhoids is increased intra-abdominal pressure - in other words, too much straining. With all the clenched assholes around USC and UCLA during their first games of the season, I certainly hope both programs have a healthy stock of Preparation-H. more ›

LAst Night's Action: It Was a Good Friday in Sports

LAst Night's Action: It Was a Good Friday in Sports

It was a good Friday in sports. Hope that appeared dead suddenly sprang back to life. Let’s start with the local kids the Dodgers. Against a playoff-bound Atlanta Braves team, the Dodgers trail 5-0 by the third inning. It really made me rethink what I wrote on Wednesday about the Dodgers offense. Perhaps they did really well since they played the likes of San Diego, Colorado and a down St. Louis team. Perhaps all of this offense had been an illusion. more ›

LAist-CS Final Regular Season Rankings: The Slap-and-Tickle Battle of L.A.

LAist-CS Final Regular Season Rankings: The Slap-and-Tickle Battle of L.A.

I don’t know what’s more embarrassing: the stabbing in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl or the game itself. Led by Allen Bradford’s 212 yards of rushing and a 47-yard touchdown catch, the Trojans won the Battle of L.A. While that’s all fine and dandy, anyone that watched the third quarter would have wished they were at STAPLES Center watching the Kings beat the Red Wings. Here’s what happened in the third quarter: UCLA Kickoff; USC punt; UCLA interception; USC interception; UCLA fumble; USC turnover on downs; UCLA punt; USC interception; UCLA punt; end of quarter. For the crimes committed against football, both teams should have been assessed losses and the Victory Bell should have been shipped to Division III Occidental Tigers. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 14: Championships!!!!

College Football Schedule Week 14: Championships!!!!

And here we are at the end of the 14-week college playoff system also known as the regular season. If Oregon wins the civil war at Corvalis and Auburn wins the SEC Championship Game against South Carolina at the Georgia Dome, they go to Glendale, AZ for the kit-and-kaboodle. If not, then there are some interesting complications. Sitting right behind Auburn and Oregon are TCU and Stanford ready to move their masses to Arizona for that crystal pigskin if those two falter. more ›

How Is Cam Newton Eligible?

How Is Cam Newton Eligible?

Before I post anything here, I try and make sure I understand everything fully. But I really need your help this time around. I don’t understand how Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is an eligible student-athlete. On Wednesday, a day after Auburn ruled that Newton was ineligible and filed a request for reinstatement to the NCAA, the NCAA ruled that Newton was eligible. more ›

LAist-CS Week 13 Rankings: Broken Broncos

LAist-CS Week 13 Rankings: Broken Broncos

Well Boise State up and ruined it all. My dream matchup of TCU and Boise State in the BCS Championship Game to cause complete chaos in the system has now gone by the wayside thanks to Nevada’s 34-31 win Friday night in overtime in Reno. All Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman had to do was kick the winning 26-yard field goal after Kellen Moore threw a 54-yard laser beam to Titus Young on the first play of the drive with two seconds left. Not only did Brotzman miss that kick, he missed the 29-yarder in overtime that basically gave the game to the Wolfpack. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 13: Gobble Down

College Football Schedule Week 13: Gobble Down

What better way to waste away a long weekend after having gorged on turkey and walking around like zombies in a tryptophan-induced haze than to vegetate on the couch while watching some college football? Having no life, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing until I will be forced to brave the elements Saturday evening to cover the Kings game at STAPLES Center. more ›

LAist-CS Week 12 Rankings: Static

LAist-CS Week 12 Rankings: Static

Boise State is one remarkable football team. Seemingly oblivious to all the talk surrounding them, they just keep their heads down and play on. They had one hiccup against Louisiana Tech where they gave up three touchdowns, but they have shut down all other conference foes. Their latest victim was Fresno State who can be quite the tricky opponent. Ask the USC Trojans about that one - Reggie Bush needed a Heisman-clinching performance to remain undefeated. The last time this team lost was against TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23, 2008. Their last regular season loss at Hawaii on Nov. 23, 2007. Beyond the Smurf Turf and trick plays, they have proven to be one of the most resilient teams in all of college football. more ›

College Football Schedule Week 12: Nostalgic Nonsense

College Football Schedule Week 12: Nostalgic Nonsense

I can easily be derided as a sentimental traditionalist at times - I hate the designated hitter; I hate the yellow first-down marker on television; I hate replay but have grudgingly come to accept it. But sometimes tradition sucks. Old things are dusty and cumbersome and sometimes should be done away. more ›

LAist-CS Week 11 Rankings: Survival Sickness

LAist-CS Week 11 Rankings: Survival Sickness

There was nothing pretty these games on Saturday. TCU trailed early against San Diego State, had their offensive line coach suffer a heart attack in the first quarter, came back for a big lead then almost lost. Oregon held on against Cal thanks to a missed field goal. Auburn trailed Georgia 21-7 in the second quarter before Cam Newton became Cam Newton again and willed his team to victory. more ›
