UCLA's Problem Bigger than Players

UCLA's Problem Bigger than Players

After Sports Illustrated’s piece on UCLA men’s basketball program went live on their website this morning, it’s apparent that the Bruins have a big problem on their hands. The problem is worse than those that author George Dohrmann enumerated in his piece: it’s the problem of irrelevancy. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

Dallas Stars defeat LA Kings 3-2 (OT). After withstanding a Dallas flurry at the start of the second period, the Kings scored twice in just over 30 seconds: Mike Richards extending his career-high five-game goal streak and Kevin Westgarth with his first career goal. The last King to have a five-game scoring streak was Dustin Brown who had a six-game streak from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, 2009. But with 20 seconds from a win, Loui Eriksson scored off of a neutral zone faceoff win to send the game to overtime. Steve Ott gave the Stars the overtime win. more ›

LAst Night's Action: No Blues for the Kings

LAst Night's Action: No Blues for the Kings

Mike Richards with a goal and an assist helps lead the Kings to their fifth victory in seven games. Jonathan Bernier in his first start since Nov. 8 gave up a shaky goal in the first shot of the game. But he recovered to save 23 shots including 14 in the second period. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Sweep Home-and-Home Against Ducks

LAst Night's Action: Kings Sweep Home-and-Home Against Ducks

Perhaps the Ducks’ success in Los Angeles Wednesday night was due to goaltender Jonas Hiller. Against Dan Ellis in the pipes, the Kings got two five-on-five goals, two short-handed goals and a power-play goal en route to their 5-3 win over the Ducks. And for the very first time, the Kings have defeated the Ducks on consecutive nights. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Middle Tennessee Overwhelms Bruins

LAst Night's Action: Middle Tennessee Overwhelms Bruins

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders defeat UCLA Bruins 86-66. Middle Tennessee must really love Southern California. After beating Loyola Marymount on Sunday, they take a stinky dump all over the Bruins in their septic tank of an arena. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Score Four in Second Period, Clings to Victory against Vancouver

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Score Four in Second Period, Clings to Victory against Vancouver

Anaheim Ducks defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-3. The Ducks did Friday night what the Kings couldn’t do Thursday night: beat the Canucks. Despite a four-goal second period with Jonas Hiller shutting out the Canucks to that point, the Ducks barely hung on when Vancouver outshot Anaheim 22-2 in that final period with goals by Kevin Bieksa and two by Jannik Hansen. more ›

NCAA Basketball: The Tears of Madness

NCAA Basketball: The Tears of Madness

After the field of 68 college basketball teams was announced yesterday for the annual Tournament, almost on cue was the annual backlash against the committee’s decisions. They weren’t arguing about the No. 1 seeds mind you - almost universally Ohio St., Pittsburgh, Kansas and Duke were accepted as among the best four teams in the country. All of this hubbub has been saved for Virginia Tech and Colorado. more ›

Pac-12 Announce Conference Alignment, Revenue Sharing

The Pac-10 had a press conference this morning in San Francisco unveiling the conference alignment of the new Pac-12 conference and monetary issues. With USC Athletic Director Pat Haden decrying the possible elimination of rivalry games between the two Los Angeles schools and the two Bay Area schools, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott reassured that rivalries were the focal point for their decision. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Rangers Too Hot for Angels

LAst Night's Action: Rangers Too Hot for Angels

Texas Rangers defeat LA Angels 3-2. Angels’ starter Jered Weaver (L, 9-6) who came into the game with a 1-3 record at Rangers Ballpark at Arlington with a 4.59 ERA gave up a solo homer to Michael Young in the first inning. The Angels came back in the fifth inning when Maicer Izturis hit a double off of Cliff Lee (W, 9-4) that bounced off the end of left fielder Josh Hamilton’s glove to center fielder Julio Borbon that scored Hideki Matsui. The Rangers pulled back ahead in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Hamilton and a sacrifice fly by Bengie Molina. Mike Napoli got the Angels to within a run with a solo shot off of Lee in the seventh, however that would be the closest they would get. Lee ended up pitching into the ninth inning with closer Neftali Feliz getting the final two outs and his 26th save of the season. more ›

USC Football Reported to Face Two Year Bowl Ban and Other Sanctions

USC Football Reported to Face Two Year Bowl Ban and Other Sanctions

The ruling hand of the NCAA has come down and USC has been smote. All reports point to the football program having a two-year bowl ban and a reduction of 20 scholarships thanks to the improper benefits to Reggie Bush’s mom, brother and stepfather who lived in a San Diego area home that was owned by a potential marketer who planned on representing Bush when he turned pro. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Historic Night for Kobe, Forgettable for Lakers

LAst Night's Action: Historic Night for Kobe, Forgettable for Lakers

Memphis Grizzlies defeat LA Lakers 95-93. Kobe Bryant’s 44 point effort made him the Lakers all time leading scorer. All that was for naught as sloppy play and turnovers gave the Grizzlies the win. On their final game of an eight game road trip and coming off of an emotional win in Boston Sunday afternoon, it seemed natural for a letdown to occur. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Celtics Get Revenge on Clips

LAst Night's Action: Celtics Get Revenge on Clips

Boston Celtics defeat LA Clippers 95-89. Glen “Big Baby” Davis told reporters on Monday that he doesn’t like his moniker. Well given that he was fined $25,000 for shouting obscenities at a fan in Detroit last week and getting into a fight that forced him to miss the first 27 games this season, you can’t say that his nickname is well deserved. And his two points, two rebounds and two fouls in 15 minutes against the Clippers doesn’t help any either. The Clippers got balanced scoring from their players with six players scoring double figures led by Rasual Butler’s 17 points. Marcus Camby added 14 boards in their effort to sweep the season series against the Celtics. After leading at halftime by a point, the Clippers fell to the Celtics in the beginning of the third quarter when the Celtics jumped out to an eight point lead. The Clippers hampered by their 38.8% shooting couldn’t come back. The Clips get a day off before they get to discover the Jersey Shore and the 3-40 Nets. more ›

USC Basketball Head Coach Tim Floyd Resigns

As of 1 pm this afternoon, Tim Floyd resigned as USC men's basketball coach according to Floyd's home state's Clarion Ledger. In his one-paragraph resignation later to USC athletic director Mike Garrett he writes, "Unfortunately, I no longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of Southern Cal." Perhaps this wane in enthusiasm stems from him allegedly giving $1,000 to a person close to OJ Mayo during Mayo's recruiting process? More on this later. more ›

Tim Floyd to Stay at USC

Tim Floyd to Stay at USC

Contrary to rumors last night, Tim Floyd will stay on as head coach of the USC Trojans basketball team. Last night word was leaked that Floyd might be headed to the University of Arizona. With an 85-50 record over four seasons, Floyd led the Trojans to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances making it to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007. AP Photo/Jeff Lewis more ›

Video of the Day: NCAA Tournament Barack-etology

President Obama (he's in SoCal today and tomorrow) is a known hoops fan. Taking five minutes out of his busy schedule, he offers his Presidential take on how college basketball's annual horserace may start and finish. Sorry Bruins and Trojans, he's not too kind on the Pac-10. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Cold in Toronto

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Cold in Toronto

LA Lakers defeat Toronto Raptors 115-107. It took three quarters but the Lakers defense finally thawed out and showed up to get the stops against the Raptors. Kobe Bryant scored 36 points far less than the 61 he scored Monday night in Madison Square Garden. Pau Gasol showed his consistency playing center with a 31 point, 15 rebound effort after his 31-14 game Monday night. A little alarming is the fact that Gasol played all but 3:30 of the game while Kobe played for 37:33. With the game tonight against the Boston Celtics, hopefully they don't have a lethargic performance. more ›
